Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a
by Guest bobster- 10 replies

I have a good performing Windows 98SE machine with the following characteristics: PII 300 MHz processor 324 megs ram 2 - 20 GHz hard drives, each about 50% full All updates from MS Windows update site ZA AVAST! Host file SpywareBlaster AdAware Lot of Apps Comcast cable The machine works fine and is free of spyware and viruses. I would like to keep 98SE as long as possible. Except for the speed limitation and poor performance on videos, it suits my needs quite well. My question: I have read quite a lot about an unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a, a free download touted to greatly improve the performance of 98SE. Should I try it out? Wh…

No programs shown in the Install/Uninstall list in Windows 98SE

Here's a problem that Glen Ventura (glee) and Alan Edwards (both MVP's) are familiar with but the usual solutions they (and Microsoft) have suggested in former posts just don't seem to work for me. Multiple problems with my computer occurred after I did a Norton Utility operation to clean up my slow-running computer. I've solved most of the problems but a few critical programs still will not run, or run properly including my Outlook 98 and the Control Panel utility for Add/Remove programs. How did I get this far??? Seems that the Microsoft solution for the Outlook 98 problem (Error Message: "An OLE registration error occurred. The program is not cor…

When I plugged a USB drive into the USB port on my Win2K machine, I instantly had a new drive! But on my Win98se machine, on bootup I'm informed that it found "new hardware" and I'm given the opportunity to install the driver for it. (I ain't got one.) Any suggestions? PCI graphics card for Win98?
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 10 replies
Is it wise to install a PCI graphics card? The on-board graphics adaptor is working fine. The highest setting is true color - 24 bit. I don't know if 32 bit is better to have. So, I've considered getting a graphics card that will make true color 32 bit mode. But I think I heard somewhere that a graphics card will slow down (or bottle neck) the system. Is this true? And how about a graphics card that allows you to plug your television into it....does something like this exist? Is it worthwhile?

Maximum memory on Win98
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 10 replies

Did I hear correctly that Windows 98 cannot handle memory more than 512 MB? If I'm wrong, what IS the maximum memory for Windows 98? And what happens when that "too much" limit has been exceeded?

Question about SIMM and DIMM combination in an old computer.
by Guest thanatoid- 10 replies
Hello gang, I know this is not strictly 98-related but I know there are some real brains in here. As some of you may recall, I have a computer which will be 10 years old in September. It works fine. Really. Please don't just tell me to throw it in the trash and get a new one. When it dies for good, I will. At the moment I need nothing more. {I have a 2GHz machine for things requiring more speed than 166MHz offers (which incidentally - IMHO - does not include accessing the internet).} Anyway, the almost-10-yrs-old machine has a PC Chips M572 MB, with 6 RAM slots. 2 are DIMM, 4 are SIMM. It can take a total of 256MB of memory and the manual p…

Acronis Disk Director has caused a serious problem on my PC
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 10 replies
I thought I'd install Acronis Disk Director (version 10) on to my new Windows 98SE PC. I wanted to make a backup of my HDD by copying the whole C:\ partition. When Disk Director rebooted to perform this operation, I get a Windows Protection Fault, and the only way I can now use my computer is if I boot into safe mode. Please can someone tell me how to remove Disk Director so that I can boot-up my PC normally, without needing to go into safe mode? The problem is that when I try to boot-up in normal mode, Disk Director tries to perform its operation and it seriously fails every time. Thanks a lot, best regards, Robert.

Added more than 512Meg Ram, now no windows!
by Guest mm- 10 replies

Added more than 512Meg Ram, now no windows! I increaded my ram from 512K to 1.5 gig, and I got this message at the end of autoexect.bat, but I wasn't concerned because on this group or some other I had seen it discused already: When initializing device V86MNGR?: Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilites from your config.sys or autoexec.bat and restart your computer. I found the message on the web and the fix it said was to Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less. So I di…

Return Items to Start Menu Folder Win98SE

I went on a pruning binge in the Win98SE Start Menu folder in an effort to lessen the number of programs that start with the OS bootup. I went too far by deleting the "Accessories" folder with its arrows pointing to Games, Communications etc. Where can I locate this folder so I can copy it back to the Start Menu folder. Thanks.

Media Player 9 Playback
by Guest Charles Bennett- 10 replies

Recently I attemped to play a music cd. A popup appeared and said "unable to play, settings have been changed by another program". I recently installed both VLC for Windows and the FLV player for YouTube Videos. I figured they were the best suspects. Unistalled, and removed all references from the Registry. Went to Tools-Options and rechecked "music cd playback". Still, no good. Back to Options and "music cd playback", un-checked. Several more times same story. Checked all I can think up browsing thru system. Apparantly there is a program or setting I'm missing still active which turns off the playback option. Grateful for any suggestions. -- --------…

I decided to upgrade 98FE to SE on an IBM i1400-2911-411 via an OEM CD for an older Gateway desktop model that my son had discarded. Don't know the model. Things are working, after a fashion, but the display adapter and driver installed is the basic VGA, ala minimum colors and screen density. Can't adjust either via Control Panel. Wanting to have more than this grainy screen to read, to deal with some other Windows' incompatabilities and peculiarities, I went to the Lenovo site and downloaded the video driver for the original 98FE installation - Neomagic MagicGraph 128ZV+. Installed it and the machine upchucked - Windows damage message, Win stopped loadin…

Question about Mouse settings
by Guest BAP- 10 replies
My current Computer is a Sony VAIO - Pentium 4 - CPU 1300M. From the settings options, the mouse appears to be set at double click, but whenever I attempt at highlighting/selecting a group of objects (jpeg, .txt or whatever files) and single click on the first of a series, it immediately wants to work with the first object and gives me no time to highlight any other or range of others. I tried to slow down the click speed but it does not seem to make a difference. It does appear that every thing is executed by a single click, but I do not see other options about the mouse movement. Am I missing something?

Installing a winXP driver on a win98 machine...
by Guest Brad Pears- 9 replies
We have a shared printer hooked up to an older Win98 desktop machine. The printer is an HP PSC 2210 all-in-one. When an XP user attempts to add a printer and specifies the shared printer location i.e. \\computername\printername they are then asked to select a driver etc.... Windows XP does not include a driver by default for the PSC 2210 so it means the user has to use the "Have Disk" option and locate the driver CD or install from a network location. Is there a way I can add the XP driver to the WIn98 machine so that the driver will be automatically installed on their XP machines when they add the printer? I am thinking it can't likely be done (the reverse…

How to change Windows Greeting?
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 9 replies
How do I change the Windows greeting? Win 98SE I inherited from a fellow employee an IBM ThinkPad [laptop], which he kindly converted for my use. The only residual left was a greeting with his name on it asking for a password that only required I hit CANCEL to boot up Windows and fully use the laptop. He is no longer with the firm, all the licenses for all the software are legitmate. I've used this unit for a while with a lot of my own installations added to the existing structures, and I'm reluctant to reinstall from scratch. So how do I change the greeting to use my name, or bypass the request? Robert

Hi to all, again...... I am continuing to attempt to clean up my system after my recent computer meltdown (see "Internet Connection Problems"). I see the following message, when I restart my computer in MS/DOS mode: error: Memory Manager not detected. PCI audio driver requires EMM386 or similar. PCI audio driver NOT loading. I did a Google search on "Memory Manager not detected" and there I found an exchange involving Glen Ventura. His message directed the one in need of help to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229186 - Sound Blaster Live! Error Message After Installing Windows.
