Windows Media Player

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes. I Have an old Dell 266 running W98FE and for some reason I can not get any sound from Windows Media Player 7.1. It is not Muted and the volume slider is at Max. Other audio players (Real, IfranView, and Musicmatch) work great. I did have some major Bootup problems a few weeks ago and through blind luck I got the computer working by reinstalling Windows over top of it's self(a no-no) Which I had to do a second time and then run Windows RegClean to get it to Boot. Restore would not solve the problem. I did re-install WMP7.1 and I have scanned my computer with AVG, AdAware, Spybo…

Memory management

Hello, I have a group of computers (PIV) with Win98 and WinXP, it had 500 MB RAM. I have increase memory up to 1 GB. WinXP boots a lot faster, but when loading W98 it reboots and only can boot in save mode. I have been making proves and it boots well with 750 MB. This system has little free space on disk. I have other group of computers (also PIV but newer) that have also Win98 and WinXP, also with 1 GB of RAM and Win98 has no problem booting. If someone has any idea about this problem... Thanx in advance.

When I open "my computer", I see a partition labeled E. The total size is blank. The free space is blank. I tryed to access E but the message "E is not accessable' appeared. I am certain that E does not actually exist so I would like to delete it. I tryed deleting various drivers in the Device Manager window but that did not solve the problem. How can I delete partition E?

logoff&standby
by Guest Jim- 7 replies

Hello, I recently got ADSL hooked up to the NIC which in my case is a HP Ethernet adapter. The BB connection is long overdue for me. Unfortunately, when user goes to lunch etc. and puts the local_machine on standby, the APM does this, but about a minute later the machine comes up out of standby mode leaving the screen blank with a cursor blinking in the upper left of screen. If the user chooses to logoff and standby for next users the same thing happens. If the user allows the power management in windows to bring the machine into standby, it turns off the monitor and that is as far as it gets in the sequence. This machine has ACPI. Any thoughts here on what to do…

A friend's Windows 98 SE at start made clicking sounds from hard drive, then said startup disk was needed. Startup disk was inserted. Screen said: Pri Master HDD Error Run Setup Press F1 to resume Then it said Start computer with CD Rom support or Without CD-Rom support We didn't know which to choose so we went with CD Rom support Then it said PCI Bus Scan completed C drive does not contain FAT or FAT 32 partition Drive may need to be partitioned Run Fdisk from DOS prompt But there was only a prompt for the A drive, and we couldn't get it to change to the C drive, so we did HELP. Help said a lot of stuff about loading CDRom Driver and RamDrive…

Installing a winXP driver on a win98 machine...
by Guest Brad Pears- 9 replies

We have a shared printer hooked up to an older Win98 desktop machine. The printer is an HP PSC 2210 all-in-one. When an XP user attempts to add a printer and specifies the shared printer location i.e. \\computername\printername they are then asked to select a driver etc.... Windows XP does not include a driver by default for the PSC 2210 so it means the user has to use the "Have Disk" option and locate the driver CD or install from a network location. Is there a way I can add the XP driver to the WIn98 machine so that the driver will be automatically installed on their XP machines when they add the printer? I am thinking it can't likely be done (the reverse…

Laptop connectors
by Guest ms- 5 replies

I saw a used old laptop at a garage sale, a Dell 486. There are many jacks around the case, but I don't recognize any as the usual telephone jacks I see on a desktop modem. Does the laptop modem jack look different? Is there a URL to a image of a typical laptop identifying connectors? Also, with a missing floppy disk drive, so no boot disk possibility, how do you get into Safe Mode with just a CD drive? ms

Identity Stolen Again 1 2
by Guest Dan- 30 replies

I think I told most of you how my social security card was stolen in a 2005 break in when I lived in Tucson Arizona. In addition, the computers were attempted to access but fortunately mine had a BIOS password and stopped the intruder. Well, this time I was working on Michelle Mora's image being illegally put on a Painted Sky Elementary School computer and the next thing I know my administrator passwords are changed and I am locked out of the two computers I was working on. This fall a cable was missing from the sub station area. I am now being blamed for computer sabotage. I know my work identity has been stolen. Oh Well, I had planned on not giving…

The smaller files consist of 173 blocks containing 615 C0h bytes plus one zero byte. If I delete these files, they will reappe…
