Very OT, size of PDF files.
by Guest mm- 14 replies

Don't know where else to discuss this, because afaik there id no adobe or pdf newsgroup. I bought something that came with a CD and on it was the owners manual, which was a 9 meg pdf file. Looking for later software, I went to their website and downloaded the manual, which was 2 megs. Strangely, they look identical, each 68 pages, and when I alt-tab from one to the other in Acrobat, I can't see any difference in quality. Anyone have experience with this. If you are inclined to email me for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-)

98SE and XP Professional Stability
by Guest Dan- 14 replies
I thank PCR and my friend Jeff for all of their help in getting me back on firm ground again with a clean install of 98SE and an over-install of XP Professional. The surprising thing was that at the end XP Professional was becoming more unstable than 98SE. Yes, XP Professional had the dreaded BSOD (Blue Screens of Death) that were related to sound driver issues and 98SE also had the sound driver issues from the Sound Blaster Audigy. Jeff reminded me of a simple fact that I had completely forgotten about being away from this newsgroup for so long. The fact about getting rid of everything related to all the extra junk programs with the Sound Blaster Audi…

Converting USB 1.1 front panel Ports to USB 2.0 ?
by Guest Dingwhistle- 14 replies
Anyone know if its possible to adapt a Dell Desktop Tower 'puters front panel OEM USB 1.1 ports to be USB 2.0 enabled ? Currently, the front panel USB 1.1 ports connect to the Motherboard by some header type plug/socket (looks like a sort of IDE type cable). I have a USB 2.0 PCI card installed and that makes the two inconveniently located rear ports USB 2.0 capable, but not the front 2. They are still USB 1.1. Hope someone might know how to modify this to make it work Thanks.

External Hard Drive Driver
by Guest Scott- 14 replies
I have a 500GB Western Digital external hard drive that I use for Acronis image backups for my various systems. The drive is set up for Windows 2000 system and above. When I connect it via USB to my Win 98SE machine, it looks for driver, but can't locate one. (none came with the external drive). Is there any way to find a driver that will allow me to use this drive on a Win 98 machine? There's no special software on this external drive, just a standard USB 2.0 cable. Thanks! Scott

Intrigued
by Guest Tony Yarwood- 14 replies

Hi everybody Sorry to bother you all with this, it's not really a problem more of a query. I run 98SE as my main os, well the turbo-charged version, patched with the unofficial SP2 and Axcel's 98SE->ME. If anybody here's not tried it you should, it hums! Anyway I digress, even with the superpatch there are various gaming sites that still won't work, I think it's that bloody bloatware Flash Player crap that so many think they need to use these days. So what I've had to do is dual boot with win2k, and everything is working just dandy. However this is where the query arises, I've got a copy of Opera on both partitions and they seem to be linking so…

Win 98se wallpaper question.
by Guest kraut- 14 replies
On my one system that has 98se on it when I use a pic for wallpaper that is in portrait size (Taller then wide) Windows stretches the width so it fills the whle screen but the height stays the same. My second system which also has 98se shows it in portrait size with blank space on side of it. How and where would I find / change the setting for the first system that stretches it so it shows it as is like my second system? TIA

Backup to External HDD
by Guest Buffalo- 14 replies
I have both Win98SE and Win2000 dual booting on one HDD. The Win2000 is NTSF and Wiu98SE is FAT32. Can I backup both on the same external HDD by doing it through Win2000? I don't believe I can do it through Win98SE as it can't see the Win2000 partition. How would I go about this? Do I have to partition the backup external HDD also in both formats and backup each OS separately? Thanks PS: The reason I am posting in this NG is because of the many smart people here that are willing to help. Buffalo

Hi, thanks for the suggestion from Gary, Jeff, Philo and Ben on how to restore my windows98 system after I deleted some operating files. I went to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm, and copied a floppy disk "windows 98SE, consume, no ramdrive". Then I inserted this disk into my computer, turned on the power, now the screen is: "non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike with any key when ready...." So the computer still can not read the bootdisk. The computer also does not respond to any letters, and F1-F112. The bootdisk does not work! What can I do now? Thanks, Mary

Killing the search suggestions on Google
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 14 replies
- 1.1k views
Lately when I type in a word or phrase to search for in google, these search suggestions pop up under my typing. I absolutely hate that feature. All it does is steal my focus of what I am typing. I want to block this feature in all browsers (IE and FF). I know that disabling java script works, but I dont want to do that because it interferes with other functions. Is it possible to block this, or do I need to just find a new search engine?

problems with re-set calendar, (pleh ! ! !)
by Guest kraine- 14 replies
- 1.2k views
Just bought this clunker laptop so my mom can run her nutrition program on it. THe program links to the calendar, and keeps track of what you eat every day. Unfortunately, the calendar for the system is messed up, and I don't have any discs or anything to fix it. I reset the date, then the next time I turn on the computer, it's a different time, and day. My guess is I have to download something (the clunker only has CD capability, no internet, no usb). Can anyone help me? I'd like to get this mailed out to my mom soon. Many many thanks, Kathy

I tried to install a SDHC card reader/writer (Targus TGR-SD20) on my w98se. The instructions state that the driver download software is w98 and ME compatible. It installed but does not open. This is my first venture into the land of SD cards so I have no idea as to the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
