Hello, I have 2 separate WD 80GB hard drives, each partitioned once installed in my PC. Both have Windows98 SE installed. Can I have a menu come up on starting up my PC to pick which drive I want to boot to? If I can do this, which file do I have to update and what do I write? The first drive is C & the second drive is D. Thank you!

How do you update Windows 98? 1 2

On this Microsoft webpage - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239937/kb/239937 It tells me about the availability of "Microsoft Windows 98 Customer Service Pack". I am assuming that this is a big all-in-one update to Windows 98, which is what I am after. In the above-mentioned article, it says - Windows 98 Customer Service Pack is available for download from the Windows Update Web site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ The problem I am having at the moment is that if I go to the above webpage (using my XP-based PC), I get automatically redirected to - http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us This appears to be …

Brian Livingston wrote one of the first and best series of Windows books beginning with Windows 95 Secrets in 1995. Since introduction of XP, he has consistently pooh-poohed Windows 98 users who have refused to switch and who cite the speed and reliability of it and the lack of worry that some critical MS download tonight will break their mission critical application tomorrow. In their latest newsletter Scott Dunn writes: But like a fabled perpetual motion machine, XP keeps on going and going -- and if you follow some simple guidelines, the OS will keep running in top condition until Vista's successor is ready in 2010. XP is an operating syst…

Cannot shut down Windows 98
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 22 replies
I have installed Windows 98SE on a Supermicro P6SBU motherboard. When I go to shut down windows, the screen displays the usual "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message (I can't remember the exact wording), but the PC's power remains on. If I then turn off the PSU power button, the PC momentarily makes a squeeking sound as if I have stepped on a small rodent, then all is quiet and the PC finally stops. Ideally, I would like the power to the PC stopped when I shut down windows using the usual Start button / Shut down method. Any thoughts please? Thank you, best regards, Robert.

How do I print 100+ .doc from a SINGLE request? sorry for wronggroup
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 17 replies

On one machine, running Win98 and MS Office 97 on another machine, running WinXP and MS Office 2003 using either machine, every now and then I need to print a 'folder' of documents Is there an easy way to set up for a SINGLE print statement to print all 100+ of these. I've historically clicked to open each one, then print each one, but when there's this many that gets a bit tedious. Sorry, for the wrong group, but I figure you guys know how to do this. Robert

by Guest James- 33 replies

Hello, I am trying to fix my dad's computer for him. He is running Windows 98 SE on an IDE WD 80 GB HD. The computer will freeze up on him at all different times. It can be on startup, after running for a short while or after a long while, but does it everyday. Once it starts on that day it does it a lot. Here is what I did so far: Replaced hard drive- my dad's request. Replaced cable for hard drive Replaced cooling fan in power box, original fan made awful noise at startup. Added extra cooling fan; mid tower. After replacing the hard drive I ran the Manufacture's diagnostics software on the old drive, found no errors. I als…

NetStumbler doesn't work with my Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter
by Guest MaxAttacks- 9 replies

I've seen other posts by people who use the Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter with Netstumbler under Windows 98 SE, but I just can't get it to work for me. I currently connect to the internet with another USB adapter, (made in China, with no FCC ID or brand name), combined with a wok, (aka: WokTenna), tethered to the end of a 15' active USB cable, which has enough range to reach the house from our trailer about 300' away. I don't know what signal strength I get from this arrangement, but its slow. About comparable to 150% of what I used to get with dialup. Now, I'd like to be able to use an old laptop that also has Windows 98 SE together with the Netgear WG111V2 USB…

Have been working on my GW Essential 667 with 98SE. Some problems so did a clean reinstall and was adding/updating programs when found out I could no longer get Windows Update service. @#$%^&*(. Found and used Autopatcher98.Dec_Full_Final.exe. It has updates and tweaks. Now when my computer starts I get the message "Error loading TcpMib.dll". click ok, message goes away and computer still seems to work ok, but I am getting a little tired of checking ok whenever I turn the computer on. Searched MSKb for message. "Error Loading the TCP MIB Library" error when you add a standard TCP/IP printer port in Windows XP and in Windows 2000 View products t…

Anonymous folder icon

Sometimes, on assorted W98 PCs, I've seen an icon on the desktop - looks like the normal yellow folder icon - with no label. Any idea what it is? (I have a feeling it sometimes can't be deleted, too.) -- J. P. Gilliver | Tel. +44 1634 203298

Digital Blue QX5 microscope
by Guest J. P. Gilliver- 5 replies
I've just bought one of these, and when trying to load the CD (before connecting the microscope of course), it says I need Media Player 9. If I try to run the setup.exe that's in one of the directories on the disc, it says I need Me/2000/X?pVista. (Both where I got it - thinkgeek - and DigiBlue's own website say the microscope will work with '98.) It also doesn't come with a TWAIN driver, which is all I would really want - after all, it's just a camera as far as the PC is concerned (OK, with two extra lights, but I'd do without those at a pinch). Anyone here got one of these working under '98? FWIW, (a) the software and hardware is fine: I've had it w…

Windows Registry Checker (I think) causing continuous reboot
by Guest J. P. Gilliver- 8 replies
On a friend's PC, while booting (98), one of the boxes that pops up is headed something like "Windows Registry Checker"; it says it has found a problem (I can't remember the exact words) and needs to do a restart, after which all will be OK; it has an OK button. If pressed, sure enough the PC restarts, but the box comes up again, and we can go round the loop as often as we like. If, however, I Ctrl-Alt-Delete, it appears in the list of running applications (usually as second line), and can be End Tasked; the "not responding" box comes up, so I End Task that, and thereafter, the PC seems to work perfectly happily! What is most puzzling of all: for ass…

can not get online
by Guest CdLSRN- 8 replies

I have a cable connection to my Dell XPS T450 desktop, windows 98se, 450 ram, Explorer 6.0. My virus scanner ran out of life while I was in the hospital and rehab., so I deleted it and got Avast. It worked fine for a couple of days. I think I pressed a button to have it scan while I was online. This stopped me from going online because every time I press Explorer it tries to connect to 66.135.200.145 (which is Avast) if I remember correctly. I tried to do a 'clean boot', but I remember that after I rebooted and pressed ctl alt del ...Explorer wad running, and in msconfig 'run=' and 'run=' were running (2 of them). I deleted Avast , but I guess I should have stop…

Life after Windows 98SE 1 2
by Guest bobster- 42 replies

For several years I have been dreading the day when my old 300 MHz P11 Windows 98 machine could no longer cut it. That happened recently with the failure of my master hard drive. Fortunately, my slave was a bootable clone of the master so with a jumper change, I got back up and running. But the handwriting was on the wall so I started looking for a new machine. After much personal research, and advice from knowledgeable friends (all of whom said, "avoid Vista like the plague"), I was able to get an Intel-based, dual core Dell XP model that met my relatively modest needs for a bit over $500, less display. Surprisingly, It worked fine out of the box. I…

A while back there was a thread on Google Earth, at least I *think* it was this group. Someone provided a link to a modified v4 program for 98. Well, in anticipation of using it SOMETIME it was downloaded. Finally got to install it and wow, it is nice to have this program for W98! Wish I could recall the name of the person who did it (Rick?). So if you were the one who did it, nice job, and THANKS! someone watching

Duplicated Posts Showing in OE 1 2 3 4
by Guest PCR- 81 replies

Why am I seeing over 300 duplicated posts in this NG!? It seems the first post in many threads are showing the initial post TWICE. In some case, entire thread segments are duplicated. My inclination is to reset the NG. But I must go now-- no time to even investigate! The posts are identical, but their Properties are different. Here is an example. Can the posts be coming into this NG (I am connected directly to the MS Server) from two different sources? Why do the dates seem to indicate different time zones?
