shutdown and restart failure
by Guest wundrtek- 2 replies

Everything works perfect except when I go to start, turn off computer, standby, turn off, or restart none of the standby, turn off, or restart buttons work. I am running XP Pro with service pack 3. I have some security programs running that sometimes don't recognize that a particular program or file is safe to keep. I hope I didn't inadvertantly delete an important registry key? Has anyone seen this before or can anyone help with this problem?

So, norton is gone, completely removed, however, guess what it left, the Firewall, still on. I dont have norton disks, dont want to re-purchase. I figure the only way to get rid of the stupid firewall is to re-install norton & then disable firewall, and uninstall it. I'd rather not have anything to do with norton touching my computer again. how can i disable all firewalls on the pc to re-setup a different firewall. thanx.

Upgrading question. Resetting activation?
by Guest SuperScot- 18 replies

Hi, I'm going to be upgrading my PC soon (This is my first time, but according to many people I've asked it's not too hard.) and I was wondering how I'd go about reinstalling Windows XP Pro? I'm told I should reformat since I'm upgrading the Motherboard/CPU. Anyway, while reading through the XP booklet I came across the part for activation and registration. I was told by people I've asked that I need to phone up Microsoft and "reset" the activation code and that it only takes 5 minutes. Does this mean I can register fine as well? Also, I was wondering if I can phone at any time to do this as I plan on upgrading early morning (3-4am) and want to phone u…

Someone wants to get a new drive that is external and only has a lan connection (1 gig). The computer does have a 1 gig ethernet on the motherboard... however the ROUTER that will be connecting the 2 is only 100MB ... So what would happen is that the connection speed would drop to 100mb of course since that's the router speed. So I thought of getting a new 1 GIG SWITCH and connect everything as you can see in this diagram: http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/2135/graphic1gm3.jpg I suspect that the speed connection between the router and switch would be 100mb and the connection between the PC and HARD DRIVE would be 1 Gig... I would want to have th…

Drive Write Error
by Guest Kent- 1 reply

For about the last week or so my Drive C: will not retain changes made to files on that drive. I noticed this when Windows kept asking me to install the same updates over and over. While exploring this problem, I found that any changes made to Drive C: remain in effect until the next reboot or startup, but are wiped out after the reboot/startup., such as changes to an Excel desktop short cut or a Word file saved to Drive C:. Fortunately, all of my data files are stored on other physical drives (Drive D: and E:), but this is why I didn’t notice the problem right away. If I boot up in Safe Mode all changes can be made and they remain in effect even after a …

HELP!? IE7 in uncontrollable continous loop
by Guest LVLITIG8R- 2 replies
I have XP sp 3, IE 7, Nortan AntiVirus 2006 v. 12.8.0.4 and use AOL 9.0 SE. When I am on AOL, IE7 will frequently open on its own and open new blank pages continuously, in rapid succession, display "ads.web.aol.com" and lock the keyboard. The only thing that works is: ctrl-alt-del, end the AOL and IE7 tasks, then reboot. However, it then routinely starts all over again. Any suggestions of what I can do to stop this ???

Winlogon.exe always reverts back the Userinit registry key
by Guest yankohurta@gmail.com- 0 replies

We're trying to implement a custom userinit procedure in our network. The user MUST register his/her time-entry within a custom application (that we developed) just after the network authentication and before the logon procedure continue. Here's the sequence we're trying to achieve: 1. User authenticates in our domain providing his/her username and password; 2. Gina calls Winlogon which in turn calls MYUSERINIT.EXE; 3. MYUSERINIT prompts for a time-entry; 4. User agrees clicking in a button; 5. MYUSERINIT calls the DEFAULT USERINIT.EXE and ends; 6. Logon continues. The issue is that, everytime we manually change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Micros…

SET /P in batch file - Default value after timeout for user prompt
by Guest ergo_largo- 2 replies

Hello! This used to be easy with the CHOICE command in Win9x batch files, but I think I must be missing something, as I can't find out how to do this using SET /P, the replacement in WIN XP. Does anybody know if and how to get a batch file to wait a limited time for user input, and to use a default value instead if the time expires without user input? I thought it might be possible to do something equivalent to SET /P:30,Y choice=Enter your choice I know this is just made up, its just an example of what I was trying to do, but does anybody know how I would go about doing this sort of thing? I can't find any relevant documentation anywhere .... th…

Disable extension change warning?
by Guest Robert Morley- 12 replies

Is it possible to disable the warning when you manually change the file extension in Explorer on XP SP3? I do this on a regular basis (changing MPG to AVI due to certain limitations in PowerDVD with closed captions), and it's rather annoying to have to confirm it every time. I've googled the issue, and a few places said it couldn't be done, but I couldn't find anything on any sites that I consider reputable. Thanks, Rob
