Thunderbird Email Signatures
by Guest Casey- 2 replies
Seems to me in the past I knew how to add a signature to an outgoing Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 email. Guess I forgot how. Could someone please help me with this. How does one compose signatures and include them in the TB folder? How does one select a signature for inclusion in a message being composed? Does this feature require a TB add on? If so, what is the name/version number and D/L location? Thank you very much, Casey

I just installed Spybot Search & Destroy on my older win98 machine as I realized that I hadn't run a spyware scan in nearly 6 months, and found that Ad-Aware is no longer supported. Afterwards, I tried to open my hosts file. Instead of being presented with a dialog box asking me what program I wanted to use to open it, I got a dialog box saying something about SpyBot scanning the file. I had not thought it possible to assign a program to the hosts file because it lacks an extension. This leads me to another question. How do I fix it so that double-clicking on the shortcut on the desktop (or the actual file, but being in the windows folder, it's a pa…

AGP texture acceleration - Active or not ?
by Guest dave xnet- 9 replies

Hello, my old voodoo 3 2000 video card died, so I threw iin a Radeon vivo 7200 I had spare. In Windows 98, I'm running Catalyst 3.1 (Omega version). The driver seems to be running fine. I have a VIA MVP3 MB, the 4in1 is installed, and I updated the via cpu to agp bridge manually for good measure. In dxdiag, the AGP texture accelaration button is "greyed out" and is apparently "not available". However, in the ATI advanced settings/smartgart tab it shows AGP is operational at 1x. I installed 3dmark 2001 SE and it ran fine to completion. It confirms AGP is active at 1x, but dxdiag still has the greyed out button. What is the status of AGP on this…

Ensoniq Creative AudioPCI sound card autoexec.bat woes 1 2
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 27 replies
- 1.5k views
The driver package for this card installs an unwanted legacy audio device inside Device Manager. It also adds a "SET BLASTER" line inside autoexec.bat, which "cancels out" my own SET BLASTER line for my real SoundBlaster card. If I remove the unwanted SET BLASTER line, the legacy audio device simply adds it back in after a reboot. If I remove the legacy audio device from Device Manager (by removing it from my specific hardware configuration profile), what happens is that after any reboot, I find that my own specific SET BLASTER line gets removed! Now that the legacy audio device has been removed from my specific hardware configuration profile, how can I …

OT: Windows 95 INF looking for 8.3 folder name
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 4 replies

I recently tried installing Microsoft's Win95 Kernel Toys on my mother's Win95B box (so that I could use the keyboard remapper to render the Left Ctrl and Alt keys harmless). To do this, I copied the tools to a W95KernelToys folder on a floppy diskette and transferred them to her C: drive. However, when I r-clicked KEYREMAP.INF and selected Install, Win95 complained that it couldn't find the Keyremap files in the W95KernelToys folder. It turned out that Windows was expecting a folder name in 8.3 format. After typing W95Ker~1 into the search box, the installation completed successfully. BTW, the C: drive was not operating in compatibility mode, and Windows wasn't …

Unable to install USB driver
by Guest DaffyD®- 21 replies

My son was just given a Mp3 player which needs to have a Windows 98 USB driver installed. The problem is that Windows doesn't detect the driver on the install CD when running the Add Hardware wizard. What happens is that the driver setup program is installed, Windows builds a new driver information database, detects that it has found the Sunplus Multidisk disk and will search for a driver for it, but doesn't find one. I've tried the "Search for the best driver for your device" option, the "Display a list of all drivers" option, "Have Disk" and that all didn't work. Craig doesn't have a website so there are no FAQs. The player won't work with Windows if the d…

Re: Network printer won't print
by Guest MEB- 4 replies

Re: Network printer won't print If you could give a short explanation of what you tried/attempted as the fixes [via the VISTA group or otherwise] it might help us determine potential fixes. NOTE though, that VISTA was essentially designed NOT to network with 9X. So something's work like a charm, and others just seem to fail no matter what you do. Key though, is the SHARING, USER, and PASSWORD settings on the computers in addition to the normal firewall and other settings. It may be possible to obtain a generic printer port to USB adapter to temporarily or permanently connect the printer to the VISTA machine. Once done the printer could then be returned [if …

A hack, anyone, to turn on dma ? 1 2 3 4
by Guest Shadow- 85 replies

My samsung sh-182f DVD writer has become horribly slow, records at 1X max, even with 16X disks. I cannot turn DMA on in the hardware manager. Even my floppy drive has DMA ........ Must be a way. 6 hours hacking and nothing so far. TIA Apparently there is a registry/system entry that does not allow DMA on a drive, but cannot find it. Neither on PC or on Google. The drive had DMA a month ago, last time I checked.

I was just looking through the A/R list on Win98SE computer, noticing that I have a rather large list of Java Runtime Environment installs all the way from Java 2 v1.4.1_02 until Java 6 Update 4 (13 in total). Can I delete everything prior to Java 6 Update 4 or shall I retain Java 5.0 Update 14 along with Java 6 Update 4 as well. Thanks.

To whom it may concern, After an accidental shutdown of the Windows 98 machine I was using, no programs are listed under Start -> All Programs. I have been interacting with Microsoft Technical Support regarding potential solutions and have received some good tips, but nothing has solved the problem so far. I would like to hear from anyone who may have experienced and solved this problem. Thank you. Jean-Pierre P.S. I have verified the folder shows hidden files.

Approximately 800 vulnerabilities discovered in Anti-Virus products http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1445&tag=nl.e539 Seems the parsing issue has again been addressed as a potential area of vulnerability. "... the IT/Security consulting firm n.runs AG claims to have discovered approximately 800 vulnerabilities within antivirus products based on exploiting a standard malware scanning process known as "parsing" :" It isn't reasonable to shuffle this off with the standard "oh just another business pointing out others failures", *"The research they cite is based on Secunia's tracking of advisories affecting antivirus products, as well as research con…

I have a Dell XPS 420 desktop with Vista Ultimate with documents, pictures, mail, favorites, etc. that have been imported from Windows 98se. I can click on existing favorites and Links (that were imported), but I get an "unknown error" message when I try to place a new favorite or link into the list. Just can not figure out how to do it. Neither could Dell. I know they were imported correctly as it was done by a Microsoft MVP, and everything else seems to be working just fine. I posted this to Windows Vista group and no one answered. I called Dell and they wanted to go into my computer and change a lot of things around because he didn't recognize anything tha…

My jump drive works fine if I have it plugged into the USB port when I boot the computer. However, if I boot the computer without the drive plugged in, it won't recognize it when I do plug it in. I've tried to let the computer find it as new hardware, but it doesn't see it. Anyone got a fix for this one? Thanks
