U-S Cert Vulnerability Advisories

I thought I would post the security advisories here for those of us using Internet Explorer since many of us dual-boot with Windows XP. It is nice that Mozilla Firefox vulnerabilities have been addressed with the newest version but it looks like it is time for Microsoft to have security updates with Internet Explorer. http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/bulletins/SB08-189.html Microsoft -- Internet Explorer Cross-domain vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 allows remote attackers to access restricted information from other domains via JavaScript that uses the Object data type for the value of a (1) location or (2) location.href property. unk…

Explorer
by Guest Jim- 5 replies

From time to time, that is not all that often, the Windows Explorer will "not responding" and then reset itself. This knocks off some of the running programs in the system tray. If I look at the Close Program Manager [ctrl+alt+del] these knockouts are usually still running. I know that I can reboot the machine to correct this problem however, is there a way to bring all this back up without rebooting? What is the cause...probably poorly writ third party software running in the background.

Glen,, I was at your site, but its got hammers and nails happening. My reason for the visit was regarding a file you have called 'runfix.zip' which restores the utility that updates the rb.cab files. I was hoping for maybe some print outlining what it does, or even if it is the utility that I was told about. Question.. when will your site be up and running?

Ithought I'd let you and the group know what ended up happening re getting a (2007 model) new CX5500 Epson printer/copier/scanner to get the printer to work on an win98se operating sys. Initially, I thought I had done the install properly,..and it's not difficult, the Epson CD is for install-dummies,...still the printer didnt work, the PC just chucked up an error message saying "cant see device" on USBPRNT1 (or close to that). Franc's USB program indicated the PC was aware an Epson had been installed, connected to USB 1. I tried different cables, checked all the files on C:, and there were about 10 of them. There were Epson Icons on the desk-top for its 3 fu…

by Guest Jason James- 13 replies

Howdy I found an office supply place who also sold printers/scanner/copiers (allin one). They had spec sheets in frames for each, and I found more than one which could run on win98SE,..no earlier tho. Went to a larger electronics place which sold printers etc and selected an end of run Epsom CX5500 (2007 model). I set it up and tried the next USB port and error message "cant communicate with USBPRNT1). Checked Epsoms copy function and all OK. The thing appears to be working. Tried removing the new KB. reinstate the old one with the 1/4" circle plug/ This left the 2 USBs unused. Plugged Epsom into USB-1 reran the install CD, all OK, but when tried to…

Return to 98 1 2

Greetings to the group from a new lurker here. Recently I acquired a laptop about 10 years old and the recovery disk with it installs good old 98 first edition. I have been a little startled at how slick 98 is. Of course the machine is designed for it with a 336 Mhz Celeron and 128 Mbyte RAM. I have been using it steadily for about a week now and it hasn't crashed, blown up, locked up or BSOD'ed on me once. In fact, so far it's as smooth and slick and steady as XP. I used 98 SE in its heyday but I am still impressed at how good it actually is. I have a couple of questions the knowledgeable folk here might be able to help me with. Is there a reasonably c…

Adobe dialog that won't go away
by Guest Larry- 3 replies

Sorry for asking an XP question here, but I couldn't find a newsgroup on XP. I have a five year old Dell laptop with Windows XP that someone gave me recently. Half the time, whenever you click or right-click on anything, a dialog appears saying, "configuring [or installing] Adobe 8.1." This dialog box just hangs, and you have to click it several times to get rid of it. I went to Add/Remove programs dialog box, and guess what? It's empty, none of the programs on the computer are showing at all. I went to the Adobe folder in the Program Files folder, thinking of simply deleting all the Adobe fiiles. There are two folders in it, one for version 7, and one f…

Wireless Access Windows 98SE
by Guest A Team- 12 replies

I'm trying to interconnect my desktop machine which is wired to a D-Link G604T Wireless Modem / Router, and a D-Link DWL-G630 Wireless CardBus Adapter in my Windows 98SE Tecra 8000 Laptop. The Tecra is unlikely to be able to support Win 2000, or better. The Tecra has successfully installed the card and can 'see' the network, but won't communicate (e-mail and IE) with the modem / router. The same card in another laptop equipped with XP worked fine after relatively straightforward setup, with WPA enabled. I can only get the Tecra to work with WEP enabled, and then it works fine. However, that means everything has to be WEP (rather than WPA). There is …

Information Security in General

I was amused by my us-cert email this morning about how Apple has patched numerous vulnerabilities on their operating system. So much for the argument that you always hear from Walt Mossberg's column in the Wall Street Journal about how great Apples are and how Walt thinks they are so superior to PC's. I have no big problem with Apple and I use an Ipod Mini which is nice for travel but I do not like how they bundle Quicktime with Itunes and then Quicktime continues to get hit with so many security vulnerabilities. I still like Mozilla Firefox because of its extensions and support for 256 bit AES encryption compared to IE 7 in Windows XP and maximum ciph…

IE 6 fails to start (wants to send error report)
by Guest Some Guy- 2 replies

On the system in question (win-98se, fully patched/updated - to the extent that it can be) IE was well behaved. I was away for a few days and a relative stayed at my house and was using the computer. At some point IE got screwed up. So right now when IE is launched, no IE window is created or started. Instead, some sort of error window comes up that says "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encounterd a problem and needs to close". There is a checkbox to restart IE, along with a couple of buttons (send error report, don't send report). The details of the report contains the following selected info: Error Signature: AppName: iexplore.exe modver:…

Hope this isn't OT, but where in the registry to I find the value that enables the popup window to set IE as the default browser if another browser has been installed? I think it's HLCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Internet Settings, the Default string. Is this right? If so, what would the value be set to? -- { : [|]=( DaffyD® If I knew where I was I'd be there now.
