Types of ports in routers
by Guest Big Sky- 1 reply

I've been interested in getting a switch for my network as I am running out of ports on my wireless router. I even have a Belkin wired router downstream that has the DHCP turned off so it can work as a hub (switch?). I've read about the inherent advantages of a switch versus a hub. But I was wondering, does a wireless router (lower level DLink G) have a built in hub or a switch? I can't find it in my documentation. It just says it has 4 10/100 ports. If its a hub, perhaps it would be better to run all my computers into a switch with a single connection to the router. Then my computers would get better speed for gaming, accessing shared files, etc. Of course…

Advanced Server and WINXP PCs

I have a Shuttle P4 2.2 GHz PC (1GB ram, 200GB HD) that I thought I'd turn into a server for my home network consisting of all WinXP PCs. I intend to use this PC to (a) store photos, videos, and important files for shared use and (b) install a Hauppauge card with Snapstream software to share TV around the house. I don't intend to use it as a backup device because my 100MB/s wired LAN would be slow as would the computer sitting on an 802.11G connection. I'll use internal HDs or external USB HDs for backup. Nor do I intend to use it as an FTP server. It will only be accessed by PCs on my LAN. Does Advanced Server play well with WinXP PCs? I've had …

System Crashes with 2G Memory

Am looking for information that can lead to fix for W2KAS when installing 2G RAM. Motherboard: Asus A7M266-D Processor(s) (2): AMD Athalon XP 1800+ DIMM: KVR266X64C25/512 I have been running two KVR266X64C25/512 for about three years on this server, but when I install two of the same chip W2KAS crashes with a different STOP message each time, and never in the same stage of bootup. Sometimes it will make it into the OS and allow me to run an application, but the moment the application loads the OS crashes to a reboot. I tried inserting the /PAE switch in boot.ini, but this has not corrected the problem. However, when I remove the two new DIMM's W2KAS b…

Updates KB94385 and KB941644

We installed these two updates in addition to .NET 2.0 SP1 on Sunday 2/3/08. These were installed on two seperate, but identical Win2k SP4 servers on two different subnets. On Monday 2/4 a user called complaining of an issue with an Excel file they were editing on a server share. It basically stated that the file was was in use, etc. but they had the option to save the file to a different name. An inspection of the problem file revealed that the only property that was accessable was the general tab. The Security and Summary tabs were not displayed, consequently even admin could not move or delete the file. This occured each day with other files. A c…
