multiple I386 folders. Abnormal?
by Guest rsl18@sbcglobal.net- 4 replies

The reply to a previous post did not fully answer my need for information. I am now guessing that it is normal for there to be multiple folders named SYSTEM32. "File Locator Pro" search reveals: C:\Documents and Settings\Lynn&Kathy\Desktop\seldom USED\EN-World\System32 2/28/2008: C:\Documents and Settings\Lynn&Kathy\My Documents\Cecil\Discharge 31 Dec 1959\I386\SYSTEM32 5/2/2008 C:\OP16Std\Prerequisite\System32 2/28/2008 C:\Program Files\pebuilder3110a\BartPE\I386\SYSTEM32 5/19/2008 C:\WINDOWS\system32 9/29/2008 Also, there are folders named "I386" in several locations. My concern is that there is no I386 at C:\Windows. I repeat that the…

Vista Registry Cleaner - As Every PC Deserves the Best! 1 2 3
by Guest voujnbwuotkd@yahoo.com- 71 replies

One of the most common operating system that is used now a days is the Microsoft Windows Vista. It is the interface, which is the most enthralling part as it consists of a vivacious see-through window that has a pat of fine colour along with a brand new Start menu. However, what is important is to keep the system working efficiently and effectively. Windows Vista Registry Cleaner is one such service provider that is needed to maintain the operating system in good working conditions. A registry is nothing but a list of all the information about the details of software, hardware and preferences of the user along with all the settings details. Every time a new soft…

I get an MMC error when I run Diskeeper Lite

"MMC has detected an error in a snap in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC." I didn't used to get this before. It probably has to do with the SP3 upgrade. Does anyone know how to get rid of this error message?

PROBLEMS with virus riddled laptop FOLLOW-UP
by Guest Richard- 3 replies
Well..... :-) 108 viruses and trojans removed from C: drive 3 more removed from external USB drive 4 more removed from USB memory stick 4 more (again) removed from another USB memory stick Tools->Folder Options... menu and task manager restored to working order. The laptop even connects to the internet now! Several incomplete pieces of software dis-installed, including the remnants of no less than 3 other antivirus/firewall programs! The only outstanding issue was the failure of double-clicking on Local Disk drives in My Computer to work. Tried two solutions to this problem (regsvr /i shell32, and http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm), …

I've noticed recently that Windows seems to arbitrarily decide which files/folders get their names truncated and an ellipsis added when viewing them in icon/tile mode. This also affects my desktop, and it's really annoying. Windows has chosen to abbreviate "TmSunrise" to "TmSunri..." when the shortcut right beside it says "Play Rogue Squadron". In short, does anyone know the rule Windows uses to assign abbreviations and ellipses within folders, and if so, if it is changeable?

Losing control of the cursor
by Guest John Pollard- 3 replies

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop. Recently had a Symantec tech-support person "fix" a NAV problem on the laptop using one of those remote login pieces of software. The original problem seems to be fixed, but now I can not keep control of the cursor. At random times, the cursor becomes disengaged from the touchpad (or usb mouse), and drifts off the screen. Nothing done with the touchpad or mouse will get control of the cursor. Sometimes the cursor can be moved partway back in view on the screen, but it then quickly moves off the screen again. Left clicking usually displays the Start menu, left clicking again closes the Start menu. Right clickin…

Since about 2 weeks, once IE7 (under XP) is started, about one minute later there is an automatic opening of a new window asking for download of VirusRemover2008, because XP infection and so on. The window is hard to close as there are several pop-ups insisting for download. Once closed there is another new window opening for PersonalAntiSpy, once closed, followed by a third one for Antispyware. I really don't know how to get rid of this and I ask for help Thanks Fernand PS: did a post in the right forum?

XP Sleep Mode (Shut Down)
by Guest Kevin W.- 3 replies

I have a Gateway GT5252 that is running Windows XP. Weeks ago it went into sleep mode and never came out. The monitor says "No Signal", the wireless keyboard and mouse do not work, and the CD drive will not open. Is there anything I can do to get this darn thing working? I don't need anything off the hard drive, so if I could only do some "major" re-start to sense everything I'll start all over. The system is only a year and a half old, so I can not imagine it's junk already? Thanks Everyone

msconfig vs. Autoruns 1 2
by Guest Jo-Anne- 27 replies

Several people kindly informed me that the stuttering sound at Windows opening on my WinXP SP3 notebook computer was probably caused by too many programs running at Startup. In the back-and-forthing about that issue, I was told that I could stop some programs from running when the computer starts. Some said they could be deleted from Autoruns and some talked about unchecking them in msconfig. Questions: If all I want to do is keep them from running, am I best off just unchecking them in msconfig? Is there a point where they should be deleted from Autoruns? In both cases, I'm guessing that the programs still exist on the computer; they just don't run auto…

RoboCopy XP026 Return Code
by Guest Alain- 0 replies
With RoboCopy version XP026 the Return Code is always 0 (even with a fatal error) instead of what it should be according to the documentation. Is anyone know a workaround to this problem or if there is an update that fix it? I was also wondering why the version XP026 is 3 times bigger than XP010 for the only few extra features, was there major flaws to address in version XP010? Is there any features and flaws comparaison table of the different versions? Thanks!

When I insert a flash drive into a USB port, I get a dialog box with various options for what to do. Recently, the option to open Windows Explorer has vanished from this list, and that's what I usually want to do. Does anyone know how to get this back? TIA -- Peter

Installing XP-It Reads the CD but ...
by Guest wtw- 4 replies

This is odd. I'm trying to install XP Pro on a new drive. It was going along fine, but asked me to insert a CD. It gives me a choice of Win OS products. Why do I need to do this? It's already there. I just took it out, put it back in and got the same results? Is it looking for some prior install CD to verify I purchased an earlier OS?
