Wireless Access Windows 98SE
by Guest A Team- 12 replies

I'm trying to interconnect my desktop machine which is wired to a D-Link G604T Wireless Modem / Router, and a D-Link DWL-G630 Wireless CardBus Adapter in my Windows 98SE Tecra 8000 Laptop. The Tecra is unlikely to be able to support Win 2000, or better. The Tecra has successfully installed the card and can 'see' the network, but won't communicate (e-mail and IE) with the modem / router. The same card in another laptop equipped with XP worked fine after relatively straightforward setup, with WPA enabled. I can only get the Tecra to work with WEP enabled, and then it works fine. However, that means everything has to be WEP (rather than WPA). There is …

Folder double-click or Open doesn't do anything
by Guest dave xnet- 12 replies

Some of the folders have this odd behavior while others are working normally. If I attempt to open (right click/Open) or double click, nothing happens. However, if I right click/explore, it operates normally and the explore window opens displaying the contents. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, Dave

Error on page.
by Guest webster72n- 12 replies

When opening Sports in Yahoo, or any of its related categories, the pages come up, but with errors. The message is: "Error on page", w/o. quotation marks. How does this happen and is there a way to fix this? Supposedly it is a registry problem, but in order to avoid disaster, I need to know the exact nature and procedure to eliminate the culprit(s). Doe Win98 and WinME respond in the same way? <H>.

DVD burner with Win98FE?
by Guest Dee- 12 replies
I always assumed I couldn't install a DVD burner on my Win98 First Edition machine because every burner I looked at in stores "required" Win98 Second Edition. Then it occurred to me that maybe it's just the bundled software that required SE and it was not some limitation inherent in FE that wouldn't allow a burner to work. So is it true that I could install a burner and use some free software, such as DeepBurner or Express Burn, that works with Win98FE? Thanks, Dee

Glen,, I was at your site, but its got hammers and nails happening. My reason for the visit was regarding a file you have called 'runfix.zip' which restores the utility that updates the rb.cab files. I was hoping for maybe some print outlining what it does, or even if it is the utility that I was told about. Question.. when will your site be up and running?

IDE Controller problem?
by Guest McDermotts- 12 replies

Just recently started using this old computer since other one broke. All works ok, but seems rather sluggish. I find under device manager. hard disk controllers it lists "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller". Under that it lists "Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)" and there is a yellow circle with the exclamation point inside. Under that it lists "Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)" and no warning indicator. I tried removing the IDE Controller listing, then restarting. It says the current drivers are the best. The yellow warning comes rigfht back, also. Thanks for any help/info, Todd McD

Windows 98 CD - which was the last one released?
by Guest cccdddrrr@hotmail.co.uk- 12 replies
- 597 views
Briefly, I bought Win95 CD and found I got the final release (OEM Service Release 2.5). I thought that was useful - to get the final release. I'd like to buy Win98. When looking on places like ebay, how can I tell which is the final version - by squinting at the blurry photos sellers upload? It's interesting - reading wikipedia they say win95 had quite a few releases, but win98 only had 2. Is this correct?! Also, does Win98 (SE version) greatly benefit from applying MS patches, strictly in terms of stability or useful additional functionality, and not in terms of security. (I am not interested in applying security patches to Win98 because I'll never c…

batch commands work in Win XP but not 98
by Guest eganders- 12 replies

Why do the following commands result in garbage stored in tractest.txt for Windows 98, but puts the date and time headings into the file "tracetest.txt" for Windows XP as I want? Can these statements be changed in some way so that the date and time are stored in the file properly? date >> tracetest.txt < nul time >> tracetest.txt < nul I have a batch file that puts the date and time in the header of a section of a file prior to running a test. I need to identify the date and time that the test is run. Each time the test is run, the date and time are placed in the file and the test and the results are stored in the file appended to the r…

Network with Win98 and WinXP
by Guest Rosivaldo Fernandes Alves- 12 replies

I have an old computer with Win98 installed and a new computer with WinXP installed? How can I safely put both to work together in a home network? I'm afraid of allowing the Win98 to access the internet, since it doesn't have automatic update from Microsoft, so it may have security holes that will never be closed. How can I solve these questions? Thanks in advance. Rosivaldo.

Installing a wireless card
by Guest zallan@gmail.com- 12 replies

Hi - I am helping a friend with a small problem, and I would appreciate some help. He has an older Sony VAIO laptop and we are trying to install an SMC PCMCIA card so that he can join a wireless network. When we insert the card, Windows pops up and asks for a driver for a newly discovered "PCI Network Controller". Pointing Windows to the driver for the card does not work (eg. it does not think this is the driver it is looking for). I have long since stopped using W98, but I seem to remember having to deal with this or a similar problem before, but the solution is escaping me. For some reason, I suspect that the missing PCI Network Controller Driver is a Win…

Windows Protection Error Again!
by Guest Satish Gupta- 12 replies

I posted this problem a few weeks ago and got it resolved, but it has resurfaced. A few facts are different this time. SAME AS THE LAST TIME: I have Windows 98 Second edition. I made no changes to my computer in the recent past. All of the sudden, when I boot up I get this message "Windows Protection Error." It suggests that I open in safe mode. I am able to do that. What do I have to do to get rid of this problem and start using my computer in the normal mode? NEW FACTS Bootlog.txt shows the following errors this time. Load Failed: ndis2sup.vxd initfailure: esdi_506.pdr initcompletefailed = sdvxd dynamicload failed: nuwav.dre : File not found …

Hard drive needs later OS?
by Guest mm- 12 replies
Hi, I have win98SE and went shopping for a new hard drive a couple days ago. Some said on the box that they needed Win2000 SP3 and some said they needed winxp. A friend says this isn't quite true. They only need these so that I can see the whole disk. Is this true? I think it might be because right now I think I have a 75Gig disk in my computer and using FAT 32, I think I can only see 48.8gig of it. But that's fine if I can only see 48.8 of some hard disk. I don't store videos or many picture files, and when I finally get XP or something, I can put the same HD in that system, see everythign I've got now, and have room for more. Is there a good re…

What to do with an ISO download
by Guest jamest1938@invalid.com- 11 replies
- 576 views
I began downloading a .ISO file, but I stopped it. I know this is a CD image file, but I do not burn CDs. I do not use CDs at all except those that come from a factory with data on them. I would not have the faintest idea how to even begin to burn a CD, and in all honesty, I do not care to learn how. CDs make good drink coasters and thats about all they are good for. I'm old, I use my computer to go online and edit my digital photos, and do some basic home office stuff. That's all. I'll leave the burning CDs to the young people who waste their entire lives in front of a computer screen. I have an actual life, and the computer is less than one percent of…

I was just looking through the A/R list on Win98SE computer, noticing that I have a rather large list of Java Runtime Environment installs all the way from Java 2 v1.4.1_02 until Java 6 Update 4 (13 in total). Can I delete everything prior to Java 6 Update 4 or shall I retain Java 5.0 Update 14 along with Java 6 Update 4 as well. Thanks.

Choppy video
by Guest bobster- 11 replies
- 1.4k views
My Granddaughter sends me videos on MySpace and YouTube and they appear broken up and choppy, both the video and audio. Since I have a broadband (4-5 meg) cable connection, I'm sure the problem is not limited by my ISP. I think it might be my computer. Should I be able to get smooth video performance on my old dog or is it incapable because of its limitations. Here are its specs: P11 300 MHz processor 324 megs of ram 32 meg video card Windows 98SE Some videos play reasonably smoothly, while others, like above, do not. Is there something that I could do to improve my video performance or should I just give in and buy a new XP or Vista computer?

Hi, Friends, I need your guys' help urgently. I am still using Window 98 for my Pen III desktop. Yesterday I misktakenly deleted the system files ( I am not good at computer). These deleted files are in the recycle bin because I did not empty the recycle bin. When I restarted the computer, the only information in the screen is :"invalid system disk. Please replace the system disk, then press any key to start...". Can not get into safe mode. Does not response to any keys or F1-F12, or alt+ctrl+del". I do have a Recovery CD when I bought the computer almost 9 years ago. The options are: Diskette backup, user backup, user restore and factory restore. …
