OT - Windows 2K Defragger
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 13 replies

Somewhat off topic...... Windows 3.x thru Windows 98SE had the slowest defragger. I finally learned that I could install the DEFRAG.EXE from Windows ME. Finally there was one that worked fast. I just installed Windows 2000 on another computer. I see once again MS went back to the slow defragger. Not only that, but the older versions (Windows 3.x thru Win98se) showed the process in a graphic and showed the percentage completed. The one in 2K dont show anything except some colored bars, and I have no idea what percentage is completed. What a useless POS. Can I install the defragger from WinME in Win2K? (Note: I will not likely continue using Windo…

can I rip a CD as if it's one track using EAC?
by Guest brigstockedavid@yahoo.com- 13 replies

I've been ripping some classical CDs using Exact Audio Copy (I'm a beginner and most of its features are a mystery to me), and LAME. One problem is that some of these CDs have 'tracks' that aren't really separate tracks - the music is continuous, and the track number is really just a way of letting you get to that part of the symphony or whatever. EAC treats these as separate tracks, however, and the result is that a fraction of a second of the music is missing at the beginning of each track. It even sometimes misses a bit off the beginning of a track that really *is* a separate track. One solution would be to have it rip the whole CD as if it were one bi…

PDF reader
by Guest bobster- 13 replies

I have used Adobe Reader to read PDF files for many years through it's many different versions. It has always irritated me that it took so long to load it, and open a file in it, that I have sometimes avoided reading things because they were in PDF format and I didn't want the hassle of using Adobe Reader. It took forever to down load a multi-page file, and scrolling through the pages was laggy and jerky. I always attributed this to the fact that I was using Windows 98se and an old PII 300MHz processor. But today, on this forum, someone (sorry, can't remember who) mentioned that they used a free FoxIt PDF reader and that it was smaller and much faster than Ado…

It's been years since I've done this, forgot past data. I created a DUN, can dial up, but the save password entry is greyed out, so even after a sucessful connection, the next time I have to reenter data. In the network setup screen, I had selected Windows logon as IIRC I always did, but read in an old tip file that I need "Client for Microsoft Networks" to save the password. Advice? ms

98SE and Linux
by Guest Tony Yarwood- 13 replies

Hi guys Sorry to bother you all with this, but I thought I'd ask in my favourite n/g first :) Just about to buy a new box that's got enough oomph to do some dual booting. As I absolutely refuse to have anything to do with XP, I was wondering about 98SE and one of the Linux distributions probably Ubuntu. Has anybody experiences with dual booting 98 and Linux, or have any pointers to an apt website? My gut instinct tells me that 98 will probably have to go on the first partition followed by Linux, could be wrong tho. Many thanks in advance. Best regards Tony

help with Windows Protection Error
by Guest brucegooglegroups- 13 replies

I have receiving a Windows Protection Error when I start up for a few weeks. I was able to get the computer to function well for about a week by disabling all start-up programs, restarting, then reenabling the programs. The error disappeared. This didn't work the second time- today. I can't seem to get the computer to start normally. I can start in safe mode, and even when I try to start selectively, it automatically goes into safe mode. Normal startup doesn't work and involves too many startup programs. I have been working with msconfig. I disenabled some of the options in selective startup, like auto bat but when reenabled, the computer didn't start prop…

Clean Boot?
by Guest Jim- 13 replies

What is the importance of disabling the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat screens in msconfig.exe? Some computers will not start without Config.sys. Also, when creating a "clean environment" in Diagnostic selection for analysis the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat are enabled and the System.ini and Win.ini are disabled. Using step-by-step confirmation technique and not enabling the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat as part of the analysis. I recently performed this procedure when referring to kb891711 and the mouse behavior. tia

Fiesta I currently have the following Dual Boot set-up: 1-Two hard drives 2- Drive #1(Drive C) has Windows 98 installed 3- Drive #2 (Drive D) has Windows 2000 installed I would like to completely remove Windows 98 and make windows 2000 my only OS, bootable as Drive C on a single physical Hard Drive. I would then use the freed up drive for general storage. What must I do in order to accomplish this?

Putting XP on my 3rd harddrive
by Guest Jeepwolf- 12 replies
I presently have 2 hard drives partitioned into 6 partitions. I really do not like XP, but there seems to be a few newer programs that will not run on 98 anymore. I unplugged both of my hard drives abd installed XP on another blank hard drive. In order to use it, I have to unplug my Win98 drives and plug in the XP drive. What would happen if I plugged in the 3rd drive and initially booted to DOS (which I do anyhow). Could I just swap to this 3rd drive and start XP? (I have that drive as a FAT32). I dont know how to setup a dual boot, and it looks far too complicated to setup. Besides that, I do not want XP loaded at all, 95% of the time. I know I w…

Upgrading Win98 to Win2000
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 12 replies
- 870 views
Has anyone successfully upgraded Win98se to Windows 2000? If you did, were there any problems? I am considering this. Of course I'll test it out on a backup copy of my Win98 installation. I know the purists will say to start from a fresh installation, but there is now way I will even consider reinstalling 8 years of programs. If it dont work, I'll just stick with 98. -OR- The other option would be to install Win2000 as a dual boot. But if I was to do this, is is possible to import all the installed applications from Win98 without reinstalling all of them? thanks

SAFE mode with 1.5GB RAM
by Guest none- 12 replies
Recently installed 1.5GB ram in the laptop. Went to boot into SAFE mode last night and got the "windows cannot initialize, bla, bla, bla something about not enough memory". Well, 98Se works fine, just wanted to clean out some registry devices as the laptop has had numerous upgrades and I prefer not to have old HDDs listed, old CDROM/DVD etc. The SYSTEM.INI has the MaxPhysPage=40000 entry and tried lowering that to 20000 for safe mode but still Windows would not boot, so, is there any way to get 98 to boot to safe mode without physically removing a memory chip? Thanks Vic

Lost HDD space
by Guest G- 12 replies

Hi all; Recently I removed a couple of programs from my computer, one of them being "Yahoo Messeger" because I really didn't need further use of it and also needed the disk space, having a fairly old computer. After duly removing these programs I gained an additional 300MB, but lost it again immediately after defrag. I have cleared the history and temporary files folders to no avail; I run Win 98SE and everything seems to run well, but I would like my disk space back if possible. Kind Regards G

I have three files showing in my TEMP file that I cannot remove. They are: dfbeba.tmp 134KB df6346.tmp 134KB dff19a.tmp 394KB I believe that the three files are possibly hi-jack files. I was able to locate these files when I ran Easy Cleaner, but was unsuccessful in removing them from my system. Any instructions on how to rid my system of this what ever it is would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Frog

I just recently installed Win 98 SE - I previously had win 98 - I did so because I purchased a Wireless Lan PCI adapter and when i attempted to install I received a message that I needed Windows 98 SE - when I installed 98 SE - I attempted to install the Wireless Lan PCI adapter and again received the error that I needed to have 98 SE or newer version of windows installed on the computer - I checked the system properties and they list the operating system as Windows 98 Second Edition - I assume there is a system registry file that did not update and therefore that is likely preventing me from installing the Wireless Lan PCI adapter - does anybody know what…

BIG Problem

I installed the Unofficial Windows 98 patches. Now the computer does not go into Windows, not normal nor Safe Mode. I get a fatal exception error at 0187 (or (0167):BFF9E0BF. I can also sometimes see an error in VXD VWIN32(05). Can someone help me get the computer to work again? I couldn't reinstall Windows 98 from a CD either. Setup thinks (wrongly) that disk commpression is used. Thank you.

Bit Defender ate something??
by Guest Teflon- 12 replies

98SE on an older Thinkpad. Thought it was acting sluggish, ran the CA AV plus Spybot S&D, but nothing, so I decided to run Bit Defender's online scan. Somewhere during the scan, a message flashed on the screen, just got a glimpse of it, said it had found and eliminated a problem, did not get the name of what it had found or eliminated. Did not get any report or find any log of the scan's results. It was my error for not checking to see what the scan would do when it found something. Should have changed it to stop and ask questions, versus the default fix on the fly. Launched an app that has been running for years and got a message that the Unicows wra…
