None of my three Win98 computers have Power Management capability, yet one of them puts "Stand by" as a choice on the shut down menu. What causes the difference in these menu lists? Can I modify it to remove the "Stand by" choice?

my sapphire video card cannot enable 3D acceleration

hi all. Oh dear! I tracked a problem, but I need more help in fixing it. I just bought a new sapphire 9600xt, to replace a "crappy" nividia gf5200. [yes, the graphic improvements are Treeeemendus!] I was somewhat mystified when my Gothic II would stop at the game loading screen when the exe called it up, even though this old card would not work well, i expected to be able to get maybe to the loading screen, at least. my new 9600xt has the same problem! also morrowind will also not load. but baldurs gate II and neverwinter nights will load. at first i thought this was an issue with the new cd-rw rom. The morrowind files has a "program flow" sheet…

Question about SIMM and DIMM combination in an old computer.

Hello gang, I know this is not strictly 98-related but I know there are some real brains in here. As some of you may recall, I have a computer which will be 10 years old in September. It works fine. Really. Please don't just tell me to throw it in the trash and get a new one. When it dies for good, I will. At the moment I need nothing more. {I have a 2GHz machine for things requiring more speed than 166MHz offers (which incidentally - IMHO - does not include accessing the internet).} Anyway, the almost-10-yrs-old machine has a PC Chips M572 MB, with 6 RAM slots. 2 are DIMM, 4 are SIMM. It can take a total of 256MB of memory and the manual p…

Re: Question about SIMM and DIMM combination in an old computer - UPDATE Thank you VERY much to all who replied (quite extensively in some cases) to my post and have helped me solve the problem. WARNING: A long and boring description of what I did follows between the two rows of asterisks. ***** I had no idea whatsoever that DIMMs ran on 3.3 or 5V. I have had the 4 16MB SIMMs since the day I got the computer. Of course, my DIMM does not say which voltage it likes, but I read on one site that it really couldn't damage anything if the voltage was wrong ("couldn't damage" meaning, I suppose, AOT just screwing everything up). So the first thing I …

I've installed one application, but it was too ugly and I want throw it out. It placed all files in C:\Program files directory without creating appropriate folder. I checked setup log and find files it installed. I am not sure for one file: VB40032.DLL - does program installed this file or it has rewrited an existing file? Anyway, can I remove this VB40032.DLL file? Setup start: 2007-07-04 22:53:39 Desktop directory detected as: C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\ Installation Path: C:\Program Files\ Created file (1): C:\Program Files\VB40032.DLL Created file (2): C:\Program Files\Autorun Action Flash Help.hlp Created file (3): C:\Program Files\Autorun Action Flash Wizard.exe…

Install error message: Not enough space on D
by Guest Satish Gupta- 3 replies

When installing Windows 98 SE using the original CD ROM, I get his message: Not enough space on D To install Win 98 on drive C, you need 21 mb of space on D. D has only 1.4 mb To take care of this problem, please remove some files from hard drive. Hard drive is drive C. How would that free up space on D? Actually, there is no drive D, unless it is some sort of virtual drive. When partitioning the hard drive, I put everything in C. In other words, i did not create two partitions on the hard drive. Is that not acceptable and causing the problem? Thanks Satish

Win98 RD client no longer able to connect to XP Pro
by Guest Karlof- 9 replies

I have a client that has a WINDOWS 98SE Laptop. He has been using the laptop for years to connect to a handful of XP Pro computers using the Win98 RD Client. Suddenly he is getting the message "The client could not connect to the remote computer ..." on about 50% of the computers he tries to connect to. These are computers that he was previously able to connect with. If I try to connect to these unreachable machines using an XP box I am able to make the connection. Nothing has changed on his end, and the connections are actually saved as shortcuts (I have tried re-creating them on the fly, but this didn't help). Has some windows update occurred on the remo…
