Dell email about XP
by Guest Angel- 6 replies

Hi group, I got an email from Dell telling me that I can still get a computer from them with XP up until June 18th. After that, we can't. So does that mean we will have to settle for Vista if we need a new computer? George told me that has XP and it takes forever for it to shut down, he does not shut his down.. He is quite impressed that mine is so fast shutting down. Angel

Restricred sites zone
by Guest Jim- 17 replies

Use of the Restricted sites zone to protect against some websites that might damage the machine is fairly straight forward. However, what about files and folders that are under study and need to be in a restricted status? One example that I have seen is in user profiles>cookies that a restricted zone status has been assigned. This is also question of mine, because I did not do that zone assignment. So I guess this is a two fold question here.

problem with mp3 player/windows media player
by Guest Mirey86- 0 replies
Basicly before when i've connected the mp3 player to WMP i've been able to sync files on and they have shown up on the device in windows media player, But when i plugged it in yesterday it said the memory was taken and stuff, but it also said the device has no files on it, when it does, and it works with samsung media studio etc, but that programs terrible. so does anyone know what it might be.. maybe the files have been converted or somthing? but i'm sure WMP takes all my mp3 files anyway. i can still put files on it, but i need to be able to see what is on it and to be able to delete the files. -- Mirey86

Re: Problem Defraging Sys Drive (C:)

Re: Problem Defraging Sys Drive (C:) I am forwarding this reply to both the performance group you replied to, and the thread in win98.gen_discussion, where all the other respondents are posting and waiting to hear from you. What were the exact errors scandisk found? I would be concerned about having to make two undo floppies in one scandisk session. If it was a file system problem, you may be OK, but if there is an underlying issue with the disk surface, you may need to consider replacing the drive soon. Without running Scandisk again, look for a file in the root of the C:\ drive named scandisk.log C:\scandisk.log If found, open it with Notepad,…

(Semi-OT) Registered ECC RAM (and Windows 98)
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 9 replies

Having re-read the Supermicro P6SBA (I have revision 2.0) mobo manual (unfortunately only the manual for revision 4.0 exists online) what must be about a dozen times now, the penny has *finally* dropped and I now understand exactly type of RAM it supports. I'd quite like 512mb of memory for my Win98 boxes. It would be nice to dual-boot them with XP, and so this amount of RAM would be a good idea I think. However, in order to get this much RAM onboard, the RAM sticks must be registered. I've found some registered sticks online (which are also ECC.) The mobo manual says it supports both registered and ECC RAM, so that's OK I think. I guess my principal q…

win98 se startup issues
by Guest schmenge- 22 replies

Every time I try to boot my computer, I get the message that it's "preparing to run windows for the first time". I go through that process and let it detect devices and install drivers, but when I restart I get the same message again and must repeat the detection process. I remember from a while back that setup makes some changes to some boot files to reflect that it is first boot, but I can't recall which files. Can anyone help with this issue? It's Windows 98 SE, and the computer was given to me by a previous owner; he used it for business and removed all his files then gave me the box. Thanks in advance.

Shortcuts don't connect to the net
by Guest Joe Dolan- 4 replies

Recently I had to reinstall win 98 from my HP recovery disk. I have most programs working now, except the url shortcuts I place on the desktop, don't respond by the usual doubleclick. I can bring up IE from the taskbar, and type in or cut and paste a url into IE, and it works fine. Clicking on a Favorite doesn't work either. TIA

Network monitoring program for Win98 ?
by Guest Warren- 1 reply

Hi, I'm getting around to adding some wireless bridges to my LAN, which currently consists of a Win98 PC and wireless router. I've configured the wireless bridges by plugging them directly into my PC's ethernet adapter port. I haven't plugged devices into the bridges yet but I'd like to be able to see & confirm that the bridges are all happy and communicating with the router, preferably with a nice graphical interface. Can someone recommend a proggy ?

Problems activating monitor
by Guest Alan- 24 replies

I have a monitor that used to be connected to a Windows 98 computer but recently has been used with a Windows Vista PC. I wanted to use it on the Win98 computer. However, everytime I boot, the monitor (an old Dell model m780) just sits there. The light beside its power button just slowly blinks, and the monitor never displays anything. When I switch it back to the Vista machine, it works fine. I tried powering everything down completely and removing power from everything for a few minutes, the reconnecting and booting. No change. Same results when I power up the monitor and computer in different sequences. Any ideas? Thanks, Alan
