Thank you everyone! I really appreciate you sticking with me through this. Someone sent me the 3 DLL files I was missing. I installed them and was able to run the repair tool for IE6SP1. But that didn't help. I cleaned up my startup items with help from the group. I deleted a lot of unnecessary files. I download IE6sp1 zip from an e-mail and Gary walked my through the overinstall. I follow your advice on just about every post. Forgive me for not answering all but we spent about 24 hours just going through this. This is my third day and we are finally fixed. I think what did it is I removed my firewall.....'Trial of Transgressions'....I think that was the name. and …

Over the last three days, I've tried to access two separate youtube links on two separate occasions to find the W98 system freezes as the page is initially displayed. No keybd/mouse response. Required a hardware reboot to recover. I don't normally access youtube, but had done so in the previous week without problems. First link was: The first time the problem occurred, I did a quick disk check - lost clusters found (and repaired). I retried the same link with number crunching background activity disabled - with the same result. Repeated disk check and then attempted to run defrag - incomplete after hitting a bad sector. This was repaired by running …

The windows fatal exception is as follows: Fatal exception 0D occurred at 0147:0000BC9D I have a dual-boot with XP Professional which still works great. However, I also want 98SE to work great as well. Thanks for your help and I look forward to getting 98SE up and running at full speed. Well PCR, you were right that eventually XP Pro. would hurt 98SE I guess -- grin. Thanks in advance for all of the help and I am looking forward to posting here again via M…

destorying the hard drive 1 2 3 4

My daughter has an old Gateway computer running Windows 98. She says no one wants it because it is slow and obsolete and she wants to turn it into the local recycling place. She is worried about (personal) data on the hard drive. I wonder if reformatting the HD will destroy all the data? My old W95 computer, I took the HD out and smashed it with a sledge hammer, but she doesn't want to do that. She took it to a computer store, and they offered to "hose" the HD and dispose of the computer for $50.00. Any suggestions? Jim

by Guest Warren- 90 replies

I had trouble getting the right drivers installed for my Viewsonic LCD. Essentially I ended up booting up the machine with no drivers and Windows installed a Default Monitor. After finally getting the correct drivers installed on my computer the correct drivers where installed but the computer still thinks there's an unknown monitor attached to the machine and keeps recreating the Default Monitor at start-up. How do I fix this false detection of an unknown monitor ?

My samsung sh-182f DVD writer has become horribly slow, records at 1X max, even with 16X disks. I cannot turn DMA on in the hardware manager. Even my floppy drive has DMA ........ Must be a way. 6 hours hacking and nothing so far. TIA Apparently there is a registry/system entry that does not allow DMA on a drive, but cannot find it. Neither on PC or on Google. The drive had DMA a month ago, last time I checked.

Duplicated Posts Showing in OE 1 2 3 4
by Guest PCR- 81 replies

Why am I seeing over 300 duplicated posts in this NG!? It seems the first post in many threads are showing the initial post TWICE. In some case, entire thread segments are duplicated. My inclination is to reset the NG. But I must go now-- no time to even investigate! The posts are identical, but their Properties are different. Here is an example. Can the posts be coming into this NG (I am connected directly to the MS Server) from two different sources? Why do the dates seem to indicate different time zones? Cloning Win98FE prior to SE upgrade 1 2 3 4
by Guest Teflon- 76 replies

While I would like the USB and other upgraded support options of SE, I have been putting off upgrading to SE on an older laptop, because, 1.) the FE config is running great & 2.) if anything goes wrong with the upgrade, I don't look forward to reinstalling FE with all the fixes. I don't have an external HDD or a CD burner on the system, so I came up with this plan to clone the C: drive: Remove the HDD from the laptop and install it in a USB external enclosure. Connect the enclosure to my XP system. Run Ghost to clone the C: drive to an external HDD attached to the XP system. Reinstall HDD in laptop. Clean install of SE. I would appreciate kn…

Bootup - Shutdown logger 1 2 3 4
by Guest PSRumbagh- 75 replies

I would like to produce a (text) file that shows when (date & time) bootup is completed and when shutdown is initiated. The file needs to append itself everytime bootup and shutdown occurs, i.e the file grows bigger with time. For example, over a year period the file will probably have many hundreds of entries in it. The program must NOT delete previous entries. Any suggestions?

open letter to W98 users 1 2 3

It's beginning increasingly apparent that I will not be about to keep up with the "deluge" of 98 trials and tribulations for much longer. I first cut "my teeth" here, and the great part of so many of you originals are still around--(Don't nobody croak anymore" ;- I do know Alex will be missed, although I never get to speak in person. As many of you know, (and much to CPR's chagrin) I have also moved to three XP groups, but always have my times here. I'll continue to answer questions as best as possible but with out the wit, and the "quick-draw". (I *never* was either!) I'm not looking for anybody's sympathy, but I thought those involved should n…

Icon Confusion 1 2 3
by Guest HN@invalid.com- 71 replies
- 2.7k views
This is Win98se For some reason there is some icon confusion going on. For example, I have a program called "Hosts Toggle" (to turn on and off the hosts file). Right now, all files with the PDF extension have the icon from "Hosts Toggle". Text files (.txt) have an icon from another program instead of the notepad icon. The next time I reboot, the icons will be different and some other extension will have the wrong icon, for example last night all the ..jpg files had an icon from another folder on my desktop. Everything else is working fine. Why is this happeningt and how do I fix it? Thanks HN

Floppy Disk Question Follow Up 1 2 3
by Guest DaffyD®- 70 replies

This is a follow up to 2 previous posts in this newsgroup. Ok, I confirmed that the FDD ribbon cable red stripe was aligned with pin 1 on the motherboard. I then confirmed it was also aligned correctly at the FDD. Still got the constant green LED while the FDD spun around like a CD drive. I then tried flipping over the ribbon cable at the FDD--still the same result. At that point, I just gave up and pulled out the power connector from the FDD. I'm of the opinion that this is not just a case of the ribbon cable being connected incorrectly, but that there's something else going on. Again, this drive operated fine before I installed a power supply. I've searc…

Oh well couple of days late responding. Just curious Bill,I was about to undertake a EE, and got married instead. Obviously long-range plans aren't my forte. Just kidding, I have the utmost respect and admiration for women. What was your main area of discipline? I used to be quite a ham operator, and RF still fascinates the heck out of me You can read *all* the books you want, author them even, but antenna theory has far too many variables to ever relegate it to a science, it will always be any art, unless you start talking Very High Powered Microwaves, and even then you better not has the slightest burr on the inside of the waveguide<OMIGOSH&…

Inbox contents simply vanished 1 2 3
by Guest Larry- 68 replies

In OE 6, Windows 98, the entire contents of the Inbox just vanished after restarting computer. There were about 4 weeks of e-mail in there. Other folders do not seem to be affected. I looked in the Outlook Express folder on my hard drive, and the Inbox file at this address: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{9226D728-E116-11DA-8D61-00045A5FABE0}\Microsoft\Outlook Express was down to something like 130 KB, containing just a lot of unreadable code. I normally move Inbox contents to other folders regularly to keep Inbox from getting too large. I've never seen anything like this. The contents of a huge file simply vanishing.

Windows Live - no more Outlook Express 1 2 3
by Guest MEB- 66 replies

Just received notice that there is a new client needed soon to access Hotmail and Live accounts, which apparently only supports XP and Vista. The reason: Microsoft has created another proprietary protocol DeltaSynch to replace its previous proprietary protocol DAV. Someone tell me why users should install ANOTHER Microsoft problematic creation? Another brilliantly stupid idea from Microsoft. So what do others think about this... -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com -- _________
