How to choose a motherboard?
by Guest Don Phillipson- 4 replies

Win98SE meets very nearly all current needs (inc. EMACS for DOS and its DOS printer) and some of my apps are not fully compatible with XP (e.g. Quattro v.8 and Paradox v.7) and I have had 3 hardware breakdowns (dead sound-on- board circuit and two power supplies) -- so I must plan to replace with something equally functional the ASUS P4P800S motherboard, running Win98SE on a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz and 512 Mb RAM. 1. How do I evaluate motherboards for functionality and durability? 2. Drives: most MBs now seem to offer only two or three card slots. My (year 2004) ASUS has six populated by video card, modem, TV receiver, audio card, etc. and I should like t…

Hi, After using Lexar's "FireFly" (1GB) on my Windows 98se computers by downloading the driver from the link below, I took a chance on a Lexar "Secure II Plus" (2GB) that was on sale ($14.95) http://www.lexar.com/drivers/files/jdusb2.zip Well, I was unable to install a driver for "Secure II Plus" JumpDrive in my Windows 98se. On my wife's WinXP computer, no problem of course. I assume that if I knew the VID & PID numbers, I could add that to the .INF file (from jdusb2.zip) and perhaps, that would work? On my wife's WinXP computer, I looked at properties via Device Manager for "Secure II Plus", (which was plugged in), b…

help = can't edit hosts file because it won't let me pick a program.
by Guest SlickRCBD- 16 replies

I've just had something weird pop up. I tried to edit my hosts file, but instead of being asked what program I want to use to open it with, I got a dialog box telling me "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking View and then clicking Folder Options". Something in the registry is probably messed up, how do I fix it so that it goes back to giving me a list of programs so I can click on notepad?

Lexar "FireFly" USB Flash Drive for Windows 98se
by Guest Brad- 3 replies

Hi, I have been using a 1GB Lexar "Jump Drive" USB flash drive ("thumb drive") for a couple years on my Windows 98se computer without any problems. Recently, I decided to buy another Lexar !GB, but nobody sells a Windows 98 version anymore. I don't want a used one so I took a chance on a Lexar "FireFly" 1GB (WinXP/Vista/Mac) and I hope that somehow, I can get it to "work" on my Win98 computer. There are no drivers for "FireFly" at Lexar's web site. I searched the web for about 1/2 hr, and I didn't find a source. Do you know a technique, or a source where I can download the driver, even if it's a Windows XP driver? Thanks …

I recently had to repair file system corruption for two XP users, one with a FAT32 partition, the other with NTFS. Unfortunately I have little experience with XP so I struggled quite a bit. Anyway I discovered that Microsoft's disc repair tools were flawed in several ways. Case #1 ------- The PC with the NTFS partition had an inaccessible registry file, c:\windows\system32\config\system. It couldn't be deleted, copied, or renamed, so the procedure in this MSKB article could not be applied: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 I attempted to run CHKDSK from the repair c…

scanreg
by Guest bobster- 2 replies
I recently discovered that my daily scanreg was not occurring. When I opened in MSDOS mode and did a scanreg /restore I found that the five backups were several weeks old. I made a registry change by adding /autorun after scanreg.exe and moving the scanreg.exe file to C:\Windows and got it to work again but now I have two new problems: (1) Every time I re-boot, scanreg runs so that if I re-boot 5 or more times in one 24 hour period, I have 5 identical files. Previously scanreg only ran the first boot of each day. The also are all identified as not having been started where as in the past, the older ones were sometimes labeled as having "started". (2) Ev…

I had trouble getting the right drivers installed for my Viewsonic LCD. Essentially I ended up booting up the machine with no drivers and Windows installed a Default Monitor. After finally getting the correct drivers installed on my computer the correct drivers where installed but the computer still thinks there's an unknown monitor attached to the machine and keeps recreating the Default Monitor at start-up. How do I fix this false detection of an unknown monitor ?

But the CPU is not new . . .
by Guest Don Phillipson- 4 replies
After fitting a new power supply, this 2.8 GHz PC running Win98SE reports at every boot: "New CPU installed! Please enter Setup . . . " (Defaults are NBG since Win98 counts as a "legacy" OS so hyperthreading must be disabled.) The CPU is original (used since purchase June 2004 with ASUS P4P800S motherboard. We checked the CMOS battery (also original) when replacing the power supply and it tested OK. Why does it (seem to) fail to hold BIOS settings? (I never saw this "New CPU" message before, not even when the unit was actually new.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada)

A faster modem than 56K 1 2
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 25 replies

In the 80's and 90's it seemed like every couple years they came out with a faster modem. I think it's nearly 10 years since they came out with the 56K. Are they ever going to make something faster? Yeah, I know most people are on DSL or some other high speed connection these days, but I live in a rural area and dialup is all I can get. It sure would be nice if they came out with a 112K modem or something like that.

Available memory after start-up
by Guest Graham C- 10 replies

Not really a problem, but an observation. I run TClock which apart from the date and time in the system tray has been configured to show 'available RAM' For a couple of years I've noticed big variations in the amount of free memory available immediately after boot-up. Hence I've just disabled every thing except TClock via MSCONFIG I have 448 Meg of physical RAM. If I clean boot the PC say ten times in a row, then after start-up, approximately: On about six occasions I have 304 Meg of free memory available On about three occasions I have 264 Meg of free memory On one occasion I have 230 Meg of free memory This is 'repeatable', but it seems random…

Anybody installed this (Windows Management Instrumentation 1.5)? And without any problems? No problems or gotchas were mentioned on the MS download site that I could see. Anyways, I found an app that required it I don't know what the base version is on Windows98SE (assuming there is one, and that its even installed). Well, I did see a wmi.dll on this system, but the version number makes no sense (like 5.0).
