click-jacking - how many times must you be warned?
by Guest MEB- 8 replies

Well, yet another aspect of what I have presented in this forum has now been addressed. More of the malicious activity we find spreading across the Internet. Click-jacking http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1972&tag=nl.e539 From the article: QUOTE: With this exploit, once you're on the malicious web page, the bad guy can make you click on any link, any button, or anything on the page without you even seeing it happening. [ SEE: Adobe Flash ads launching clipboard hijack attack ] If that's not scary enough, consider than the average end user would have no idea what's going on during a Clickjack attack. Open With from a command line
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 11 replies

In Explorer, highlighting a particular file and r-clicking it while holding down the Shift key brings up a context menu with an "Open with" option. Is there any way I can automate this via a single command line? I'm thinking of something like this ... some_command.exe /option_1 ... /option_n %1 .... where %1 is the file I wish to open. Would rundll32.exe or explorer.exe have appropriate command line options? - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

BACKUP for Windows 98
by Guest DiDi- 5 replies

I have a Dell desktop,XPST-450 that I don't use. It filled up, and I bought a new Vista and I use that.. I want to backup all of the data from Windows 98 on the old machine to a 1 tb external hd with a usb port. I think this can be done with an IMAGE for Windows by Terabyte. Then I can delete/uninstall the original data from the Windows 98 machine and take it to my place in Florida and use it there for the Winter, and leave it there, instead of transporting my new Vista Machine back and forth. The problem is that if I want to restore any part of the Image backup to the 98se machine, I don't believe it can be done with the Windows Image according to the …

Do I Need a Registry Cleaner?
by Guest voujnbwuotkd@yahoo.com- 3 replies
- 620 views
"My computer seems to get slower and slower. A friend told me to clean my registry. Will that really help, and how can I do that?" Cleaning the Registry Yes, your computer will run better if you occasionally clean your Windows system registry. But first, let's define exactly what the registry is. The registry is a database in which Windows keeps track of relationships between hardware and software. It stores all the settings and options for the operating system, hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC. The registry manages your system startup options, and keeps track of all software that's installed. Prior to the introduction of the Registry in Wind…

shift-delete not working the _first_ time
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 23 replies
- 1.3k views
I usually delete files (folders too) with shift-delete rather than delete; you know, so it says "are you sure you want to permanently delete" rather than "are you sure you want to ... recycle bin" (and with a different icon). Thing is, nearly always, it doesn't work first time: it usually comes up with the recycle bin prompt. To which I say no, then shift-delete again, and it comes up with the right one. It's only on this one machine, and I'm pretty certain it _isn't_ a dodgy shift key - my fingers move very little between the first attempt that fails and the second that succeeds. Any idea what's causing it? (I know I could change it - I know the…

Games for Windows
by Guest Dan- 8 replies
I am puzzled as to why some games will support Windows 2000 but not Windows 98 Second Edition. Is the reason just because Windows 2000 still gets updates for its video and sound drivers and is still officially supported by Microsoft and/or are there other reasons. I look forward to your replies.

periodic desktop icons moving?
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 9 replies
- 866 views
From time to time, the icons on my desktop rearrange, all to the left. I do not have auto arrange icons set. I have Ez-desk, so it's not a major problem to put them back where I want them, but it _is_ irritating. It seems to come and go in phases, and I've had it on at least two machines. At the moment, I can't remember when it last happened on this laptop; on my desktop machine, it tends to happen at least once per session, within about ten or twenty minutes of booting. best LCD monitor(s) to buy - please help 1 2
by Guest Adam- 36 replies

Not sure what's the best newsgroup for this topic so here goes ... I'm thinking about replacing my ViewSonic P815 monitor from CRT to LCD. I'm always on the computer (working) so I need a nice setup. So far, I've found good reviews on the following LCD monitors ... 1) Samsung T220 Black/Red 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor 2) Dell SP2208WFP Silver 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor However, a dual monitor setup would be nice if the price is right. Not sure what's the best size for this setup though. I'm thinking of a dual 19"-20" LCD monitor setup since a dual 21"-22" LCD monitor setup might be too much? Also, some widescreen LCD monitors can be rotated from la…

The Future in Computing
by Guest Dan- 14 replies

I am certainly looking forward to the future in computing. There will be so many opportunities and sky computing certainly looks more promising now as time goes on. However, I for one am a guy who likes old-school computing while enjoying new computing as well when it is needed to accomplish the task at hand. Windows Vista has been available for a while now and now we also have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and soon will have Windows 7. Meanwhile, the browser wars are really heating up and Google has gotten into the act with its Chrome browser which I have not bothered to try out yet but know I will eventually try it out on the Windows XP Professional s…

Windows 3.x program wont work on Win98 1 2
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 36 replies
- 2.3k views
I have a really great program that I used to use for special effects on a project that I do. For some reason, this program will not work on Win98se. What's really puzzling is that it gives me an "Out of Memory" error. Well, it used to run just fine on a 386 computer with 16 megs of Ram and Windows for Workgroups 3.11. I now run a pentium III 1ghz, with 512M ram, and Win98se. So, I know it's not a lack of memory, and I tried it with nothing else running, not even startup programs. Obviously, there is something about this program that dont get along with Win98. Aside from running Win3.11 on an old computer, I'd like to find a workaround to run it on Win98.…

IIRC only older versions of Zone Alarm firewall will work properly in Win98, Jim. If you're NOT running Zone Alarm v6.1.744.1, uninstall it now. [if you're connecting to the DSL modem via a router, the router alone should provide adequate protection for the Win98 box. Others here are sure to disagree with me but so be it.] Moving on...…

Random Overlay Icons
by Guest John- 3 replies
I've just installed 98SE on a machine and installed all the available updates. Now I've got the hand icon which is overlaid on to shared folders in Explorer etc. being replaced by a random choice of any icon. I remember from many moons ago that this was a by-product of one of the updates but can't remember which :( Is there a solution to this? Or failing that can anyone tell which update causes it. Google turns up umpteen methods of removing the short-cut arrow all of which come down to installing TweakUI but nothing about this.
