BIG FTP Problem
by Guest Olen R. Pearson- 3 replies

Hi, I am having a very odd problem with FTP. Basically, it won't work. The FTP client seems to connect but then issues an error and no files appear on the remote server. The last time I needed to use FTP was in February of this year, and it worked fine. Now, when I try it, it goes nowhere. I have tried several different FTP clients and accounts, all with the same outcome. It is not a firewall problem; I run only Win XP Pro firewall and have tried it with that disabled + anything else that even MIGHT effect connections. I have tried it in Safe Mode with no success which makes me think it is not a conflict with another app - though I don't believe I have …

What program or DLL is used to compress files in XP? I know compact is for the file system, but what is used when you want to make a zip and do not have a 3rd part add-on such as winzip. I have been searching, but have not found an answer.

AOL installation problems
by Guest Mr.Joecat- 9 replies

I had a very old computer running windows Me (yes, you heard right) and never had a single problem with it in 9 years, including with AOL. I loaded XP on it and everything works fine, except I can't install AOL now (which worked fine before). One of two things usually happens: After I upload AOL from an installation disk, I get a message saying "AOL will now install files you need to run AOL. You will need to restart to use AOL". I click yes, reboot, and instead of AOL loading I get the same message over and over again in an endless loop, like it keeps trying to finish installing but won't. The second is, on a few occasions I actually got he AOL sc…

I have a virus. My desktop is white with "Active Desktop Recovery" which when I hit "Restore my Active Desktop" I get the message "an error occured in the script". Plus my start menu is gone. When I hit start, the right side is blank plus "programs" is gone. I ran Ad-Aware and AVG and this cleaned up a lot of the pop ups but with my desktop icons gone and unable to go through "programs", I am unable to access needed programs. Any help in getting me back to normal will be appreciated. I can see them on my Start menu anymore. PLus there is this Desktop pic of "Buy Privacy Protection Service now" with the Url Link with it. Ghost image backup won't boot.
by Guest Matty Anderson- 4 replies

I restored my boot partition from a Ghost image, and when booting, the computer gets past the first XP screen, then hangs at the welcome screen. I see the mouse and the welcome screen, but no login choices. This is the first time I've tried this, and the restoration itself seemed to go smoothly. I was sure to check the box to set the partition active. BTW, this is a Gateway laptop w/ Turion, 1Gb ram, 120gb HD with XP Media Center. I'm trying to avoid doing a full reinstall. That's why I made the ghost image. In case I need to, though, I no longer have the disks that came with the computer, but the XP sticker is still on the bottom. Will that seri…

Networking XP to a 64-bit printer setup
by Guest Otto Moehrbach- 2 replies

I had a simple 2 computer network at home, both with Windows XP, 32-bit. They were networked through the router and the printer was shared. The printer is a Canon MP530 that does not have an Ethernet jack, just a USB hookup. All worked well, with both computers being able to access the one printer. Now I replaced the main computer with a 64-bit Vista machine. I downloaded a 64-bit driver file for the printer and all is working with the printer and the main computer. The 2 computers are still networked and both have internet access as before. However, the second (XP) computer has no access to the printer. How can I get the printer to work with the se…

Roxio 10 and Audio Capture
by Guest Greg- 1 reply

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 notebook with Vista Home Premium on it. Currenty I am running Roxio Ver.9. The audio capture only detects the on board mic (has a mic/cam combo on the lid). XP is different. I had it loaded on the notebook at one time and it would capture different audio instead of just the mic. Does anyone know if Roxio Ver.10 has fixed this? Or is this unique to Vista? Thanks, Greg

Howdy, I'm running XP SP3 on a Dell Latitude D610. If I open the "Help & Support Center" and click "User's Guide" nothing happens. I do have the HTML User's Guide on the system, but obviously, not in the proper location. Where should I put it to allow it to be seen by the "Help & Support Center" link? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Hi All Not sure if my first post got through, so I am sending again I have been assisting a friend to sort his laptop out and we have a problem with a Windows update. Every time we try to install the update it fails and comes back in the Windows update icon, ready to install, but also told us we have the wrong version of IE. The Laptop is running Windows XP with SP3 and IE 7 The nuisance update is :- Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB953838) I have had a quick look on the MS website, and find this patch dates back to June 2008. There is a tick box to say ignore this update, but even though I have ticked this, …

My eyes are getting weaker and I'm finding many items especially via IE-7 are difficult to read. The font is small and designers all too often choose settings that make for very low contrast. You'd think BOLD is a disease. Is there anything I can do in Windows? Or even in IE ??? Thanks, Ted

Extra 'My Documents' Folder
by Guest David- 4 replies

Recovering from a complete reinstall, I somehow wound up with a complete second set of "My Documents" The properties of this My Documents" folder say it is a shortcut to the target folder (which is OK) I would like to get rid of this extra My Documents folder. I have tried the register edit from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_favorites.htm, except it doesn't really tell me what to do after I get to the correct entry. Also, I don't really see where TweakUI addresses this problem either. Would welcome any suggestions. Dave
