filesystem
by Guest Jim- 17 replies

The system properties on the performance tab advanced settings has three button choices at the bottom. The first choice is filesystem: desktop, mobile docking, network server. How does this change the filesystem and what are the changes? I remember something on a Aumha discussion about legacy filesystems by Jim Eshelman on this topic, but now I can not find it. Something about network server settings to optimize the HDD. -- Posted via http://computerhelpforums.net Forum to USENET Gateway

Removing a hard drive from a desktop
by Guest Larry- 17 replies

A friend's eight-year-old Windows 98 SE Dell Dimension recently came to the end of its days. The hard drive stopped being accessible. She's throwing the computer out, but wants to keep the hard drive around for possible recovery of data at some point, namely her huge e-mail folder. I was trying to remove the hard drive. I disconnected all the cables, but the hard drive seems immovable. I thought that hard drives were supposed to be relatively easy to remove. I see no moving parts or clips or anything that would enable me to take it out. There are some small screw heads in the corners of the hard drive, but they looked too "locked" into place to be regula…

What MS jpeg viewers are there for win-98?
by Guest 98 Guy- 17 replies
- 1.3k views
Outlook 2000 (running on Win-98) opens jpegs attached to e-mails with MS Paint (at least it does for me). This is also the default viewer when jpegs are opened from explorer. MS Paint does not have the capability to reduce the view to less than 100% or otherwise to "fit to window". What other bitmap viewing programs came with Win-9x or Office 2K Premium that I can easily set as the default viewer that allows more flexible scaling? Bonus question: Can Outlook be configured to display bitmaps (like jpeg's) in-line? I think Outlook Express does this - can Outlook do it too?

Dos Batch File
by Guest Edward- 17 replies
Well.. It's a very advanced question.. It will exercise your minds, and solve my problem.. I thank very much who can help me.. (and forgive me for my poor english) That's the question: I NEED TO KNOW INSIDE A DOS PROGRAM, IF IT WAS CALLED BY AUTOEXEC.BAT OR NOT. In another words: If autoexec is in execution or is finished. I tried this way: Inside the program I tried to modify or delete autoexec.bat. So, if I could, autoexec is close and if I couldn't, it's open and then I'd have my answer... It didn't work, because even when it's running you can delete it, and at the time to run the next command inside it, a message like "batch file is missing…

I am trying to use a spare power supply as a supplemental power supply. There is no room in the case for a second power supply so I put it outside the case and threaded the cables through the back of the computer case then attached the cables to unattached hard drives. Then, I turned-on the spare, external, power supple then turned-on the internal power supple but the spare, external power supple did not turn-on. What should I do?

Will USB 3.0 run on Windows 98 Second Edition
by Guest Dan- 17 replies

I was wondering this because of the recently discovered vulnerability within NT even though Microsoft does not support 98, 98 Second Edition and ME effective as of July 11, 2006. Restricred sites zone
by Guest Jim- 17 replies
Use of the Restricted sites zone to protect against some websites that might damage the machine is fairly straight forward. However, what about files and folders that are under study and need to be in a restricted status? One example that I have seen is in user profiles>cookies that a restricted zone status has been assigned. This is also question of mine, because I did not do that zone assignment. So I guess this is a two fold question here.

ScanDisk, lost cluster
by Guest SANTANDER- 17 replies

Some applications hung up, so I restarted computer. After restart, system start ScanDisk to check hard drive for errors. In log file, there was some info: File system: There was one lost cluster. ScanDisk reclaimed the lost cluster as free space. Does this mean logical error, not physical damage of disk surface? Is it safe for hard drive? Does it possible find the damaged file and remove it? How to make Thorough test without fixing anything? Thanks,

USB ports don't work on Win98SE
by Guest Tooter102- 17 replies
My husband has an old Dell 200Mhz machine that originally came with Win95. Upgraded recently to Win98SE, hoping to get the two factory 1.1 USB ports to work. They still don't. Under Add New Hardware, I was supposedly successful in adding a "USB Composite Device" and a "USB Root Hub". But after doing that, they still did not appear under Device Manager. Any ideas what else I can do?

by Guest Robert A. Macy- 17 replies

On one machine, running Win98 and MS Office 97 on another machine, running WinXP and MS Office 2003 using either machine, every now and then I need to print a 'folder' of documents Is there an easy way to set up for a SINGLE print statement to print all 100+ of these. I've historically clicked to open each one, then print each one, but when there's this many that gets a bit tedious. Sorry, for the wrong group, but I figure you guys know how to do this. Robert

Computer upgrade
by Guest bobster- 17 replies

I have an old P11, 300 MHz computer running Windows 98Se. It does everything I need just fine except the processor speed causes slow page loading from the internet. I can buy a used 1.5 MHz machine for about $100 at a local surplus store. I very much want to stay with 98se as long as I can. My question: Can I take my old "C" and "D" hard drives, fully loaded with Windows 98se (the "C") and all of my apps/drivers and merely put them in the new machine, properly connected to the IDE cable, and thus avoid all the hassle of reformatting, reloading of apps, etc. They are both 20 Gig, 5400 rpm drives and are only about half full.

Wireless and Windows98se
by Guest LL0945- 16 replies

I am trying to connect a windows98se pc situated in an iron garage approx 6ft from the house. I am trying to connect using a wireless netgear wg311v3 pci adapter in the pc. My main router modem is also a Netgear DG834G and is about a further 20 ft away (in the house). I initially found I could connect wirelessly but signal was weak. I therefore invested in a netcomm homeplug np290W combo. This works brilliantly with my main computer in the house as I have located the unit near me. I cannot put this unit in the garage as there is only one power point out there and already it has two power boards connected - although not all points are turned on all th…

I had planned to tell you about something great
by Guest mm- 16 replies

Much of this post is written for a win98 audience, but not all of it. I had planned to tell you about something great, about software for win98 that would soon disappear, so you should get it now. But now I'm not sure what to say. I'm talking about free photo arranging and editing software. When developing film, I've been getting a copy put on CD, and this would also apply to digital camera images. I've been getting one roll done at as many different processors as possible. Kodak, Ritz Camera (is that only around here?), Walmart, and any place else that seems to use a different processor, because each processor has its own software on the CD. Mor…

Having problem downloading big files !! Help !!!
by Guest hsyq8xg@gmail.com- 16 replies

I am using ADSL, 2Mbit / s connection. Lately am having much difficulties in downloading big files. Downloading stops at around the point of 50 MByte or so. Just stay there, no error message, just stay there. Nothing. At first I thought it was IE that went nuts. So I tried downloading with FireFox. Same things happen. Then I tried Opera. Same thing ! If I use download manager like WellGet, the file can be downloaded, no problem. But if I try downloading large files with browsers, it just stay there, around 50 MBytes, it didn't say "error" or something, the download line still open, but even if I left it overnight, it still stays there. Dunno what t…
