Re: Microsoft Phasing Out Win98 !? I realy think they should supply us with a replacement as been as they are ending any support. Give us something we can use that you will support. Upload something too us or something. This PC came with XP, back when XP very first came out. I couldn't do a thing with all the bugs, so I put 98se on here just to get by. Well XP never sent CD's with anything so there was no way to ever re-add it later. Re: Microsoft Phasing Out Win98 !? I wish they'd send us XP or something to replace it. This PC came out with XP when XP was new and had all the bugs. I couldn't do a thing with it so I went back too 98se. Well seeing as how the system didn't come with an XP CD. there was no way to ever upgrade or re-install it. Kind of like a recall on a vehichle. Shouldn't thier be a replacement ? Maybe not everyone can afford it, if you live in UK or USA...you can make those £50 in a few hours but most of the people in Asia, Latin America and Africa must work really hard for entire weeks to get JUST £50...that's a lot of money down here.

Opera 9.5 Note
by Guest smith- 0 replies

98 Opera Users considering an upgrade should note the posts and problems at http://my.opera.com/community/forums/forum.dml?id=26 Users should keep their earlier system intact, as many people have found the upgrade unusable. 9.50 looks like a respository of lessons on how not to do an upgrade. If you upgrade and upgrade your mail, you can't go back, unless you have a backup, but then you could lose interim mail.

Avast and AVG for Windows
by Guest Dan- 2 replies

I removed AVG and went with Avast antivirus and it is working well. The last I heard that AVG 7.5 will be ending in a few days and version 8 is not compatible with Windows 98 Second Edition. I tried version 8 on my computer on the Windows XP Pro. side of my multi-boot computer and it was terrible because it flagged things that were not a problem and just related to SpywareBlaster which had protected against the baddies and AVG 8 removed the protection for 197 items. My dad tried it on his computer and it flagged a legitimate file as a trojan. He is also now using Avast. I am also giving Ubantu Linux a try on my computer a try within the XP Pro. side…

Slow Down the CPU Speed
by Guest Brad- 7 replies
Hi, I have two WinBook XL2 laptops with Windows 98se. Most of the time, I use them off line (off the Web) and I don't need the CPU running at full speed (400Mhz). The problem is the noisy fan that cools the CPU. This fan is not defective since it is noisy on both laptops and it runs constantly after a warm up period. I could not find anything in "Setup" or the manual that allows you to reduce the CPU speed. Is there a utility that would allow me to slow down the CPU, thus reducing the heat up so the fan doesn't constantly run? Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your password, credit card number, etc., be sure…

strange!?
by Guest Jim- 7 replies

Today I deleted a collection of old flagged "corrupted files" folder after checking these files at all those lovely websites like VirusTotal etc.. Since this was on the desktop before deletion, a hole in the icon set was present and I rearranged them by type. Suddenly, a folder pops up in the place of the old "corrupted file" folder called [Application Data]. This is the one you find in Windows and also in Profiles of User under Windows with multiple users. Why would a copy of this folder show up on the desktop? None of these files that were deleted would have an impact on this except possibly; awswax.ocx which is replaceable. I know that if I import a file t…

Question re USB features on win98se PC
by Guest Jason James- 22 replies

I have just one more question re the USB facilities on my 98se PC. After I successfully plugged a new KB into 1 of 2 USB ports on the rear panel, (initially I thought there was only one) I was looking at some cheap printer/scanners etc for $69. But like all peripherals these days they are USB. I understand that a converter adapter may get me back into the parallel port,..but before that decision I had a look at "System Properties" then "Device manager" then opened 3 headings under "USB Controllers" 1st Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USBUniversal Host Controller (exists in all hardware profiles) 2nd USB Composite Device (exists in all hardware profiles) 3rd U…

Slightly OT - W98 or NT? 1 2
by Guest Peter in New Zealand- 25 replies

My apologies for the OT post, but I am curious to ask an opinion on this. The machine I have originally came with your choice of 98 or NT4 on it. I have 98SE running pretty well thanks to the support and experience of this group. A friend of mine has a full install CD for NT4 Workstation he hasn't used for years and he is happy to gift it to me if I want it. Apart from the fact that NT groups on the Internet are fairly quiet now-a-days I think am more likely to get an unbiased opinion here I think from anyone who has used it. I don't use the machine for games - I run MS Office 97, and use Firefox and Thunderbird. I would gain stability from switching to…

Used computer, W98 A CRT-type monitor that came with it showed pink background color in desktop, screens, etc. I needed to quickly compare another monitor so did not go into W98 Display Properties to reset colors to my preference. But when I connected my usual monitor to this (new) computer, it displays normal (for me) colors. Question: Display colors are set in the OS AFAIK. I've seen some monitor problems in past, is this a monitor problem, or otherwise what is going on? ms

I have some files of music that I can't play because I originated them in Real Player, which I don't have anymore. (I only have Windows Media Player). I also have music that has the extension .rax. Can I change that to open with the Windows Media Player? Please give specific directions. I have Windows 98se with 4GB left, on Dell xps t450. I would rather not download any new player, especially not Real Player. Thanks.

Win98 upgrade to SE 1 2

I have an old Win98 computer that doesn't have internet access, and i need to transfer files from it to a newer computer. Trying to use a flash drive for it, but the flash drive manufacturer requires download of drivers to use it with SE, and it can't be used for earlier versions of Windows. Any suggestions on (1) transferring the files; (2) making the flash drive usable? Thanks.
