Internet Connection Problems 1 2
by Guest Frog- 42 replies

I am sending this message from my XP machine (being radiated according to PRC), I can't get my Windows 98SE machine to connect to the internet. Problem: My Windows 98SE machine had a run in with a very damaging virus. I have formatted the disk in this computer(loosing all of my data files in the process). To this point, I have reloaded most of the software that was originally on this machine. At the moment, I cannot figure out why I can't make a connection from this machine to the router, and ultimately to my Verizon FiOS ISP. I evidentially have a setting somewhere along the line that is incorrect. Here are the steps I have taken to establish an i…

I did it I did it - USB on 98 - YAY! 1 2

Hi everyone. After so many of you helped me so much recently while I was trying to get USB operating reliably on 98 I just have to tell you this. Several days ago I posted that I was giving up and putting W2K on the laptop, which works fine, but is quite sluggish. Well, I just can't seem to leave it alone. I went back to some of your helpful posts in that old thread and used one of the suggested links to download NUSB.EXE again. I set up to dual boot and installed 98SE again on the spare partition. The USB driver installed and runs just fine. No idea what the heck was wrong last time. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that your offered help has born fr…

Return to 98 1 2

Greetings to the group from a new lurker here. Recently I acquired a laptop about 10 years old and the recovery disk with it installs good old 98 first edition. I have been a little startled at how slick 98 is. Of course the machine is designed for it with a 336 Mhz Celeron and 128 Mbyte RAM. I have been using it steadily for about a week now and it hasn't crashed, blown up, locked up or BSOD'ed on me once. In fact, so far it's as smooth and slick and steady as XP. I used 98 SE in its heyday but I am still impressed at how good it actually is. I have a couple of questions the knowledgeable folk here might be able to help me with. Is there a reasonably c…

WIN98SE on Desktop. Running only in Safe Mode. Device Manager has no 'Monitors' branch. So I can't install a monitor. How can this be restored? I seem to recollect a post detailing how this might be achived by extracting the necessary files from the WIN98SE disk, but can't now find it. Any ideas? Roger R

File size/Number of file limits 1 2

Hello, We are having problems combining 2 directories under Windows 98. Basically, we are appending a few hundred files to a larger directory called 'Contracts'. When we copy over the files we get the following error: 'The directory or file cannot be created.' Both directories are on the primary C drive. The target 'contracts' directory is 599MB and contains 16135 objects. Is there a limit for FAT32 filesystems running Windows 98 which would cause this error to happen. I thought maybe there was a 600MB cap and it wasn't allowed to go over, however i copied a 5 MB file in there instead of some of the smaller files and it went to 605MB. I had a feeling it w…

1782- Disk Controller Failure 1 2
by Guest ms- 40 replies

I'm using a P166 that was in an earlier thread as a test machine. I have connected a series of used small hard drives to check their status. When sucessful, first get Setup screen, auto detect the hard drive, then reboot with a W98 boot disk, fdisk, then format. Having success with 4 different drives, the motherboard, power cable, data cable all are OK. But 2 drives gave initially 1782 Disk Controller Failure. I searched, find that if above items are ok, maybe the master/slave setting may cause this error. One drive had a diagram, so it gave the error when set for Master. The other, Western Digital 31000, saved a data page but not sure of t…

I am trying to update my AdAware 1.06r1 definitions on my Win98SE computer ( using Avast, Sygate Personal Firewall) but for some reason, for the first time, when I click on "Connect", I get a message that no updates are available, this after 19 days without an update. My last successful update was on Dec. 27/07. Is there some problem I am unaware of. How can I fix this? I am a non-techie so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

Windows Update for 98 really all gone? 1 2
by Guest Harvey- 39 replies

Running Win98 (NOT SE). While reinstalling the Dial Up Networking and Server, I accidentally overwrote a newer file with an older one. (I said No instead of Yes.) Didn't catch the filename so it's gone. How can I find out and update that file? I tried "Windows Update" which worked last time I tried, even long after MS stopped supporting or updating Win98. Is there now no way to bring Win98 up to date (as of 2006 or whenever they stopped)? Harvey

Windows 98 Will Not Start Up 1 2
by Guest brbrown- 39 replies
- 2.2k views
For no obvious reason, my Windows 98 computer wil not start up.. It freezes on the first black screen with white writing stating that the "Dos key is installed" and "Mode select code page function is completed". The only way I can get rid of this is to press the restart button after which I can choose to start in Safe Mode. I have then tried to disable all applications one at a time to find the problem to no avail. Any one any ideas please.

Any USB DOS mouse drivers (useful for some boot disks, etc)? 1 2
by Guest Bill in Co.- 38 replies

(Before anyone asks: yes, I know there are a couple of DOS newsgroups on the microsoft server, but they are unpopulated (been "there" already). I'm looking for a USB mouse driver for DOS access (for a new Dell without USB legacy BIOS support). Some boot disks use DOS, but I can't find any USB mouse drivers that work for me. I've been doing some research on the net, and in the Dell user forums, and know some such drivers do exist, but: 1. There is no legacy USB support "option" in my new Dell computer's BIOS, but the "USB controller" option in BIOS is enabled, of course. 2. I've tried "usbmice" (with OCHI and UHCI drivers), and also DUSE, but n…

Have been working on my GW Essential 667 with 98SE. Some problems so did a clean reinstall and was adding/updating programs when found out I could no longer get Windows Update service. @#$%^&*(. Found and used Autopatcher98.Dec_Full_Final.exe. It has updates and tweaks. Now when my computer starts I get the message "Error loading TcpMib.dll". click ok, message goes away and computer still seems to work ok, but I am getting a little tired of checking ok whenever I turn the computer on. Searched MSKb for message. "Error Loading the TCP MIB Library" error when you add a standard TCP/IP printer port in Windows XP and in Windows 2000 View products t…

EMM386: Unrecoverable privileged operation error #I7 1 2

Inside Win98SE's "pure DOS", when I run the DOS utility called "nvram120.exe", I see the subject line error on screen, and then I have to reboot. (I wanted to run this utility to see if I could see if a particular ISA card was installed correctly.) My mobo is Supermicro P6SBU revision 1.01, and I have flashed the BIOS to revision 3.1 (latest). The BIOS is called American Megatrends AMIBIOS setup, version 2.5 © 1997. When I was setting up the mobo (yesterday), I was encountering the following situations: 1) After installing my PCI cards (one at a time), I noticed that the BIOS appeared to be "forgetting" some of these cards in the POST device listing s…

I have brought my old Win 98 SE back to life for my grandsons (ages 5 & 6) to play their internet games (specifically http://www.totaldramaisland.com). I worked with MEB on the Win 98 Networking forum and he was very helpful. I have now performed my Windows Updates, installed IE6, Avast Antivirus, Kerio Personal Firewall. Installed Flash 9 (which shows up in Add/Remove programs as Adobe Flash Player ActiveX). Additionally, he suggested I install SUN JAVA. At the http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp I found Jave SE Downloads-Previous Release_J2SE 5.0 I can find J2SE API V 1.5.0 Beta1, J2SE API V 1.5.0 Beta 2, and J2SE API V 1.5.0RC, but …

Is there a hard drive file organizer that will ... 1 2
by Guest 98 Guy- 37 replies

Is there a hard drive file organizer, optimizer, "cleaner", that will a) identify multiple copies of the same file based on - same file name (but perhaps binary identical, perhaps not) - different name, but binary identical and either follow your rules (eg smart rename) or allow you to easily move them around or delete the duplicates b) identify, catalog or list the version numbers of multiple copies of the same system files (.exe, dll, etc) The goal is to use such software (instead of manual exploration and file cutting and pasting) to organize and aggregate the contents of possibly up to a few dozen hard drives. Most hard drive file o…

Disk Recovery (RE: Computer Failure ) 1 2
by Guest BAP- 37 replies

The start of this new Post regarding the ‘Computer Failure’ Post was suggested by “MEB”, and rightly so, as the that earlier Post was creating some confusion. As was discussed in the ‘Computer Failure’ Post, the Microtime Computer, that I have been using for several years, has failed and I find it rather difficult to get it operational, again. There is a Primary Master and a Secondary Master HD’s installed in it. There are folders in both that have Data that I would like to recover. A more recent Computer, a Sony VAIO, that I am currently using, appears to have all that I would need to connect those HD’s and recover the desired Data and back up the…

This is a follow up to my 'can't get online' post. When I run Spybot it goes 3/4 of the way then a box pops up that says there is something wrong with my trojan checker. If I say o.k. it continues and says my system is clear. However, I am missing 3 files from IE6 (MSXMLA.DLL, MSXMLA.DLL, MSXMLR.DLL.

webTV adapter 1 2
by Guest Jim- 37 replies

First, please forgive the multipost after several days. I did not get a response in NG: microsoft.public.win98.webtv. Does anybody use the WebTV features of win98+? The MS TV/video adapter in the Network components list; is this a by product of an install of this webTV component in MSIEv.6? The Vista system is supposed to enhance the video experience with more advanced drivers. Is this adapter necessary for Internet streaming video in today's world? It seems to just hang on like a dead alvin.

The Secondary Disk has a lot of saved information and many family photos. Is there an easy way for me to install these disks on another machine and get the info that I would like to save? Yes, I will back all up on CD's, once the job is done! Thank you!
