Start menu
by Guest Emrys Davies- 15 replies
- 1.2k views
I have Win98 SE, OE6 and IE6. I am curious to know of which system the 'Start' menu is a part. I have read lots about it on Google and although there are lots of good articles about it and its components no one says whether it is part of Windows, Windows Explorer or Outlook Express. I suspect that it is the former but would someone put me out of my misery? Thanks, Emrys Davies.

Internet Wi-Fi Connectivity with W98
by Guest PeeDee- 4 replies
I still have a ThinkPad 240, which is loaded with W98 and I prefer to carry because this notebook is much lighter than my current ThinkPad, and still does many things. However, it is my belief that the 240 cannot take advantage of Wi-Fi environments here and there because W98 does not support that technology, even if the 240 has an Internet card in its PC card slot. Does anyone know if there is a way to download files or drivers (whatever) to make W98 able to connect to the Internet using a Wi-Fi card, or some other device, in the card slot? Thanks

And my > 5 year old 120 Gb HD is failing, so I bought one of those nice fast Seagate sata2 320Gb barracuda. Should I re-frase the subject line to: "I use linux" ? Or is there some hope ? I remember when I used windows 95 2Gb was a big problem, but I solved that with a bios and fdisk update. TIA

Why did Google change this?
by Guest lb- 7 replies
I frequent these NG's a lot and still cannot figure out why they changed how posts are listed and how active topics are dealt with. I see on the right side is the supposed improvement listing active older topics. I see in here, 3 topics that are spam and only have 1 author and no replies. How are these active? I sometimes have to go back many pages to find topics that have had several replies in the last 24 hours, but are not in the list on the right. How is this an improvement? Please go back to the way it was done and post topics in order as they are authored or replied to. The spam will die out faster that way. I am not sure who to complain to so may…

problems with re-set calendar, (pleh ! ! !)
by Guest kraine- 14 replies
- 1.2k views
Just bought this clunker laptop so my mom can run her nutrition program on it. THe program links to the calendar, and keeps track of what you eat every day. Unfortunately, the calendar for the system is messed up, and I don't have any discs or anything to fix it. I reset the date, then the next time I turn on the computer, it's a different time, and day. My guess is I have to download something (the clunker only has CD capability, no internet, no usb). Can anyone help me? I'd like to get this mailed out to my mom soon. Many many thanks, Kathy

internal clock help
by Guest kraine- 11 replies

Just replaced the cmos battery, but still get this message, (and the clock/date still doesn't work properly, I really need it to). "Calendar can't find one or more of the files it needs to run. Run the calendar set up program again to install the missing files..." my problem: I don't have any discs with the laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT (PA1230U-T2C). It runs WIn98 (don't have that disk either). The laptop also doesn't have internet. I would download something on my good laptop to CD, then run it on the TOshiba. But not sure how do to this? and what to download? Any help is GREATLY and gratefully appreciated, you guys are terrific! -Kat…

"RPC stub" error. I finally decided to find out what it is.

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Download_Area/ATW_Library/Windows _Misc/Win___9-Incompatible_version_of_the_RPC_stub_error.pdf It's a 2 page 70KB PDF file. The first page, explaining /why/ this happens is worth it even if you still use a 9600 modem. Absolutely hilarious - yet, sad. Good old Microsoft. I don't know if I can continue to hate Google. OLEAUT32.DLL
by Guest lifeandlaughter- 7 replies

My Internet Explorer kept clinging, so I have Dr. Watson running in the background. Now Dr. Watson gives me various messages associated with OLEAUT32.DLL. The last message read "OLEAUT32.DLL attempted to use a null data pointer variable." I'm not sure what that means, but I do know that my computer has an older and newer version of this DLL ( older is April 1999 and the newer is August 2008). Could my computer be experiencing some sort of conflict by having both versions of the same DLL installed?

Win 98se wallpaper question.
by Guest kraut- 14 replies
On my one system that has 98se on it when I use a pic for wallpaper that is in portrait size (Taller then wide) Windows stretches the width so it fills the whle screen but the height stays the same. My second system which also has 98se shows it in portrait size with blank space on side of it. How and where would I find / change the setting for the first system that stretches it so it shows it as is like my second system? TIA

Windows and Genuine Update
by Guest Dan- 4 replies

I just noticied that you now need to have Windows XP and/or Windows Vista to use Genuine check for downloads and this never used to be a problem. Heck, I even have Genuine check with my Windows 98 Second Edition but it is apparently no longer good enough and that goes for Windows 2000 Professional also which still gets security updates by Microsoft. I use Office XP Professional in 98 Second Edition and just manually update it because the office update tool will not work in 98 Second Edition. http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/AutomaticUpdates.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=e0175119-9a5b-44c3-b1de-9b2a9aa6cff6&Error=6&sGuid=73b74a3f-94fd-…

Adding applications to "Open with" pick-list
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 6 replies
When you hold down the Shift key and r-click a highlighted file in Explorer, or when you launch a file type for which there is no association, you are presented with an "Open with" pick-list. This list appears to be generated from the active file associations at the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key. This means that if you have two applications which are used for opening PDF files, say, then only the currently active one will show up in the list. To select the other one, you need to choose "Other" and then browse for it. Currently what I'm doing is creating a dummy file type and associating the second application with the dummy. For example, Opera is my default…

Script Sentry question
by Guest thanatoid- 1 reply
Having seen Script Sentry mentioned here, I checked into it. It seems like a good alternative to what I have done - removing most of the scripting files from win\sys (with NO ill effects whatsoever I might add). But I did that before I even knew what a firewall etc. was, and anyway, firewalls don't guard you against a browser executing malware. I read about it and DL'd it and it looks like a pretty good piece of software to me. Anyone have much experience with SS? Care to comment? -- Those who cast the votes decide nothing. A hidden registry key?
by Guest ms- 15 replies
- 1.1k views
I use Winpatrol, and it kept showing a warning that Script Sentry wanted to open reg extensions. I selected No. I uninstalled Script Sentry, no help, deleted all files on the drive for Script Sentry, no help. I ran RegSeeker, cleaned all "safe" entries, and searched for SS, no entries. I ran RegEdit, searched for SS, no entries. I don't like them, but ran a relatively safe cleaner, Wise Registry Cleaner, still get the WinPatrol warning screen, the path it shows does not exist in my Utilities folder. Cold boots in between. So it appears Script Sentry is still somewhere in my registry, how to locate it? ms
