Can you use a Win98 PC with dedicated printer attached as a print server for Vista laptop ? I can set up my printer to share over network and Vista laptop sees printer on network but Vista won't connect. Do I have to declare this legacy print server a Win 98SE machine somehow ? Probably more a Vista question and I have posted but thought someone must have experience in trying this.

Changing default email program
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 15 replies

I have been using Eudora for email for a long time. I intend to keep using it. I just installed Thunderbird to see what it does. During installation it asked me if I wanted to set Thunderbird as the default email program, but I did not understand what it was asking until too late. Now Thunderbird is the default. I DO NOT want TB to be the default, I still want Eudora to be the default. The older version of Eudora I use does not have this setting, so I am not sure how to get back Eudora as the default email software. Where is this setting located? If it's in the registry, I can change it with regedit, but I just dont know where this setting is locate…

by Guest Angel- 15 replies

Hi everyone, I was thinking of installing a second hard drive or getting an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up files. I have 2, 1.1 USB ports. One is occupied by my APC battery backup and the other, I am using a Belkin 4 plug in hub. What is the best way to go? Do I need drives for these options? What do I need for this purpose. I am running Windows 98SE on this machine. TIA Angel

hi Group, I am still a win98se fan, but have gone thhrough so many app installations and de-installations that my registry and hard drive have become a mess. In the past, I just re-installed win98. But since support has been dropped, I am curious whether the microsoft updates are still available? I searched through the archives of this ng, and evidently microsoft was still making the win98 updates available -- at least up until the end of 2006. Does anybody know if they are still available??? thanks in advance for any help, jw

Which firewall is best for Win98se. I asked this question of the firewall group and the security group and they pointed me to http://www.oldapps.com/. I did not see Kerio there as someone had suggested. I am not sure that it works with windows 98..They also told me to change my OS or get a new P.C. Does anyone have a recommendation? I downloaded Sygate 5.5 build 2577,but I am not sure it is suggested for win98. I know the newer build up isn't. Any suggestions?

Browser Wars

As Microsoft continues to lose market share to Mozilla Firefox many must be wondering how come Microsoft tries to integrate I.E. and Windows Media Player into their operating system. I would like a bare bones XP and Vista that came without these extras. Mozilla Firefox supports 256 bit cipher strength all the way back to Windows 98/98SE. Mozilla Firefox does not have Active X to be compromised. According to secunia.com --- Internet Explorer still has many issues. http://secunia.com/product/14068/?task=advisories http://secunia.com/product/13/?task=advisories http://secunia.com/product/22/?task=advisories http://secunia.com/product/11/?task=advi…

Installing New Desktop Wallpaper on Win98SE
by Guest pixturesk@gmail.com- 15 replies

I am trying to install a new 98SE wallpaper from the folder C:\Windows \Resources, to where I extracted 2 folders with a new wallpaper in each. The instructions were to click on the registry icon in the folder to install the registry entry into the registry which was successful. However, when I go to Display, then click on the far left tab, these new wallpapers are not there in the list. How can I locate these wallpapers then try them on my desktop? I am not that tech savvy, so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

We have one remaining Windows 98 se CD in the organization that I can find and it is not readable any longer. I need to re-install Win98 SE on one of our older P2 machines that can't be upgraded to run anything else. Win98 will work fine for use with terminal services. Repair Windows XP by using the XP installation CD
by Guest admin_papa- 15 replies
Hello Everybody Just wanted to share my new experience. If your system fails to start due to an error corresponding to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Just boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Launch "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot Cheers, Carl -- admin_papa

I am referring to PCR and the "So-Called" XP radiation and how the effects of Vista radiation appear to be even stronger in making people mean to each other. Here is a recent example: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.general&tid=ca9f815c-3652-4563-a0e4-4c4f5a4467ea&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=en-us&p=1 There are a lot of posts here that were deleted so the effects of Vista radiation are clear. Do you agree, PCR? <Smile>

MS Security patch doesn't "take" with successive scans
by Guest turbguy- 14 replies
Running Win 98 SE, Upon visiting the Mocrosoft Windowns Update site, it scans my systems and says I need: "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)" I do use OE (version 6.00.2800.1123), so I click on install, and it goes "through the motions". No reboot required... I scan again, and I get the SAME result, I need: "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)" I check my installation history, and it indicates the Update was successfully installed! I re-install, and rescan, same result! What gives??

Large Word files and 98SE
by Guest Graham C- 14 replies

Word and Win98SE problems I am currently working with a number of large .DOC files, typically 400 pages, lots of photos and diagrams etc. They are between 5 and 60 Meg in size (I know I'm a glutton for punishment, but I didn't create these files) There are two interesting problems: 1) One 50 Meg file always opens in around 10 secs when it is double clicked. Another file of a similar size takes around three minutes to open. In each case the PC was clean booted from cold. 2) I can copy small files from drive to drive with no problem. With an 8 Meg DOC file it takes a little longer - typically 20 seconds. But with a DOC file greater than about 10 Meg: …

The Future in Computing
by Guest Dan- 14 replies

I am certainly looking forward to the future in computing. There will be so many opportunities and sky computing certainly looks more promising now as time goes on. However, I for one am a guy who likes old-school computing while enjoying new computing as well when it is needed to accomplish the task at hand. Windows Vista has been available for a while now and now we also have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and soon will have Windows 7. Meanwhile, the browser wars are really heating up and Google has gotten into the act with its Chrome browser which I have not bothered to try out yet but know I will eventually try it out on the Windows XP Professional s…

No IRQ for graphic card in Windows 95
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 14 replies
I have two 486/586 machines running Win95B. One has a Cirrus Logic VLB graphics card based on a CL-GD5428 chipset, the other has an S3 Trio V64+ PCI card. The latter card has a 2-pin interrupt header which I have jumpered, and I have also enabled "assign IRQ to VGA" in the BIOS setup. Neither machine assigns an IRQ to its graphics card. It appears that these cards are polled, much like standard (non-EPP/ECP) parallel printer ports which also don't get an IRQ in Device Manager. OTOH, my Win 98SE box does assign an IRQ to its PCI card (Diamond Stealth III S540). Is this normal behaviour? FWIW, both motherboards have UMC chipsets. - Franc Zabkar -- Please…

Re-installing on laptop with no CD drive
by Guest Alpha- 14 replies
We need to re-install Windows 98 SE or ME or 2K-Pro on a laptop that has its CD drive internal connection damaged. The floppy drive works though. We have all the original Windows CDs and a Win98 boot floppy, as well as all the required drivers. The unit originally had Win98 on it that was later upgraded to WinME and subsequently to Win2K-Pro. Can we - take out the hard drive and format it (using appropriate existing adapters) in FAT on another machine and - copy the CD contents and device drivers to an install folder, and - put that drive back into the laptop, and - boot with the Win98 floppy, and - run Setup from the install folder, bypassing the CD drive? …

Reinstall Win98SE Without A Floppy Drive?
by Guest DaffyD®- 14 replies

I've read in this newsgroup that Windows should be reinstalled about every 2 years. As I wrote in earlier posts, the floppy drive on my computer has a problem--I think it's the controller--so I can't use a boot disk. The question is, after reformatting the hard drive, can Windows be installed from the cd without installing the cd drivers from the Win98SE boot disk? -- { : [|]=( DaffyD® If I knew where I was I'd be there now.
