I've got a sealed, original Win98 CD, manual, etc. I give up on WinXP, too slow, and more importantly lost features I liked in Win98. So, in abandoning WinXP and installing Win98.... Where do I get a complete set of the really necessary updates? Robert

How long will it last?
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 13 replies
I was recently reading posts on the msfn.org and read a few things that I thought this community might know about (maybe there are some people from here who go there also). The first thing was that Windows 98 SE will soon be "dead" to the internet. It will no longer be able to connect to newer websites that require a newer browser/flash player and shuch. And since IE7 cannot be installed on Windows 98, Windows 98 will soon be unable to be used for this purpose. Then there were unofficial service packs which apparently allowed for XP-only software to be installed on Windows 98 SE. (There's also a service pack called Revolutions Pack or RP for short…

Floppy Disk Drive
by Guest DaffyD®- 13 replies
I posted a question in the win98disks.general newsgroup about it being an appropriate forum to address floppy disk drive issues. Since the last post for that group was 12/6, I'd like to ask it here since this is a more active ng. I run Win 98SE, but the problem I have is with the installation of the drive itself. I've posted the issue in other ngs but have never gotten an answer which solved the problem. I've also googled for an answer but came up with nada. Is this an issue I could post here? Thanks. -- { : [|]=( DaffyD® If I knew where I was I'd be there now.

by Guest margie- 13 replies
I have just fitted the above to my elderly neighbours older computer because he needed a new keyboard and it had a usb connection and he did not have enough usb sockets. I bought a cheap Prostat 4 port usb hub 1.1 version which works well. The only problem is that when booting the computer windows 98SE wont boot up unless I disconnect the 4 port usb hub and then it is fine and I reconnect it and all is well. I was wondering do I need the 2.0 version or what can I do???? looking forward to hearing any suggestions. thanks -- margie

FAT32 size issues, _just_ about size?
by Guest StargateFan- 13 replies
Is the issue with FAT32 and Win9x, if I've understood the problem correctly, simply about the size of one directory, or is it also an issue of the size of the entire hdd. My reason for concern is, other hardware issues aside first, could we run Win9x on a large 200gig computer if it were partitioned into the 32gig (or whatever max size actually is) pieces? Or is the 200gig an issue right off the bat? Thanks.

DKabppls.exe
by Guest Rudy- 13 replies

This file in Windows/system (312KB) opens on startup (Win98 6.0). Strangely, I can't find any mention of it on GOOGLE or Microsoft Help. Is it a 'legit' program ? Do I need it ? Do I need it to run on startup ? The reason I'm asking is there are 2 'windows' that hang up this computer on shutdown and I get the warning window: "..stopped responding...WAIT ? END TASK?" but both have NO NAME at the top so I don't know what they are, where, or why they're running and often WAIT or END TASK won't get it done. Neither will CTL ALT DEL X2.. Then I have to power down to shut down which is not a good thing.. I ve pulled the list of Running Programs from CTL/…

How do I correct spelling in Company Name?
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 13 replies
- 1.3k views
Dyslexia strikes again! Soemwhere during installation of MS Office 2000 on my Win98SE, I misspelled my company name by inverting two letters. Went unoticed for eons. Now, after noticing this error and upon creating a file, I have to manually go to the new .xls, .doc, and ?? file, click on 'Properties' and correct the spelling. Sometimes forget. I don't want to reinstall anything, because everything is set up just the way I want it [except for spelling]. Is there some simple way to change the spelling that appears under 'company name'? next firewall test - Jetico 1 [last 98 version]
by Guest MEB- 13 replies
Thought the next firewall I would try would be Jetico. Seems to have been fairly highly rated, and apparently provides some additional 'features' which may be of use in the 9X environment [much more configurable rules than, say, Kerio, and supposedly rates higher than ZA]. A pre-test/installation was done for a basic 'feel' of the application, and the installation failed to allow Internet access. Haven't finished the background documentation/threads/web sites yet but: Prior to the actual test, I thought I might query for installation/setup pointers. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com _________

by Guest Turbguy- 13 replies

Try visiting nfl.com with process explorer running. Note that IE now uses 50%-100% of CPU resources after the page fully loads. Is your experience the same? What gives with this page??? Too busy with animations?? What can be done in IE to reduce the demands??

Win 98 Firefox Users Should Consider Opera 9.27
by Guest smith- 13 replies
- 1.1k views
Now that Firefox has dropped Win 98 support and any claim of being a multi-platform browser, Win 98 users should consider Opera. The new version, 9.50, is not stable, and I would not recommend it. However, the preceding stable version, 9.27, works fine, and I can recommend it. Opera 9.27 has file extensions for cache files, and you can easily work the cache with an ordinary file manager. They dropped the extensions 9.50 only to be met by a chorus of boos from users. See http://groups.google.com/group/opera.general/browse_thread/thread /ed7b283c48d2be3f/35dff7608561bf99?lnk=gst&q=cache#35dff7608561bf 99

too much memory?
by Guest C.D. Koger- 13 replies
To improve the sluggishness of WinXP I bought an AMD Athlon dual core machine with 2 Gb RAM and 512 Mb video and wanted to install a 98SE/XP dual boot system. 1th disappointment: swapping drives C and D isn't offered by the Award BIOS anymore, so I'll need a boot manager (I thought). But soon a new obstacle appeared: with 2048 Mb of RAM, the 98SE installer pertains there isn't enough memory to properly setup the O/S and suggests that I first remove the resident software to free some space! Is there a workaround for this? Cornelis Koger

Unable to access 2nd hard drive. Have tried: Simple boot floppy with ME dos on it, and same with 98SE dos on it at boot time. DriveImage 2002 with 98SE dos on it. XP w/SP2. WinME window environment. 98SE environment. Swapping drives in trays and using the unaccessible drive by itself. Swapping tray insertable locations. Jumpers adjusted accordingly. During floppy boot (both 98SE and ME), have observed the access LED on the tray indicating access to that ha…

Can't take a trick:Epsom CX5500 with win98SE
by Guest Jason James- 13 replies

Howdy I found an office supply place who also sold printers/scanner/copiers (allin one). They had spec sheets in frames for each, and I found more than one which could run on win98SE,..no earlier tho. Went to a larger electronics place which sold printers etc and selected an end of run Epsom CX5500 (2007 model). I set it up and tried the next USB port and error message "cant communicate with USBPRNT1). Checked Epsoms copy function and all OK. The thing appears to be working. Tried removing the new KB. reinstate the old one with the 1/4" circle plug/ This left the 2 USBs unused. Plugged Epsom into USB-1 reran the install CD, all OK, but when tried to…
