98SE and XP Professional Stability
by Guest Dan- 14 replies

I thank PCR and my friend Jeff for all of their help in getting me back on firm ground again with a clean install of 98SE and an over-install of XP Professional. The surprising thing was that at the end XP Professional was becoming more unstable than 98SE. Yes, XP Professional had the dreaded BSOD (Blue Screens of Death) that were related to sound driver issues and 98SE also had the sound driver issues from the Sound Blaster Audigy. Jeff reminded me of a simple fact that I had completely forgotten about being away from this newsgroup for so long. The fact about getting rid of everything related to all the extra junk programs with the Sound Blaster Audi…

Network with Win98 and WinXP
by Guest Rosivaldo Fernandes Alves- 12 replies

I have an old computer with Win98 installed and a new computer with WinXP installed? How can I safely put both to work together in a home network? I'm afraid of allowing the Win98 to access the internet, since it doesn't have automatic update from Microsoft, so it may have security holes that will never be closed. How can I solve these questions? Thanks in advance. Rosivaldo.

Seek opinion on "fix OE errors" 1 2
by Guest Rod- 29 replies

I'd like to run one of the free fix-it programs "fix OE errors" available on the web. Any recomendations? warnings? Just checking with the cognoscenti. Any problems are probably with my ISP, my OE shows posts to my fav Newsgroup, but they are not getting replies, nor showing up in Google, so I thought I give these programs a fly, in part, to appease my anxiety. Praise to the knowledgeable.

More Network Password Issues
by Guest Jay- 18 replies

Greetings! I'm posting this after reading the thread started 07/21/07, and not having any success with those suggestions. I have several old Win98 machines which used to be networked. Now they're stand-alones, but they keep asking for the username and password. If I type in anything or nothing at all and click OK, I get a residual message from the old network days saying that the default desktop will be loaded. The previous "administrator" locked out the Control Panels, and now not only can't I stop the thing from asking for usernames and passwords, I can't adjust any settings or install some software I need on them. Is there some way to reset it wit…

Computer keeps reseting
by Guest Dan- 19 replies

I have a computer at work and it is fully patched through Windows Update but it keeps resetting. It is a Windows Millenium computer and I was wondering if someone here had some ideas about it. In addition, can someone do me a favor and cross-post this question to the Windows Millenium general newsgroup also. I notice Windows ME only has one newsgroup left so I wanted to post here since there are so many experts and I do not know about the Windows Me general newsgroup people.

I forgot what the utility is that you can easily bring up in 98SE to renew and refresh your ip address. Can someone please enlighten me and save me from a lot of annoying searching with Google. Thanks in advance!

Invalid class string
by Guest Kindrick Ownby- 1 reply

All of a sudden my Canon digital camera software, ZoomBrowser, produces the message "Invalid class string" when I try to run it by double-clicking on the icon. The computer did freeze when accessing some web page recently, but I haven't run the camera software for some time. I re-installed the software that came with the camera, and I get the same result. Should I uninstall/delete all the camera stuff before the re-install? Any suggestions? TIA, Kindrick

Local Area connection - task bar display
by Guest Sunny- 2 replies

Is it possible to show the local area/activity connection icon on the task bar? It's the small icon of two computers. (Using Win98SE on another PC and connected to my ISP by cable) It doesn't seem as easy to find it like in WinXP :-)
