ADSL slower on Win98SE than on Win2K?
by Guest Igor- 11 replies
I recently installed Windows 2000 (with SP4) on my PC in a dual-boot configuration with Windows 98SE. I have an ADSL high-speed Internet connection with promised speeds of "up to 5 Mb/s." I have found, using online speed tests, that the speed rarely goes above 650 Kb/s under Windows 98SE. With everything else but the OS being identical (e.g. hardware, browsers, etc.), I can regularly attain speeds of over 3000 Kb/s under Windows 2000. I'm trying to figure out if this is a limitation of Windows 98SE, or if this issue is particular to my setup. Anyone else experience this? -- "When the words of freedom are used to destroy freedom, it's time for a revolutio…

When I try to install certain software (games) from a CD, I get a message saying some installation support files are missing. If I copy the entire CD to a new folder on the hard drive and install from there, it works fine. Anyone know what files are missing? Thanks..

No use cause a power supply to fail?
by Guest ms- 11 replies
Question arises due to keeping a spare computer, not normally used. I sometimes acquire a used computer at a garage sale. Sometimes a person says "it works, but I haven't used it in a year". They are free. Recently from my dentist's office, where they know they will see me again. I get them home, apply power, some have a dead power supply, where past history is not used for a long time. I know tube radios need to be used or they are dead. Cars need to be run or eventually batteries go dead. Etc. Can the typical computer power supply die from not being used? If so, assume booting up monthly should be enough? ms

PC 98 Modem on W2K?
by Guest W. Watson- 11 replies
I may find this out soon enough, but I bought an older PC with a modem in it. I replaced the w98 on it with W2K I had no idea what it was yesterday, when I tried firing up a standard modem. No luck. I opened up the PC and found it had a 3Com USR 56K DFVJ CPCI PC98. The PC98 designation got my attention. Maybe it won't run under W2K? Music skips
by Guest Stan- 11 replies
I posted this on windowsmedia.player board but don't know if I'll get an answer there. So if you don't mind I'll try here. Ten year old Gateway comp. but works fine. Win 98SE, Plll 500 mHz, 256 RAM, Windows managed Swap,WMP 9. CD ROM plays a music CD fine. When I "Copy from CD" to Media Library I notice no skips but when I play from Media Library every song has at least several skips and not just at the end of the track. I'll add here that I had these same CD's in WMP9 about a year ago (had to reformat) and they played fine then. I recently had to change the CD ROM and had to put in and older, used one; it's only Quad speed. Any ideas for a cure for …

The mystery of the PCChips M572 motherboard connector for add-on USB "card"
by Guest thanatoid- 11 replies
Hi gang, I want to connect a Belkin 2xUSB port "card" to my PCChips M572 motherboard. The motherboard has a twin USB connector which has 2 rows of 9 pins, with one of the 18 pins missing. I have the manual, and the first two pins, facing back of computer, are marked 1 and 2. On the motherboard, /of course/, they're marked 2 and 1. But I don't think it matters, since I am pretty sure both rows are the same. The one "blank" pin is irrelevant, since it is where the S-Gnd connects, which I believe doesn't matter since 3 of the 4 configs in the Belkin manual do not even use that 5th pin. The Belkin card has 2 5-pin connectors and a very comprehensi…

Quicktime problems with Firefox and Win98
by Guest * * Chas- 11 replies

I have a very stable fully updated Win98 system that I've been running since 1999. Several years ago I had to update IE from 5.5 to 6 to access some online services that I use. IE 5.5 worked perfect for years. IE6 had a bunch of annoying little glitches such as printing problems so I installed Firefox and it's worked great for several years. After one of the frequent Firefox updates I now get a QuickTime broken link icon for most videos in Firefox: YouTube for example plus the startup and instructional videos in many web sites. I'm running Firefox 3.0.0.11. I've reinstalled QuickTime and all of the Adobe Flash & Shockwave updates still no joy. Quick…

I have an old system, a VIA P4PB400-FL motherboard, and have the CD that came with it. But that CD only has audio drivers, no USB drivers. I do not know how that problem was initially solved ages ago. I am trying to re-install from scratch (new, larger HD), and all works except in the device manager, i get a ? with USB controller device associated with this wonderful icon. Trying properties, install driver, i get text it is looking for USBECHI.SYS from disk "Windows9X USB 2.0(ECHI) Driver Disk for VIA". The Win98 CD, the VIA CD, and other 3rd party CDs all fail to satisfy this. Help???

Accessing C drive in DOS
by Guest ms- 11 replies
P 120. It has a low density floppy drive which I need temporarily for some work. Initially, seems to have no OS. In the initial POST screen, the hard drive is listed. In BIOS, I went to Autodetect and let it run to be sure, rebooted, the POST display was unchanged, The hard drive appears to look normal there. I put in a DOS 6.2 boot disk, it goes to an A prompt. But changing to C: gives error message "invalid drive specification". If the drive shows up in POST, what results in error message? ms

Extracting photos from .AVI videos (win98)
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 11 replies
- 856 views
My digital camera makes short one minute .AVI videos. I often record the full minute, then hit the button to get another minute. I'd like to find software to paste the two pieces together, and maybe edit out some frames. In the least, I'd like to make still photos from individual frames. Does anyone know of any software I can download to do any of this? Must be for Win98. Freeware preferred if possible, excessively bloated software not needed, just something simple. Thanks for all advice

Making easier use of the registry
by Guest mm- 11 replies
Is there an easier way to manipulate the registry than I've been led to believe. In particular, I have start up programs that I' not using now but may use next month. Their presence slows down startup (on my old slow laptop that I just bought second-hand) Rather than export and later have to import, I thought I could modify t he value by putting soething in front of the program name. In JCL for mainframes, IEFBR14 was a program that did nothing. Is there anything like that for PCs. For example, I have two wireless modems, each with its own software, one for public hot spots, and a new one I had to buy for hotspots that require a password. Level b vs…

Just replaced the cmos battery, but still get this message, (and the clock/date still doesn't work properly, I really need it to). "Calendar can't find one or more of the files it needs to run. Run the calendar set up program again to install the missing files..." my problem: I don't have any discs with the laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT (PA1230U-T2C). It runs WIn98 (don't have that disk either). The laptop also doesn't have internet. I would download something on my good laptop to CD, then run it on the TOshiba. But not sure how do to this? and what to download? Any help is GREATLY and gratefully appreciated, you guys are terrific! -Kat…

98 SE; system purchased in '99' Started "Old Faithful" tonight and it won't even run the POST. Least not all of it. I get to a screen that detects the mouse, keyboard and cd-rom and proper amt. of RAM. Or is that all the POST? That's as far as it goes. It just stays on that screen. Does not respond to system setup key; startup floppy never starts. Any thoughts? Thanks

Free avg spyware.
by Guest Greg Rozelle- 11 replies
I am a little confused. Didn't they make a free avg spyware program for windows 98? I look at their system requirement. It did not say windows 2000/NT or Xp. It just gave the very minimum requirements and did not list the operating system. What did they stop support for windows 98 spyware? (I do not like XP or Vista) I also notice http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Spyware/3000-8022_4-10610898.html That on this page it list 98. So for it to work, you must use the paid version. Am I correct? I just hope a don't have to go back using f-prot for dos for my virus protection. That would suck. Greg Rozelle

Starting applications automatically in safe mode
by Guest Frank- 11 replies

I need to start a logger application under Windows98 when the system is started in safe mode. I know that I have to use the registry key HKLOCALMACHINE\System \CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot but I don't know what to add. Perhaps a new Key under Minimal and Network keys with the name of the application? And so, where is the information about which program to launch? I need to launch a program .EXE in a specific folder. I tried with win.ini on [bOOT] section, keys run= and load= without any result. I tried also to prefix with a * the key that starts the application when OS is started in normal mode under HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentV…

Posted this over on Velocity but got no response! Have been chasing this problem for some time. Found an old Win note that indicates it might be a memory problem. Have reduced the amount of useable memory from 312 meg to 64 meg to try. Any one have any more info on this problem? Would appreciate any suggestions as to what to try. Thanks
