Did I hear correctly that Windows 98 cannot handle memory more than 512 MB? If I'm wrong, what IS the maximum memory for Windows 98? And what happens when that "too much" limit has been exceeded?

by Guest skibuz- 37 replies

I have brought my old Win 98 SE back to life for my grandsons (ages 5 & 6) to play their internet games (specifically http://www.totaldramaisland.com). I worked with MEB on the Win 98 Networking forum and he was very helpful. I have now performed my Windows Updates, installed IE6, Avast Antivirus, Kerio Personal Firewall. Installed Flash 9 (which shows up in Add/Remove programs as Adobe Flash Player ActiveX). Additionally, he suggested I install SUN JAVA. At the http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp I found Jave SE Downloads-Previous Release_J2SE 5.0 I can find J2SE API V 1.5.0 Beta1, J2SE API V 1.5.0 Beta 2, and J2SE API V 1.5.0RC, but …

How do I correct spelling in Company Name?
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 13 replies
- 1.3k views
Dyslexia strikes again! Soemwhere during installation of MS Office 2000 on my Win98SE, I misspelled my company name by inverting two letters. Went unoticed for eons. Now, after noticing this error and upon creating a file, I have to manually go to the new .xls, .doc, and ?? file, click on 'Properties' and correct the spelling. Sometimes forget. I don't want to reinstall anything, because everything is set up just the way I want it [except for spelling]. Is there some simple way to change the spelling that appears under 'company name'? Cannot sign in to messenger or load hotmail sign-in webpage login.live.com Getting Network timeout for hotmail and Msn instant messenger will not work. Tried trillian. It kind of worked, but kept knocking me off every few seconds. What is odd, it works for people that have direct connection but not dial-up. My mothers work can access hotmail. They have wireless access. The two dial up ISP, I tried timed out. I checked my host file, there is nothing that would block it. I tried different browsers and neither worked. Greg

Threats to your Internet usage - what, why, and how
by Guest MEB- 4 replies
Many users of the Internet believe that because of the billions of users, they are protected from malicious attacks. These people apparently fail to understand the WHAT, HOW, WHY some of these attack activities occur. Others believe that the protections offered by the OSs somehow keeps these malicious activities from occurring. Hackers LOVE these people, they are the "meat and potatoes" of the hacker world. I've posted things like "clickjacking", linked sites, SSI {server-side includes}, embedded code, and other methods in this group, however, there still seems to be a lack of comprehension of certain points. Here's a link to one site which deals with so…

Is there a hard drive file organizer that will ... 1 2
by Guest 98 Guy- 37 replies
- 4.1k views
Is there a hard drive file organizer, optimizer, "cleaner", that will a) identify multiple copies of the same file based on - same file name (but perhaps binary identical, perhaps not) - different name, but binary identical and either follow your rules (eg smart rename) or allow you to easily move them around or delete the duplicates b) identify, catalog or list the version numbers of multiple copies of the same system files (.exe, dll, etc) The goal is to use such software (instead of manual exploration and file cutting and pasting) to organize and aggregate the contents of possibly up to a few dozen hard drives. Most hard drive file o…

WMF patch - gdihook.dll infected by trojan?
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 21 replies
I've been using Paolo Monti's "GDI32 / WMF Patch" for nearly a year now but it was only recently that AVG told me that the gdihook.dll component file was infected with the BackDoor.Hupigon4.ADUA trojan. A scan at Virustotal resulted in 18 out 36 antivirus software detecting the same malware. Symantec and TrendMicro were two that didn't detect it. I'm wondering whether this is a false positive. Here are the results: http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/gdihook_dll_scan.htm The package is delivered as a single install.exe file. When this file is scanned by Virustotal, Sophos identifies "Sus/Madcode-A" malware. All other antivirus products detect nothing. I…

Accessibility Wizard
by Guest AnneLee- 2 replies

I wanted to make the text on my Inspiron 1520 Windows XP (I running Windows 6.0) just a little bit larger, so I used the Accessibility Wizard. Instead of increase my font size a bit much, it is 10 times larger. I tried a number of times to re-do the Wizard but it would go back to my original settings. I cannot even see 1/3 of an article on my screen. It deleted my background (which I can reload) but I don't know why it disappeared. When I turn my computer on, click on IE, everything looks normal until instead of the page with my background and the icons I use, I have a complete white page with the icons I use. The icons are of normal size but when I cl…

Hi.. I've had Windows 98se for many years and I'm looking to get a newer PC. I see that MOST of the systems today come with Windows Vista. I do see an occasional PC with XP but it is usually one that is on "clearance". If I do get a newer PC, which operating system would you reccomend? I have heard quite a few people say that they didn't care much for Vista and I was wondering why that is the case? Thank You Annie

Does the RPC Attack affect Win 98?
by Guest smith- 4 replies

Does the RPC attack affect Win 98? M$ Security Bulletin: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx The Bulletin states: Customers who require custom support for older releases must contact their Microsoft account team representative, their Technical Account Manager, or the appropriate Microsoft partner representative for custom support options Does this mean M$ is still supporting 98 for people with custom contracts? The bulletin also states in the FAQs" What systems are primarily at risk from the vulnerability? While all workstations and servers are at risk regarding this issue, systems running Microsoft Windows…

GPS / Win CE installation problem
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 6 replies

I recently purchased this GPS device: http://www.power-gps.com/en/chanpin/PWM-3501.html Here is the instruction manual: http://www.tempoaustralia.com.au/images/stories/instructionmanuals/pwm-3501tevionInstructionmanual.pdf (1.1 MB) No driver is supplied for this device. Instead it is supposedly supported natively by Windows. It suggests that the GPS Navigator and its SD card appear like two standard "USB Mass storage Devices". Unfortunately Windows ignores the Maximus Decim NUSB driver set when searching for a suitable driver. Here is how UVCview sees the device (without an SD card): http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/PWM-3501.txt idVendor: …

How come IPConfig /flushdns doesn't work??....
by Guest Penang- 7 replies

Hi, all ! I've tested IPConfig /flushdns command and found out that it doesn't work. But before I go on, here are some background details... My connection to the net is via ADSL, dynamic link. In theory, the use of the following 3 commands:- ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew supposed to flush out the "old" dns, and obtain a "new" one. So I made a batch file (ip.bat) with the following command:- ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /all and run 2 tests, about 20 minutes apart. The result is, the dns and the IPs staye…

What MS jpeg viewers are there for win-98?
by Guest 98 Guy- 17 replies
- 1.3k views
Outlook 2000 (running on Win-98) opens jpegs attached to e-mails with MS Paint (at least it does for me). This is also the default viewer when jpegs are opened from explorer. MS Paint does not have the capability to reduce the view to less than 100% or otherwise to "fit to window". What other bitmap viewing programs came with Win-9x or Office 2K Premium that I can easily set as the default viewer that allows more flexible scaling? Bonus question: Can Outlook be configured to display bitmaps (like jpeg's) in-line? I think Outlook Express does this - can Outlook do it too?
