Univerisal Serial Bus (USB) Controller Driver
by Guest Neil- 4 replies
Hello, I have just reinstalled Windows XP on my computer, however I cannot get any of my USB peripheral to work. I checked the device manager and it says that I don't have the Univerisal Serial Bus (USB) Controller Driver, I have been looking around and I have been unable to find a driver. I am using USB 1 still. Can anyone point me in the right direction of the relevant driver? As this is really annoying because I have a lot of my files on external USB Harddisks and at the moment I can't access any of them. Thank you Neil.

by Guest computerchallengedcc- 7 replies

When shutting down, pc starts to shut down normally, goes to black screen, and then starts over with ssaving settings, shutting down, etc. and is taking much longer than normal to shut down even at this point. I only see two errors in the Events Log, and the time frame is not corresponding to the time that I shut down my pc. Red warning in Event Log says: "Service Control Manager".... The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: SASKUTIL For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. The above link does not work! The yellow warning has to do with Windows Defender: Windows De…

Another SP3 install error
by Guest operaflute- 6 replies
Auto-update downloaded SP3. Before I agreed to install, I (wisely) backed up. After the install, I get the error msg: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <windowsroot>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe" After restoring said file from my backup, I still can't boot. I just get a black screen. Admittedly, I forgot to try safe mode before just restoring my entire drive from the backup. (Why not? That's why I did the back up in the first place.) MS says the file is not corrupt (which would explain why restoring it didn't solve the problem) They also say that the file is unchanged in SP3 (which tells me that redownloa…

Windows freezing in an odd manner
by Guest Nick B- 6 replies

We have an XP SP3 computer that freezes after a while of sitting there. For instance, in the morning, often we will sit at the computer and we are able to move the mouse around and single click on different icons in the Dekstop. But if we double-click on something (like and Internet Explorer shortcut, or even a folder), the Desktop seems to freeze -- we can still move the mouse around, but nothing else can be higlighted and we can no longer create "boxes" by clicking and dragging. Interestingly we can often then hover the mouse over the arrow that expands the system tray and it will say "Show hidden icons", but if we click on that, that task bar will fe…

Does anyone know what this message means and if so is there anything that can be done to correct it. Almost each time I close Outlook 2003 in Windows XP SP3 I get an error message Unexpected Memory Leak. " An unexpected memory leak has occured. The unexpected small block leaks are: 13-20 bytes: TObjectList x 2, Unknown x2" Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your support. HankL

Print Screen

Now that I found the Clipboard viewer, I was trying to capture the desktop with the "Print Screen"button, but it does not work. When I open the viewer, all I see is blackness. When I paste it to Paint, same thing, blackness. Is this a problem with the keyboard, or the applet? How do I find out? Do I need to update something? Any suggestions would be great. Thank you. Sirius.

On a number of websites, I note that WinXP has apparently memorized items like my name, email address, phone number, and logins. But it's also memorized some earlier misspellings. Is there, and if so where is a file which contains these items? Is it editable? -- PT

Product keys & CD's
by Guest Sirius- 5 replies
Hello, I have a weird question, hope you don't mind. I have some windows xp cd's without product keys, genuine of course, and then I have some product keys without the win xp software cd's from computers that have dead harddrives and did not have a cd come with them because the recovery was on the harddrive itself on a hidden partition, can't get the software due to warranty expiration. home with home, oem with oem, pro with pro, etc. Sooo, I would like to know if it's possible to put the disks and keys together, should I even try or is it a waste of time. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

WindowsXP 64-bit new install: any tricks?
by Guest Ken- 3 replies

I am building a system for my daughter, who is a design student and "needs" a system to run her CAD programs. I am told that her instructors urge that the system run WindowsXP 64-bit. I have done a number of installs of the 32-bit version; are there any tricks to installing the 64-bit version (other than checking to be sure that drivers are available for devices)? are there any websites that may be helpful? Thanks Ken Krone

Repair Install
by Guest JohnD- 6 replies

I have a Compaq Evo notebook that I "inherited." Couple weeks ago on boot up I got a message that Windows had recovered from a catastrophic failure and did I want to advise Microsoft? So I did and got a Microsoft Online Crash Analysis that advised me to run Windows Memory Diagnostic. So I did that and it ran all night and came up with nothing. The computer boots into XP Pro and runs, but I know it is not healthy because I no longer have the desktop of shortcut icons that I used to have - just a half dozen or so basic ones. Also. I am unable to restore to a date before the crash. In fact I can't even restore to yesterday. So, I'm thinking Repair …
