System is acting very strange - What do I do? 1 2 3

Hello. I am using an old Windows 98 computer that doesn't seem to work properly. Apart from all the hard drive and boot problems, there are more problems with the drivers on the computer. Here are the problems: 1. When I finally decided to try it (after some considerable time) it said that it found a permanent hard drive failure. What The? 2. At startup, the sound driver produces this loud 'BEEP'. I have no idea what it is, but it also happens when I insert the PC Card. There is also no sound. 3. After installing a mouse driver from a CD, it told me that the driver would be ready to use - after resolving a conflict. Do I fix it? Yes. But it d…

I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, 98SE & ME. However, I have a ton of learning CDs for my 3-year-old and they are Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 only (some of them). So, I need to be able to get the patches/updates for Win95-WinMe somehow. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am trying to rescue some old files from a computer that has Win98 SE as the OS. The computer did function until recently and I obviously did something wrong. Now when I power up this error message immediately comes on: "CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck-CPU SOFT MENU Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP Award Modular BIOS v4.5lPG, An Energy Star Ally Pentium III CPU at 300 MHz" If I go into CMOS via DEL there is a CPU SOFT MENU II but there is nothing there to effect a change; only lists the CPU operating Speed and power supply. If I click the F1 button the computer goes to the brief Windows welcome scree…

I'm trying to reinstall windows 98 on my computer. I succesfully reinstalled it, but it didn't have everything on it. I found the first disck to reinstall and figured that was my problem. So I tried to redo it with this disc but now my computer freezes when i try to install. It freezes when it gets to 100% when saying it's getting ready for setup. I think its the security in the BIOS but I don't know how to change it. Please Help!

Strange Content.IE5 behavior 1 2 3
by Guest Eugenia- 50 replies
- 2.1k views
Hi. W98se. My Content.IE5 Folder and subfolders took on a peculiar attribute. I was looking for something in there and noticed that it no longer resembled the regular appearance, where one might find 10 or more alphanumerically named subfolders. It looked like the Content.IE5 that one might find in WinXP. i.e. - generally having roughly 4 alphanumeric subfolders. I've tried everything: DOS Deltree - which still ends up giving me the same result - and then simply deleting those folders (Temporary Internet Files / Cookies / History) from another operating system. Same issue persists. :-( Even after performing the Deltree of Tempor~1 in DOS, once rebooted…

Deleting Files causes Freezup 1 2 3
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 50 replies

A while ago I was trying to network my laptop (Win2K) to my desktop (W98se). I never did get it to work and gave up. I only wanted the network to copy my camera pictures to the laptop. I decided it was easier to copy files using flash memory sticks, than fight with the network connections. Anyhow, I am not posting this to get help with the network. I abandoned that project weeks ago. The problem is that ever since I tried to make this network work, I have been getting freezups. They occur particularly when I delete or move many files. For example, moving all the camera photos from my camera card (via USB card reader), caused the computer to just free…

firewalls - what to block and why - your security at risk 1 2
by Guest MEB- 49 replies

PCR and Gram Pappy [among others] have been discussing firewall settings and what they can or should be used for. In the spirit of those discussions, I thought I would post some blocked activity from a SINGLE session/contact through my ISP and ONLY to this news server and my email accounts [via OE6]. This is from the firewall log [several of my normal settings/restrictions were specifically reset for this presentation]. No other Internet activity occurred [e.g., no external IE or browser usage or other activity]. All *allowed activity* has been removed, so that the addresses and activities blocked might be addressed for perhaps a greater understanding of the…

Free Registry Cleaner Download Review 1 2
by Guest voujnbwuotkd@yahoo.com- 49 replies
- 2.1k views
The registry is a very sensitive component of the windows operating system which can most often be the core of any problems you may experience. The reason why is because it contains very important information about your computers hardware and software configurations which are stored in the form of registry keys. So basically every time you decide to add or remove software or upgrade hardware, those relevant entries in the registry will change. This causes it to become "clogged up" and will eventually lead to problems with functionality of programs and general performances. It would be great if computers would constantly function as if they were new, but unfortuna…

How to install DSL, how to install ethernet card? 1 2
by Guest mm- 49 replies
- 2.9k views
So Verizon DSL is getting cheap and it's clear IMO that my current ISP (erols/rcn/starpower in Baltimore) is never going to have highspeed. Verizon sent me the kit and started billing me yesterday**, but not until I was on the last page of the Quick Start instructions and 2/3rds of the way through the CD did I learn that I can't, they say, use the USB port, that I have to have an ethernet card. I think I have one in the other room but haven't found it yet and I don't think it has a software CD to go with it. Since ethernet wasn't common iirc in 1998/9, do I need to find software somewhere else. (The ethernet card I found on ebay had a cd to go with it.) I…

Scandisk and external 320GB USB HD 1 2
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 49 replies
- 2.6k views
I recently purchased a 320GB HD and a USB enclosure. I used Fdisk (in a Win98SE DOS box) to partition the drive, and I then formatted it via the GUI. Fdisk reported some strange numbers but in the end it appears that the drive's full capacity was achieved. My question is, is it OK to use Scandisk to verify this drive, or will it corrupt the file system? IIUC, internal drives have issues with Scandisk but external drives are treated differently in some way. Are there any other precautions I should be aware of? BTW, if anyone would like me to do some testing, now is the time. I suppose I could do my own experiments with Scandisk, but I thought I'd get some opi…

Setup by design just for a single user; very nice and simple, and easy to keep track of *everything*. A very, very, lean operating system. (I think it's somewhere around 200 MB in total, isn't it?) > But to go back to 98SE > would mean reformatting the hard drive and using my external drive (which > doesn'…

OK--The Floppy Disk Drive Question 1 2
by Guest DaffyD®- 45 replies

I'm running Win 98SE. I recently replaced the power supply on my computer, going from a 350W to 400W. After I plugged everything back in, the floppy disk drive kept turning like a cd drive and the fdd light on the front of the computer stayed on. Now, I've gone through almost all the tests--checking the Molex connector to be sure it's in there correctly; making sure the fdd ribbon cable red wire side is connected to pin 1. Making sure the power supply is in there properly. I tried flipping some connections around just to see if that would fix things--nothing. I even bought a new fdd and installed it, again making sure all connections were correct, and still had …

Support for AVG Free after August 2008 1 2

While checking out the Grisoft site for some AVG Free information (I have been using AVG Free for a couple of years), I came across the following information: Important notice "Some older operating systems such as Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 98 will only be supported until August 2008 as a minimum". So I asked about this on the AVG Free forum, got the following response: "I can say that currently Win95 isn't officially supported but AVG Free still works on it... but I can't say that will also be true for Win98-WinME at the point that Grisoft does drop support for them. I can say that most ( not all ) of the othe…

registry help,please! 1 2

Greetings, Today, my 98 pc crashed and when I restarted it, it came up in the mode where you get 5 or so choices, normal, safe mode, etc. The #5 "command prompt only" was highlighted and I couldn't choose another, and all I see is the C:\> . What command do I put in to get it started again. I put in the # 5 and "command prompt only" and got "bad command" on both. It also said to run scanreg when it gets started. Is "scanreg" the command I use to start that? Do I need C: only? what are the other two symbols for? Any other suggestions are appreciated. Jim

Life after Windows 98SE 1 2
by Guest bobster- 42 replies

For several years I have been dreading the day when my old 300 MHz P11 Windows 98 machine could no longer cut it. That happened recently with the failure of my master hard drive. Fortunately, my slave was a bootable clone of the master so with a jumper change, I got back up and running. But the handwriting was on the wall so I started looking for a new machine. After much personal research, and advice from knowledgeable friends (all of whom said, "avoid Vista like the plague"), I was able to get an Intel-based, dual core Dell XP model that met my relatively modest needs for a bit over $500, less display. Surprisingly, It worked fine out of the box. I…

DOS question 1 2

P166, had W95, then formatted with a W95 boot disk. Loaded several DOS programs, normal folder situation. On bootup, I kept seeing a W95 logo, starting W95, then it booted to a C prompt. There was a small partition, non-DOS. Did Fdisk and removed the non-DOS partition. Ran Fdisk again, now only C, no partitions. empty. Reformatted using the W95 boot disk. Since I will be working with old DOS games intended for DOS 6, tried to reformat with a DOS 6.22 boot disk, message "wrong DOS version". Tried to install Dos 6.22, it's method is leave the boot disk in and reboot, install will start. Did that, "missing system disk, insert..." with the DOS 6 boot …
