BIOS problem
by Guest McDermotts- 8 replies

I know this is off subject for this group, but have gotten great info here before and hoping for some help. Please excuse if not proper ettiquette. I have an old AOpen AX6BC motherboard. Per AOpens advise, I tried to install BIOS update so the system would recognize the larger drive I added to the system. During the update process, something went wrong and a message flashed that said "UNKNOWN FLASH TYPE". Since then, the system will not even boot and no monitor. If I turn it on with the floppy containing the BIOS file in the drive it tries to read for a while and then stops. Same thing if I power on with a startup floppy in drive a. Also, if I power with e…

notepad false error message

I dont have a problem here, but post this here in case someone else face the same situation. Misleading information from Notepad: When i edit (file is windows\inf\applets.inf), select all, copy and paste to a new file, first time works with notepad. paste again to the same target file without quiting, this time doesn't work. The error message is this: "Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again." but when I apply it to EditPad (freeware), no problem at all. So the problem is not because of insufficient memory, but something is wrong with Notepad error message.…

System is acting very strange - What do I do? 1 2 3
by Guest John- 59 replies

Hello. I am using an old Windows 98 computer that doesn't seem to work properly. Apart from all the hard drive and boot problems, there are more problems with the drivers on the computer. Here are the problems: 1. When I finally decided to try it (after some considerable time) it said that it found a permanent hard drive failure. What The? 2. At startup, the sound driver produces this loud 'BEEP'. I have no idea what it is, but it also happens when I insert the PC Card. There is also no sound. 3. After installing a mouse driver from a CD, it told me that the driver would be ready to use - after resolving a conflict. Do I fix it? Yes. But it d…

My kids were playing with my older laptop and tried to use the install disk. Unfortunatly they did not complete the set-up process and I don't have an ID Key. Microsoft support would not help me since the version is unsupported. Any way to get a key for this thing?

How do I fix a jumbled Save File list
by Guest Resident- 2 replies
When I right click on a picture and select "Save As" the pop up window has the list of files all jumbled. When I right click in that list and do an "Arrange Icons" - "By Name", the list is sorted in reverse alpha. Repeating this does not result in an forward alpha sort. This happens in several applications: OE6, MS Image Composer, MS Photo Editor to name a few. How do I fix this? I'd like the default to be fwd alpha, but I'll settle for getting Arrange Icons - By Name to do a fwd alpha sort. Thanks Oscar

Desktop Switched between two hard drives
by Guest SteveG- 6 replies

A friend has an old eMachines 480i in his office, with two phyiscal hard drives; a C: drive (named "Server") and a D: drive named "Presario." The "D" drive came from a former computer and contains his office management software. Until Friday, when the computer would boot, it would finish up on the "D" drive's desktop. But Friday, we saw that it booted to the "C" drive's desktop. He swears he didn't change anything and using the DOS window, I can still see the "D" drive and all of its files. We have an upgrade coming up on Tuesday of the office management software. As background, the only reason we stayed on Windows 98, was that we had been told, until th…

How to reinstall Win98 from Resource CD
by Guest cjkulow- 9 replies

Hi All! Have formatted my hd, have startup boot disk, have Dell Reinstallation CD, have product key, and after I startup with boot floppy, choose "with CD ROM support," I see that the CD ROM drive is read. Have Reinstall CD that came with my computer in CD drive, but when I'm at the e:\ prompt and type "setup" I get message "Bad command, or file not found." I looked at the CD contents at a different computer and cannot find a setup.exe file, or similar. What am I missing? I've read several instructions on reinstalling WIN98 and always get stuck at the same point when I am supposed to type "setup". Thanks for any help! I am not DOS savvy - perhaps that's t…

Solution: was "Fix OE errors"

Thanks to all, finally nutted it out thanks to a fantastic forum with a cynosure on Australian Broadband http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum.cfm snipped: I believe Primus News server use Pipenetworks as there upstream provider for newsgroups. Unfortunately, Pipenetworks have recently decided to turn off there news server with little or no notice as they decided it is not worth maintaining newsgroups. There is a thread on this over in the peering forum. The net result is that your posts to the primus news server are going nowhere but the Primus news server. This will only be solved if Primus get a new upstream provider but for now I don't belive the…

Icon Confusion 1 2 3
by Guest HN@invalid.com- 71 replies

This is Win98se For some reason there is some icon confusion going on. For example, I have a program called "Hosts Toggle" (to turn on and off the hosts file). Right now, all files with the PDF extension have the icon from "Hosts Toggle". Text files (.txt) have an icon from another program instead of the notepad icon. The next time I reboot, the icons will be different and some other extension will have the wrong icon, for example last night all the ..jpg files had an icon from another folder on my desktop. Everything else is working fine. Why is this happeningt and how do I fix it? Thanks HN

Ripper virus removal
by Guest David W- 1 reply

Hello, I've not used this group before but if someone could point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Trying to fix friends laptop with 98 installed. Gets just past boot up then we get Norton warning (in a DOS screen) that the "Ripper virus was found in memory" and to press ok to continue. The screen then tells me I need a Norton rescue boot disk then shuts down the laptop. I know this seems a bit dense but I just thought I'd check that, given I don't have such a rescue disk nor am I likely to locate it, is there anything at all I can do other than throw the thing away? I could reload 98 if I could find a way to reformat the disc (and find th…
