I have a Compaq Prosignia 165 laptop. It was designed for Windows 98, so I assume it was built in 98 to 00. I finally found an online manual for it. It has a thing on the rear that is called an infrared module. It fails to explain what it's for. Can someone please tell me the purpose to this thing. Thanks

Backup, Image, Clone, Ghost????
by Guest Teflon- 7 replies

OK, I can't believe it, but I finally have Win98SE installed and running / looking exactly the way I want. Now, before I mess something up, I'd like to make a ???? of the whole thing so that if I, or something else, throws a monkey wrench in the works, I can just Reformat C:\, copy this ???? to C:\, reboot and all is just as it was when I created the ????. Sorry for the ????'s, but I am a little confused about what you call the ???? I'm after. Lots of threads - lots of conflicting use of the various terms and terminology. I have used Win98SE's native Backup facility to back up C:\, but I assume this only backed up the data, and not the System info. I do …

I tried to install a SDHC card reader/writer (Targus TGR-SD20) on my w98se. The instructions state that the driver download software is w98 and ME compatible. It installed but does not open. This is my first venture into the land of SD cards so I have no idea as to the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: network When posting the same question to more than one group, please use proper cross-posting techniques. http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=cross-posting I have properly cross-posted this to the Win98.Gen_Discussion group. hat are your real-world needs? Because in order to view and access shares on the Win98 machine from the Vista machine, nothing much in particular should need to be done. Just your "basic" network setup should take care of everything. But if you want to access shares on the Vista machine from the 98 machine, it's a royal mess with several likely issues to deal with, the first…

Can you use a Win98 PC with dedicated printer attached as a print server for Vista laptop ? I can set up my printer to share over network and Vista laptop sees printer on network but Vista won't connect. Do I have to declare this legacy print server a Win 98SE machine somehow ? Probably more a Vista question and I have posted but thought someone must have experience in trying this.

No IRQ for graphic card in Windows 95
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 14 replies

I have two 486/586 machines running Win95B. One has a Cirrus Logic VLB graphics card based on a CL-GD5428 chipset, the other has an S3 Trio V64+ PCI card. The latter card has a 2-pin interrupt header which I have jumpered, and I have also enabled "assign IRQ to VGA" in the BIOS setup. Neither machine assigns an IRQ to its graphics card. It appears that these cards are polled, much like standard (non-EPP/ECP) parallel printer ports which also don't get an IRQ in Device Manager. OTOH, my Win 98SE box does assign an IRQ to its PCI card (Diamond Stealth III S540). Is this normal behaviour? FWIW, both motherboards have UMC chipsets. - Franc Zabkar -- Please…

I have worked with many others in the industry and can confidently say that DNS Pollution will not hurt Windows 98 Second Edition. I can go into further details later if anyone even cares. Have a nice weekend.

Recent version of Flash needs SSE capable CPU ?
by Guest dave xnet- 2 replies

There's a lot of reports in the Adobe Flash player forums of crashes. It's occurring on those using older CPU's and a consensus seems to have been derived between the posters that indeed, SSE instructions have been hard coded into the player with no regard in the code as to whether they are supported or not. One thing that is conspicuous is the complete lack of any comment on the subject amongst the various posting by any Adobe rep. while they, in general, do make appearances and have commented freely on some of the other topics. Did Adobe just sneak it in with out making any announcement or updating the Flash minimum requirements ? The whole thing seems …

by Guest margie- 13 replies

I have just fitted the above to my elderly neighbours older computer because he needed a new keyboard and it had a usb connection and he did not have enough usb sockets. I bought a cheap Prostat 4 port usb hub 1.1 version which works well. The only problem is that when booting the computer windows 98SE wont boot up unless I disconnect the 4 port usb hub and then it is fine and I reconnect it and all is well. I was wondering do I need the 2.0 version or what can I do???? looking forward to hearing any suggestions. thanks -- margie

Web Video Slowdowns
by Guest Dan- 0 replies

Apparently, there have been reports of web video slowdowns. I recently experienced this on my Nintendo Wii Game System last night and noticed how a video was playing and then stopping. My dad, Ivan in New Mexico also has Comcast cable. This was via a wireless connection so I did not think much about it. I noticed it again today on my computer here with both Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.16 as well as Internet Explorer 6 and then contacted Comcast Cable. I talked with the technician and he had me update flash which helped but it was still slow. However, the slowdown was on the Tree Man video in Yahoo.com and I have read about reports about slowdowns on CNN as…
