Computer Starting to Slowdown!!!?
by Guest The Pete- 3 replies

My computer is approximately 2 months old and now has just recently started to slow down after 3-4 hrs of use after each bootup. I have scanned for viruses, malware/spyware, uninstalled unecessary programs, defragmentized the hard drive, run diskcheck and cleared cookies and temporary files from Internet Explorer. After a few hrs the system slows down substantially thus making it difficult to browse the net and switch inbetween programs. I am currently running: Windows XP SP2 (with all updates), Pentium Core Duo 2.4ghz, 2 Gigs of Ram, Norton Internet Security. Any thoughts?

When you copy or click on the above links, note that there is a "_" at the end of each file name. Like this: /files/2007/5/26/1113604/fdisk.ex_ Maybe you're not seeing that or copying it correctly.

Both my drives aren't recognizing the CDs I put into them. When I go into Device Manager though there are no open devices, all +'s. Do I need to use the drivers that came with the devices to get these drives working properly? I'm using Windows 98 SE. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, attilathehun1 -- attilathehun1

Document generator

I use Keyform to generate special documents. However, I have to design the documents on a machine running Win 3.1 because the program has serious problems under Win98. Is there a similar program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg (just an arm is O.K.). and will run correctly under Win98? The minimum that I need is font selection, lines and boxes and extreme zoom. "Extreme zoom" refers to being able to magnify a 3 pt. font to a size that single letters can be grabbed by the mouse. Typical paint programs are out because they usually have rough looking lines and boxes. Thanks for any info. Jack --

I'm using win98SE and it is now 2007. A developing application I use finds conflict with the tooltip display feature and crashes when Windows tries to display a tooltip message. I would like to disable tooltip messages if I can. I can get along without them. Does anyone know how to do this?

98 SE; system purchased in '99' Started "Old Faithful" tonight and it won't even run the POST. Least not all of it. I get to a screen that detects the mouse, keyboard and cd-rom and proper amt. of RAM. Or is that all the POST? That's as far as it goes. It just stays on that screen. Does not respond to system setup key; startup floppy never starts. Any thoughts? Thanks

Shot in the dark 1 2
by Guest Tom Brown- 33 replies

Hi, I am going to ask for help without being able to give you too much information. I have a friend who has an old computer with Win 98 and he can't open IE. He tells me that when he tries to open it, it gives him and error message that says it needs to shut down because of some conflict problem and then it quits. Any suggestions on where he/I can start to get IE working again. If not, I can get more detailed info tomorrow. Thanks, Tom

Unable to Register Win98SE online...
by Guest JWBDolphins- 16 replies

I installed Windows 98 SE yesterday and have been trying to Register it via the online process. I run the registration wizard, fill out all the info, regwiz dials microsoft, authenticates on the network, and connects to the MSN Site. At which point it sits for a few minutes and finally hangs up with the msg: "The Microsoft Registration web site is currently busy, try registering again." The problem is - I've received this message all yesterday afternoon, all last night, and now today too. My Question is - Is Msft currently allowing Win98SE registrations?, did that go away with the dropping of Win98 support?, or is the registration web site just…

Delayred Response after Closing IE
by Guest DavidB- 3 replies

When I close my last Internet Explorer window and click on another program icon (or the Start Menu), the hour glass sits there for almost a minute and one-half (80 seconds) before the requested program starts. I am running a Pentium 233 MHz with 128 Meg of Ram. Is there a setting in Internet Options or elsewhere that I can use to try to fix this delay?
