Win98 RD client no longer able to connect to XP Pro
by Guest Karlof- 9 replies
I have a client that has a WINDOWS 98SE Laptop. He has been using the laptop for years to connect to a handful of XP Pro computers using the Win98 RD Client. Suddenly he is getting the message "The client could not connect to the remote computer ..." on about 50% of the computers he tries to connect to. These are computers that he was previously able to connect with. If I try to connect to these unreachable machines using an XP box I am able to make the connection. Nothing has changed on his end, and the connections are actually saved as shortcuts (I have tried re-creating them on the fly, but this didn't help). Has some windows update occurred on the remo…

by Guest 98 Guy- 9 replies

I notice that batmeter.dll is a process module loaded by systray. Does it perform any useful or needed function for a desktop system? Tangent: Is there a list of processes that systray is configured to load? Batmeter.dll is not mentioned anywhere in the registry.

Black screen (no logo) before desktop shows
by Guest dk_- 9 replies

How can I display the Windows 98 logo (with the changing color bar at the bottom) before the desktop loads, instead of just see a black screen for 1 minute? When the machine starts, the Windows logo displays, then the screen goes black for about one minute, then the desktop loads. The machine is running fine. msdos.sys does have the line "Logo=1" I tried just putting 'logo.sys' in the C: directory. No joy. Thanks. -Dennis -- Dennis Kessler http://www.denniskessler.com/acupuncture

This is most peculiar, posted a few replies to the 'Yikes and yowsers' thread, which came through and then replies to PCR and Bill's posts (that didn't show yesterday) with the subject line changed slightly to reflect thus, they didn't come through. Can see the PCR-Bill subject line changed posts when I go to google groups to look (no, no, no not post!) but they don't show in outlook express !! perplexedpebble B-(

New Media Player

Since Windows Media Player 9 is not supported anymore in Windows 98 Second Edition, can users of this newsgroup suggest players that they like to play *.mp3 files and the like that will work in Windows 98 Second Edition and are currently supported. I do not mind paying a fee for a good media player if needed.

Freeware and/or Paid Software Model
by Guest Dan- 9 replies
I wanted to get people's feedback on which model they prefer and why do they prefer the model. I prefer actually paying for software then using too much software that is supported by ads especially because of the problems with adware in this day and age. Please respond with comments to this post about if you prefer the pay for software model or the software model that is "free" and supported by ads as well as having the chance to mess with your computer. You can see my bias here but I would like feedback from everyone if they get a chance. Please try and use thoughtful comments and don't just rant and rave as I have been guilty of in the past in this n…

periodic desktop icons moving?
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 9 replies

From time to time, the icons on my desktop rearrange, all to the left. I do not have auto arrange icons set. I have Ez-desk, so it's not a major problem to put them back where I want them, but it _is_ irritating. It seems to come and go in phases, and I've had it on at least two machines. At the moment, I can't remember when it last happened on this laptop; on my desktop machine, it tends to happen at least once per session, within about ten or twenty minutes of booting. Any idea what's causing it? -- J. P. Gilliver. UMRA: 1960/<1985 MB++G.5AL(+++)IS-P--Ch+(p)Ar+T[?]H+Sh0!:`)DNAf ** http://www.soft255.demon.co.uk/G6JPG-PC/JPGminPC.htm for thought…

scanreg.exe switch syntax ?
by Guest RJK- 9 replies
Hello, An old friend recently presented me with an "old" W98 based standalone PC ! :-) ...built 20th-May-2000 ! After a long fight, (Asus P5A? AMD K6/2-500), and it hanging on a black screen, (after bios post and the "Windows 98 screen" with the "scrolling/rotating" line at the bottom of it), I fought and uninstalled Norton Internet Security, which I suspected was causing the black screen hang, .....and indeed after removing Norton - it will boot up in Windows Normal GUI mode. So ! before things start going backwards I'd like to scanreg /backup ....and label it. Do I have to use the quotes "??? ??? ???" .....and is it possible that 98's sc…

The CD drive in my Inspiron 7000 reads and opens things like pdf files, but will not play commercial or burned CDs. WinMediaPlayer message says it cannot handle this type file (.cda) Sometimes another message says, "Unable to find file". I re-installed WMPlayer, check all the file associations, refreshed drivers, all to no avail. Any help appreciated

How to reinstall Win98 from Resource CD
by Guest cjkulow- 9 replies

Hi All! Have formatted my hd, have startup boot disk, have Dell Reinstallation CD, have product key, and after I startup with boot floppy, choose "with CD ROM support," I see that the CD ROM drive is read. Have Reinstall CD that came with my computer in CD drive, but when I'm at the e:\ prompt and type "setup" I get message "Bad command, or file not found." I looked at the CD contents at a different computer and cannot find a setup.exe file, or similar. What am I missing? I've read several instructions on reinstalling WIN98 and always get stuck at the same point when I am supposed to type "setup". Thanks for any help! I am not DOS savvy - perhaps that's t…

Successful AWE64 ISA PnP installation!
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 9 replies
Recently, I posted a message to this newsgroup, the subject was - ISA Plug and Play not working (clean install) I am very pleased to say that I have fixed the problem: I am now able to insert an AWE64 ISA PnP sound card inside the Win98SE PC, and the PC correctly identifies it, and everything appears to be working great. Summary of fixed problem: I think that the Value AWE64 card that I was using (before a 2nd AWE64 *gold* card arrived this morning for me to test) may have been faulty. Carefully examining one the only configurable jumper, which allows the user to disable midi functionality (I think), it looked damaged. Also, perhaps the "ISA slot pins" …

NetStumbler doesn't work with my Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter
by Guest MaxAttacks- 9 replies
I've seen other posts by people who use the Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter with Netstumbler under Windows 98 SE, but I just can't get it to work for me. I currently connect to the internet with another USB adapter, (made in China, with no FCC ID or brand name), combined with a wok, (aka: WokTenna), tethered to the end of a 15' active USB cable, which has enough range to reach the house from our trailer about 300' away. I don't know what signal strength I get from this arrangement, but its slow. About comparable to 150% of what I used to get with dialup. Now, I'd like to be able to use an old laptop that also has Windows 98 SE together with the Netgear WG111V2 USB…

AGP texture acceleration - Active or not ?
by Guest dave xnet- 9 replies

Hello, my old voodoo 3 2000 video card died, so I threw iin a Radeon vivo 7200 I had spare. In Windows 98, I'm running Catalyst 3.1 (Omega version). The driver seems to be running fine. I have a VIA MVP3 MB, the 4in1 is installed, and I updated the via cpu to agp bridge manually for good measure. In dxdiag, the AGP texture accelaration button is "greyed out" and is apparently "not available". However, in the ATI advanced settings/smartgart tab it shows AGP is operational at 1x. I installed 3dmark 2001 SE and it ran fine to completion. It confirms AGP is active at 1x, but dxdiag still has the greyed out button. What is the status of AGP on this…
