Remove Real Player 4
by Guest CdLSRN- 11 replies

In an effort to make more disc space on this computer, I removed Real Player. I also seem to have Real Player 4 installed. I tried to remove it and at 33% I got the message Could not delete file C:\windows\SYSTEM\decdnet.dll. So I searched for it in Explorer and deleted it manually. I then got an immediate similar error about another file. I was in a clean boot. It said these files were being used by another open program. I had no open programs except explorer and add/remove. How can I remove Real Player 4. My machine is a Dell XPS T450, desktop. Total size 12.7 GB - 3.7GB free space. The program I am trying to run makes CD labels. It is an old program and I did…

"Port already open" problem
by Guest Donald G. Davis- 11 replies

I've installed Win98SE on an HP Pavilion A656X computer, ASUS A7V8X-LA (Kelut) motherboard. I have an external serial Diamond Supra 56e Pro modem on the onboard COM1 socket. I use it in both DOS and Windows. Here is the problem, which I've never had with my previous ISA modems: The modem works properly under raw MS-DOS or in a Windows DOS session, using the Qmodem terminal program. The modem works properly with a Windows DUN connection if it has not been used under Qmodem in a DOS session in Windows before starting DUN. But if Qmodem has been run and exited before I then attempt to connect in Windows via DUN, the DUN window pops up a…

Open With from a command line
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 11 replies
- 1.1k views
In Explorer, highlighting a particular file and r-clicking it while holding down the Shift key brings up a context menu with an "Open with" option. Is there any way I can automate this via a single command line? I'm thinking of something like this ... some_command.exe /option_1 ... /option_n %1 .... where %1 is the file I wish to open. Would rundll32.exe or explorer.exe have appropriate command line options? - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

Frequent System crashes, SLOW - iCCP:CRC error ?
by Guest John D- 11 replies

My wife has an old Dell Intel x86 system, Windows 98, 2nd edition version 4.10.2222A, 128MB RAM. Admittedly this is an almost extinct dinosaur, but it does what my wife needs to do. She's a prolific writer, but very, very few pieces longer than 5 pages in Word (articles). And she does lots of email with Outlook Express. Her applications just don't apply much pressure on the system. Over the past month she's had frequent "crashes" - I haven't observed a lot of them but I think it isn't the blue screen of death - I think the application crashes. It can be Word, Outlook Express. It sometimes takes "5 minutes" (perhaps a slight exageration) for a Word docum…

Approximately 800 vulnerabilities discovered in Anti-Virus products http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1445&tag=nl.e539 Seems the parsing issue has again been addressed as a potential area of vulnerability. "... the IT/Security consulting firm n.runs AG claims to have discovered approximately 800 vulnerabilities within antivirus products based on exploiting a standard malware scanning process known as "parsing" :" It isn't reasonable to shuffle this off with the standard "oh just another business pointing out others failures", *"The research they cite is based on Secunia's tracking of advisories affecting antivirus products, as well as research con…

Poor man's tab browsing with IE6
by Guest bobster- 10 replies
I've tried several IE based browsers with tabbed browsing and for various reasons haven't liked them. I have been using what I call a poor man's tabbed IE6 browsing by opening multiple windows that I can selectively open from the bottom of the main page. This works fine except it takes a long time to set it up after each re-boot. My question: Is there a way that I can open a list of several web sites at boot? I know I can open any number of programs by just adding them to my start menu but I haven't found a way to open specific web sites at boot time. Am I missing something simple here or is this not possible with IE6? Thanks in advance

Windows Live - no more Outlook Express
by Guest MEB- 10 replies

Just received notice that there is a new client needed soon to access Hotmail and Live accounts, which apparently only supports XP and Vista. The reason: Microsoft has created another proprietary protocol DeltaSynch to replace its previous proprietary protocol DAV. Someone tell me why users should install ANOTHER Microsoft problematic creation? Another brilliantly stupid idea from Microsoft. So what do others think about this... -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com -- _________ -- Posted via http://computerhelpforums.net Forum to USENET Gateway

Available memory after start-up
by Guest Graham C- 10 replies
Not really a problem, but an observation. I run TClock which apart from the date and time in the system tray has been configured to show 'available RAM' For a couple of years I've noticed big variations in the amount of free memory available immediately after boot-up. Hence I've just disabled every thing except TClock via MSCONFIG I have 448 Meg of physical RAM. If I clean boot the PC say ten times in a row, then after start-up, approximately: On about six occasions I have 304 Meg of free memory available On about three occasions I have 264 Meg of free memory On one occasion I have 230 Meg of free memory This is 'repeatable', but it seems random…

IPHLPAP.DLL PROBLEM
by Guest DashDotDash- 10 replies

I am running windows 98. I use a Photo Editor - Benq S2W4300U/3300u scanner. First I received the message to alter the colour settings! Then up came the message 'The IPHLPAP.DLL can not start. I no longer have a Photo Scanner or Scan button. I then began to see 'return arrows' on my desktop files! I run avg = no virus's found. I run Zone alarm and spybot. Spybot scans always drag up problems. The system has slowed to a dawdle even in simple tasks. I have looked to see other postings; one reply stated - uninstall AOL9 and revert to AOL8 - What does that mean? I do not understand that lingo. Can anyone assist me. Please.

Windows 7, why would you buy VISTA

Well, that didn't take very long did it. Word is that Microsoft MAY release Windows 7 early, apparently making VISTA a VERY poor choice for potential upgraders. Yep, dig in your pocket again for the very newest Microsoft glamour OS... and don't forget to buy all new peripherals and software AGAIN.... http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1120 -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com _________
