Installing a wireless card
by Guest zallan@gmail.com- 12 replies

Hi - I am helping a friend with a small problem, and I would appreciate some help. He has an older Sony VAIO laptop and we are trying to install an SMC PCMCIA card so that he can join a wireless network. When we insert the card, Windows pops up and asks for a driver for a newly discovered "PCI Network Controller". Pointing Windows to the driver for the card does not work (eg. it does not think this is the driver it is looking for). I have long since stopped using W98, but I seem to remember having to deal with this or a similar problem before, but the solution is escaping me. For some reason, I suspect that the missing PCI Network Controller Driver is a Win…

Missing registry entries
by Guest JoeM- 1 reply

Was doing a virus scan and Norton found a low risk virus that it automatically removed. Just to be sure I looked at the docs for the virus and it mentioned that certain entries may have to be deleted from the registry. Since I use my own account, most of my keys fall under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/windows/current version etc or HKLM/software/microsoft/windows... or internet explorer/main etc. I noticed that I do not have any entries under HKCU/software except an empty default key, and a key named "blah" with the following data; R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;127.0.0.1;*.wired…

Has anyone used Toast.net for their ISP?
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 4 replies
- 385 views
I'm not sure where to ask this. I need to get a new ISP because the one I am using now cut the newsgroup access, their spam blocker sends the spam and blocks my good email, and now they are insisting I upgrade to XP. Their service was already horrid, and now they are jacking up their prices. Needless to say, they can take a hike. I'm limited to few choices because of my location, or it would be a long distance call. I DO NOT want to use AOL, Earthlink, or any of the "big ones". Toast.net is a local call, and their price is fair, they support Win98. But I'd like to see if anyone has any favorable or had problems with them. If you use or have used them, …

Dial Up Networking Server is checked but is not installed
by Guest Harvey- 1 reply

Hi all, I have followed the Help for installing Dial Up Networking Server, but it does not show up in the Dial Up Networking folder. I have un- checked it in the Windows component list and restarted to be sure it is uninstalled, then checked it followed the prompts for getting it from the C:\Win98 dir (a copy of my CD) and restarted to be sure it installed. But it still does not show in the DUN folder. My Win98 seems to be broken here. Anyone else ever see this, or have any suggestions. Thanks, Harvey

What to do with an ISO download
by Guest jamest1938@invalid.com- 11 replies

I began downloading a .ISO file, but I stopped it. I know this is a CD image file, but I do not burn CDs. I do not use CDs at all except those that come from a factory with data on them. I would not have the faintest idea how to even begin to burn a CD, and in all honesty, I do not care to learn how. CDs make good drink coasters and thats about all they are good for. I'm old, I use my computer to go online and edit my digital photos, and do some basic home office stuff. That's all. I'll leave the burning CDs to the young people who waste their entire lives in front of a computer screen. I have an actual life, and the computer is less than one percent of…

Suddenly slow hard drive
by Guest trevor ylisaari- 6 replies

For some reason, the second physical drive I have in my system got really slow. Acts like it is even slower than without DMA and it hogs system resources when trying to do any type of read or write functions to it. It is the slave drive on the primary IDE cable. If I try copying files to the drive, from the drive, or try doing things like a scandisk or defrag, it bogs the entire system down. I mean to the point where it takes about 30 seconds just to switch to an already open application. It's a 20 GB drive that now takes about 2 hours just to run a scandisk on. Any idea what my be causing this? It's not loosing data. And I have already checked in windows …

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate you sticking with me through this. Someone sent me the 3 DLL files I was missing. I installed them and was able to run the repair tool for IE6SP1. But that didn't help. I cleaned up my startup items with help from the group. I deleted a lot of unnecessary files. I download IE6sp1 zip from an e-mail and Gary walked my through the overinstall. I follow your advice on just about every post. Forgive me for not answering all but we spent about 24 hours just going through this. This is my third day and we are finally fixed. I think what did it is I removed my firewall.....'Trial of Transgressions'....I think that was the name. and …

We are having a severe weather alert. The weather reporter just said "Stay away from windows". Does that include Windows 98, or is that just for XP and Vista? Maybe I should use my Linux computer to get the weather report updates.... Just to be on the safe side !!!! My husband said Windows is dangerous during storms because it attracts lightning. Is that true? Blondie

98SE not broke
by Guest Lil' Dave- 1 reply

Just want to thank Gary, Pa Bear, Glee, and all the other folks that have contributed here. After b11_ left to the xp general group, its been pretty quiet. Not complaining mind you. Last long thread I saw was about XP SP3, not 98/98SE. Candidly, I seldom use 98SE, except to use DI2002 to copy the hidden ME partition, and use NERO 5.5. Wandered off to XP as ZA no longer supports 98SE. Then, had many problems with ZA, so I now use the xp firewall instead. Similar with NAV (I know, I know). NAV stopped supporting 98/98SE. The newer NAV versions are so abrasive to PC usage, I had to switch to Trend Micro in XP. Learned alot in Win 95 original, to…

Problem trying to defrag Sys Drive (C:)
by Guest SomeOne- 21 replies

Please excuse. I am not sure if I am in the proper newsgroup. I am shotgunning this to every Win98 newsgroup that I am coming across. I have tried looking this up on the new, but the only thing that it relates to is WinME I have an old system that I uses for subscription mail. I had about 100MB mem w/Win98SE Due to the age of the mother board, I have to use something called EZ Bios as I am running a hard drive that is greater than 32 gig. I have two hard drives. Drive C, E, and F are logical drive and Drive D is a single 4 Gig hard driv. Problem is this. I keep getting messages from Norton stating that Drive C is heavily fragmented (over 82%) and n…

This may be a good signal that there is something wrong with the installed software, but can anybody refer me to any fixes for icon colour depth on a Win98 PC ?
