question not answered in Vista
by Guest CdLsRN- 2 replies

I have a Dell XPS 420 desktop with Vista Ultimate with documents, pictures, mail, favorites, etc. that have been imported from Windows 98se. I can click on existing favorites and Links (that were imported), but I get an "unknown error" message when I try to place a new favorite or link into the list. Just can not figure out how to do it. Neither could Dell. I know they were imported correctly as it was done by a Microsoft MVP, and everything else seems to be working just fine. I posted this to Windows Vista group and no one answered. I called Dell and they wanted to go into my computer and change a lot of things around because he didn't recognize anything tha…

SE and Lexar jump drive
by Guest CommandLineJunkie- 3 replies

My jump drive works fine if I have it plugged into the USB port when I boot the computer. However, if I boot the computer without the drive plugged in, it won't recognize it when I do plug it in. I've tried to let the computer find it as new hardware, but it doesn't see it. Anyone got a fix for this one? Thanks

Once in awhile, on my Win98 First Edition desktop, I will get a blue screen that says "Unable to write to Drive C". When I click on enter, the desktop appears, and everything works fine. Could this be an impending hard drive issue? Thanks! Scott

U-S Cert Vulnerability Advisories

I thought I would post the security advisories here for those of us using Internet Explorer since many of us dual-boot with Windows XP. It is nice that Mozilla Firefox vulnerabilities have been addressed with the newest version but it looks like it is time for Microsoft to have security updates with Internet Explorer. http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/bulletins/SB08-189.html Microsoft -- Internet Explorer Cross-domain vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 allows remote attackers to access restricted information from other domains via JavaScript that uses the Object data type for the value of a (1) location or (2) location.href property. unk…

Explorer
by Guest Jim- 5 replies

From time to time, that is not all that often, the Windows Explorer will "not responding" and then reset itself. This knocks off some of the running programs in the system tray. If I look at the Close Program Manager [ctrl+alt+del] these knockouts are usually still running. I know that I can reboot the machine to correct this problem however, is there a way to bring all this back up without rebooting? What is the cause...probably poorly writ third party software running in the background.

Glen,, I was at your site, but its got hammers and nails happening. My reason for the visit was regarding a file you have called 'runfix.zip' which restores the utility that updates the rb.cab files. I was hoping for maybe some print outlining what it does, or even if it is the utility that I was told about. Question.. when will your site be up and running?

Ping: Franc & MEB et al.

Ithought I'd let you and the group know what ended up happening re getting a (2007 model) new CX5500 Epson printer/copier/scanner to get the printer to work on an win98se operating sys. Initially, I thought I had done the install properly,..and it's not difficult, the Epson CD is for install-dummies,...still the printer didnt work, the PC just chucked up an error message saying "cant see device" on USBPRNT1 (or close to that). Franc's USB program indicated the PC was aware an Epson had been installed, connected to USB 1. I tried different cables, checked all the files on C:, and there were about 10 of them. There were Epson Icons on the desk-top for its 3 fu…

by Guest Jason James- 13 replies

Howdy I found an office supply place who also sold printers/scanner/copiers (allin one). They had spec sheets in frames for each, and I found more than one which could run on win98SE,..no earlier tho. Went to a larger electronics place which sold printers etc and selected an end of run Epsom CX5500 (2007 model). I set it up and tried the next USB port and error message "cant communicate with USBPRNT1). Checked Epsoms copy function and all OK. The thing appears to be working. Tried removing the new KB. reinstate the old one with the 1/4" circle plug/ This left the 2 USBs unused. Plugged Epsom into USB-1 reran the install CD, all OK, but when tried to…

Return to 98 1 2

Greetings to the group from a new lurker here. Recently I acquired a laptop about 10 years old and the recovery disk with it installs good old 98 first edition. I have been a little startled at how slick 98 is. Of course the machine is designed for it with a 336 Mhz Celeron and 128 Mbyte RAM. I have been using it steadily for about a week now and it hasn't crashed, blown up, locked up or BSOD'ed on me once. In fact, so far it's as smooth and slick and steady as XP. I used 98 SE in its heyday but I am still impressed at how good it actually is. I have a couple of questions the knowledgeable folk here might be able to help me with. Is there a reasonably c…
