help = can't edit hosts file because it won't let me pick a program.
by Guest SlickRCBD- 16 replies
I've just had something weird pop up. I tried to edit my hosts file, but instead of being asked what program I want to use to open it with, I got a dialog box telling me "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking View and then clicking Folder Options". Something in the registry is probably messed up, how do I fix it so that it goes back to giving me a list of programs so I can click on notepad?

Unable to Register Win98SE online...
by Guest JWBDolphins- 16 replies
I installed Windows 98 SE yesterday and have been trying to Register it via the online process. I run the registration wizard, fill out all the info, regwiz dials microsoft, authenticates on the network, and connects to the MSN Site. At which point it sits for a few minutes and finally hangs up with the msg: "The Microsoft Registration web site is currently busy, try registering again." The problem is - I've received this message all yesterday afternoon, all last night, and now today too. My Question is - Is Msft currently allowing Win98SE registrations?, did that go away with the dropping of Win98 support?, or is the registration web site just…

Updates for Windows 98 - where?
by Guest buffalo rider- 16 replies

Does anyone have the URL for Windows 98 updates on the Microsoft website, or any other website. I installed Windows 98 from CD on an older laptop that I still use, and want to add Windows98 updates. This used to be on the Microsoft website. I can no longer find it. I had the Windows 98 updates in a separate file on my new computer -- for burning to CD -- but I must have accidently deleted them. I went back to the Microsoft website to download the updates once more, but could not find them using the links that Microsoft provides.

Fatal exceptions
by Guest vandenplas- 16 replies
Hello. I'm running Windows 98SE on a 433mhz Gateway with 256mb. For the last month or two I've only been able to read/write 3 or 4 emails before I have to restart the computer. Same thing holds true for surfing the web. I've actually been putting up with this but now I can connect to Aol but it freezes shortly after the welcome screen loads. In the last three days I've had 9 different fatal exceptions. I have tried searching each on on the internet from my other computer but don't find them mentioned anywhere. I ran memtest from microsoft but it said my memory was fine. Any suggestions? Cheers, John

Dead machine, loose connection?
by Guest ms- 16 replies
History on this generic P550 machine: Appeared dead. A month later, setting it on a bench, it ran fine. Used it occasionally for 6 months, did have to bump the case a few times to get it going. Shut down normally the last time. A week later, dead. I bumped it again, nothing. Opened it up expecting to see an obvious loose connection, everything looks tight. The only symptom, when AC applied, the 3 lights (power, hard drive, ??) flash, then off. What does the symptom indicate, and to proceed from here? ms

Skype vs. Net2Phone
by Guest mm- 16 replies
The download page for Skype says that it works on win2000 and XP, it might even say you must have one of those, but does that mean for sure that a program written for 2000/xp won't run on win98SE or WinME? Also Google Earth says that and so I didn't install it, but maybe I should have tried, if there is some chance it would run. Could it do any damage to install one of these where it wasn't designeed to go? If I can't do this, does anyone know if Net2Phone (which does work on winme and 98SE) can be used to call Skype commputers?

"Error loading KERNEL" message
by Guest Olin K. McDaniel- 16 replies

Hopefully this won't get too longwinded, but as a bit of background, I recently upgraded my hardware and wanted to keep all the software as before. I installed a new M.B. and CPU to go from a 600MHz Pentium 3 unit to a 2.6 GHz Celeron unit. Also I cloned over the multiboot OS's from drive 1 to another HD, since the older one was showing signs of failing. The program used for cloning was Acronis True Image. There were 3 OS's on Drive 1, and they also are now on the newly installed HDD. The heart of the multiboot system is Powerquest's Boot Magic, that has worked wonderfully for years. The 3 OS's are DOS 6.22 (rarely used anymore), Windows 98SE (most heavily …

I have a ten year old computer with the following characteristics: 300 MHz Intel P11 CPU 320 megs ram Win 98SE 4 MHz cable connection Host file active SpywareBlaster AdAware ie-spyad ZoneAlarm AVAST! antivirus And many other apps not on my startup list. I keep all of the protection apps up to date. I scan disk and defrag regularly. My question/problem: My computer seems to be getting slower. When I click on a high content URL like MSNBC, NYT, Wash Post ,Yahoo! or eBay, it seems to take typically as much as 30 seconds to load completely - sometimes as much as one minute. While this is not a huge problem, time was when a page would load in a s…

This is an old Compaq Presario 8702 P166, in a recent thread, converted from W95 to DOS. I want to get into BIOS setup. Compaq data says: ----- "NOTE: On certain Compaq Presario PCs (prior to 2002) press the F10 key at the logo screen to enter setup." ----- Pressing F10, F1, Escape, (this from other Compaq data). It continues to boot to a DOS C prompt. Can't get into Setup. Advice? ms

Previously my network (containing a W98) was wired. I have changed to wireless. I am able to access email and internet alright form the W98, but how do I make files and printers of the W98 accessible by other boxes in the wireless network? When the W98 was hard-wired up there was no problem in doing that, however, now being wirelessed up, I cannot solve the access problem. Adrian.

In order to end 17 years of intense study after just 4 or so, I hope for a quick answer to the following question. Here is my Kerio "Primary DNS Server" rule, got from some expert & currently modified only in that I now include the entire NetZero/Juno address range (where earlier I tried to determine just the ones NetZero seemed to want to use)... Primary DNS Server rule Protocol: UDP, both directions Local Endpoint-- Ports: 1024-5000 -- Application: Any Remote Endpoint-- Address: Entire NetZero/Juno range -- Port: 53 ANY app can use it, as currently wri…

We can't help if you don't tell us what is wrong?
by Guest Dan- 16 replies

Are you spamming the newsgroup on purpose or is there another motive. Asking more than once does not usually help your case and like I said in the subject --- tell us your problem with the Ati Radeon 9800 Pro. and we will see if we can help you. It would be great to have a name too instead of unknown especially since all of us unknowns are eventually discovered anyway when we use the Internet.

go back?
by Guest CdLSRN- 15 replies

I have windows 98se. Dell XPST450 came with Adobe Photo Delux Business Edition. I bought Adobe Photo Delux Home Edition. Everything has been fine. Today I downloaded a free, recommended by c-net picture editor that didn't work well for me so I uninstalled it. Then when I opened a picture I got a message "cannot find the file C:\...............jpg (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." but the picture would come up anyway. So I uninstalled Photo deluxe Home Edition and Photo deluxe Business Edition and re-installed Home Edition with the CD. I am still getting the same error message…

Dang XP anyway...
by Guest dadiOH- 15 replies

I need to set up a Win98/XP dual boot, gotta buy an XP version. I have no need for the extended features of XP Pro so it will be XP Home. I am sure this has been answered before so please forgive my questions... 1. Since I have Win98, can WinXP Home UPGRADE be used for a clean (total) install to a different, primary, active partition (on the same drive)? 2. Any advantage one way or the other of an upgrade version vs non-upgrade OEM version? My main concern at the moment is whether to purchase an upgrade or OEM version. Full retail is out of the running. Thanks. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help …

Start menu
by Guest Emrys Davies- 15 replies
- 1.3k views
I have Win98 SE, OE6 and IE6. I am curious to know of which system the 'Start' menu is a part. I have read lots about it on Google and although there are lots of good articles about it and its components no one says whether it is part of Windows, Windows Explorer or Outlook Express. I suspect that it is the former but would someone put me out of my misery? Thanks, Emrys Davies.

A hidden registry key?
by Guest ms- 15 replies
- 1.2k views
I use Winpatrol, and it kept showing a warning that Script Sentry wanted to open reg extensions. I selected No. I uninstalled Script Sentry, no help, deleted all files on the drive for Script Sentry, no help. I ran RegSeeker, cleaned all "safe" entries, and searched for SS, no entries. I ran RegEdit, searched for SS, no entries. I don't like them, but ran a relatively safe cleaner, Wise Registry Cleaner, still get the WinPatrol warning screen, the path it shows does not exist in my Utilities folder. Cold boots in between. So it appears Script Sentry is still somewhere in my registry, how to locate it? ms
