I have W-98 in my secondary PC. However, W-98 does not support recent jump (pen) drives, thus I am plannig upgrade to Wxp. Have boxed Wxp upgrade version but instructions indicate that the upgrade will "replace" previous OS. I have several important W-98 program that will like to keep, but they will not work properly under Wxp. Thus, will like to keep W-98 as an alternative OS. Q: How can I installe Wxp and keep W-98 to be used when needed??

RE: A good subject line matters more (was: Re: does size matter) Your missing the point Mr. 98 Guy !!! Go back to twidilling with your fingers! He (or she - I will just say He) was simply saying that he wants to create a backup drive for Windows XP and format it as NTFS! Does that exceed your knowledge? I have no knowledge AT ALL about hard drives, but I am sure that we should ALL know the difference between FAT, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS! Anon, your best option is to dual boot like you said. However, I suggest you buy either an external HD, a black CD, or a tape and backup your private information to it. After that, you can install Windows 98SE and make…

Antivirus / Firewall / Backup software recommendations for 98se
by Guest Zilbandy- 9 replies

I just drug out the old P3 800mhz Dell from the closet, hooked it up and it booted right up. :) Now, all I need to do is get everything cleaned up so my son can use it for some older DOS games and minimal Internet browsing. Does anyone have any thoughts on software... cheap or, better yet, freeware versions of Anti Virus, firewall and backup software? My initial thoughts are AVG free, but I hear that 7.5 is the last version to support 98, and it's not being supported with new updates. I'll probably use and older version of Zone Alarm since that's what it currently has, and it still appears to work. I also am considering Acronis True Image. I have both version 7 a…

Partitioning a HD with win 98 with windows xp CD-Rom
by Guest Ken- 9 replies

My question is this. I have a hard drive that won't boot and has windows 98 (not sure what edititon). The motherboard still boots, and I have it set up to boot from CD-ROM. When I put my windows xp pro CD in, it attempts to boot from it and fails. I seem to recall last time I played with 98 years and years ago, that I needed a boot disk on a floppy. This will be very inconvenient for me to get now, and I was wondering if there is a way to get around it, so that I can use the windows Xp pro CD in the rom, to boot up to the partition screen so that i may attempt to repartition the drive to windows XP?

Booting problems after deleting XP from the E partition of a 98SE machine
by Guest thanatoid- 9 replies

Well, I installed XP on my Win98SEL computer, played with it a little, installed a few programs, made the interface etc. as annoying as possible (it was actually quite easy to turn off all the idiot prompts, although it seems that getting rid of "My Documents" may be impossible... but I'll worry about it later, maybe), and decided it isn't /that/ horrible. Basically, I have found out what I wanted to know about XP. Someday I may find out what I need to know about Linux. For now I have decided there is no point whatsoever in keeping XP as long as my Win98SEL machine runs as well as it does - and does everything I need it to do. When it dies and I hav…

Generic Memory Device Drivers?
by Guest Davej- 9 replies
Have been wanting to add some flash memory space to my old Thinkpad but my last two attempts have run into the driver problem. Bought a Lexar 2GB USB thumbdrive -- but no Win98 driver is available. Bought a 4GB Kingston CompactFlash card for use with my Dazzle CF card adapter -- but it also demands a Win98 driver. I'm sure there isn't one. Some time back I tried to install a "generic" USB memory-device driver -- but did not have any success. How many people are successfully using generic flash memory drivers? Thanks.

As one might expect here, I have windows 98SE. My email program used to grab the focus of the system sometimes when new email came in. Lately, it grabs it every time, I think. And Eudora is on top, when I'm trying to look at something else. My browser, FireFox2, also grabs the focus when a page is loading. It can do it 3 times for just one screen, at different stages. It's driving me crazy. CAn I turn off the switching of focus to the program that has retrieved new files, or whatever the rule is here? Can I just turn it off altogether so that I am the sole decisor of what program is on top? Thanks. If you are inclined to email me for some rea…

(Semi-OT) Registered ECC RAM (and Windows 98)
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 9 replies

Having re-read the Supermicro P6SBA (I have revision 2.0) mobo manual (unfortunately only the manual for revision 4.0 exists online) what must be about a dozen times now, the penny has *finally* dropped and I now understand exactly type of RAM it supports. I'd quite like 512mb of memory for my Win98 boxes. It would be nice to dual-boot them with XP, and so this amount of RAM would be a good idea I think. However, in order to get this much RAM onboard, the RAM sticks must be registered. I've found some registered sticks online (which are also ECC.) The mobo manual says it supports both registered and ECC RAM, so that's OK I think. I guess my principal q…

How to read harddrive that was once too big for mobo? I have a hard drive that was too big for the mobo that I first used it on. I think it is 800 Meg (but I'll check again if it matters) and when I bought it, I think Western Digital had a remapping program that allowed the drive to pretent to the mobo that its geometry was different from reality. I tried connecting it as a slave, setting the jumpers correctly, and iirc, it wasn't recognized at all. I bought an enclosure and hooked it up to the USB port, and although the computer seees the enclosure and installs or loads the HDUSB stuff, the drive never shows up on any drive list. Conecting it as a mast…

Recently when I end some programs running in a DOS window, the window size reduces to slightly larger than a postage stamp. I have been running these programs for years without that happening. I can't find any setting that would correct this. Has anybody encountered this problem? Thanks for any help. Jack

Cannot sign in to messenger or load hotmail sign-in webpage login.live.com Getting Network timeout for hotmail and Msn instant messenger will not work. Tried trillian. It kind of worked, but kept knocking me off every few seconds. What is odd, it works for people that have direct connection but not dial-up. My mothers work can access hotmail. They have wireless access. The two dial up ISP, I tried timed out. I checked my host file, there is nothing that would block it. I tried different browsers and neither worked. Greg

by Guest gchelp- 9 replies

I have a legit product key that I got when I bought my computer many many years ago. I decided to wipe my hard drive and format it again and then reload Windows 98. When it asked me for the Windows Product Key I entered it exactly as it is on my Certificate of Authenticity and I do not have enough keystrokes for it to take the number? Does anyone have any knowledge on who I can contact at Microsoft to find out what to do?

Deleting Profiles (.PWL)
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 9 replies

Hi everyone. It's me again...the "INTERMEDIATE" user! It seems the more I explore Windows 98, the more I have questions I have no answers to. I've been stuck in a Windows 98 rutt for the last 5 years or so (that is, I ALWAYS did the same things over and over again...never really explored the operating system's features). I finally just learned how to create profiles which alllow each profile to have specific desktop settings and such. I have since deleted a profile via the USER option in Control Panel and ended up re-creating it a few times (because NOW I'm exploring, you see!). Anyway, I've noticed that my free disk space has been getting smaller a…
