Disk quota problems w/ user folders (home folders) / owned by Admi
by Guest Jason Lehman WC- 0 replies
Users folders (home folders) are owned by Administrator account, this is throwing off disk quota. This is because all the user folders where created by the Administrator account, & new users will get created by the Administrator account. There is a manual process, by using a Win2k3 server; to give ownership to the users folders, but we have way too many users to do this manually. What can I do to automate this? So that current user folders & new user folders that get created are owned by the right user, not the Administrator account. Any suggestion is much appreciated. Whether it be a script or something in AD. Thanks. Jason

DFS File Issues
by Guest Ed May- 0 replies

We have Windows 2000 and use DFS to use sharing on our files. All of the XLS files from Excel will not open in Windows Explorer, they give an error of "\\servername\" cannot be found. I double checked the DFS management on the server and it seems to be fine there. If I open the file from within the Excel File menu, it works fine. Any ideas? joe.ryan@directive.com

Very strange error, I will appreciate your help When I'm trying to connect to a remote share from a Xp client to a W2000 server by IP, It doesn't work, It continously prompt user validation. When I try by hostname It's work, very strange! Both Machines are in the same domain, across a Wan link , Xp client at one side with the DC and the Windows Server at the other side. There isn´t a firewall filtering the link At the server an event 5719 "No windows NT or DomainController available... The remote procedure call failed and did not execute" appeared every 2 hours. It seems a "ntlm" problem, I activated the netlogon.log why the NlSessionSetup: Sessio…

Failed Domain controller
by Guest David- 0 replies

Hi all, I walked in on a new job, they had two DCs Win 2K and one has been dead for weeks, no backups…. One DC is operational. I bought a new server Win 2003 R2 server and all hot fixes are installed. Can not join the domain because the failed DC name is the same is the new box….I thought I should force removing the old DC name from AD and seize any FSMO role to the existing DC which is win 2k advanced server. I plan to run adprep / forestprep and domainprep and run dcpromo on the new box. I would like to know if you think my plan will work before I start this process, and learn how to remove a filed DC from active directory… Thanks

Effective NTFS Permissions on Windows
by Guest Prahalad Deshpande- 0 replies

I am currently investigating how Effective Permissions calculations work on Windows. I am considering all the server versions of Windows however I restrict my discussion to Windows 2003 Server here as it has a tool to calculate the Effective Permissions. My domain scenario is as follows: Number of domains : 1 running on Win2k SP4 AS I create a new user in the domain say UserX and a new global group say GroupY and make UserX a member of GroupY. To experiment with I first assigned Everyone group full control on a particular directory and Authenticated Users only write control on the directory. Now according to Microsoft Everyone group includes Authentica…

Clustered Drive corruption
by Guest Jake- 1 reply

I have approx 50 Win2k AS 2-node File and Print clusters connected to IBM FastT200 Fibre Arrays, configured with a Q: quorum drive, D: data drive and 2 spooler drives for Windows and Unix printing. The D data drives continually get MFT corruption, eventually causing drive failure, however there is no corruption on any other drive. The d: Data drive contains user profiles, homedirs, shareddata and shared folders for application data and DHCP and WINS db's. Although a the majority of I/O is on this drive it is well within the limits of the hardware. After running a chkdsk d: /f on the drive a read only chkdsk shows no corruption. However a day later the…
