by Guest K-man- 1 reply

I have a Gateway CPU it had windows 98se version installed before I dumpped it. I have misplaced my reboot floppy. I tried to download a boot disc download from my other computer ( XP ) to a disc but that didn't work, The Gateway has a CD-Rom drive. I went to the bios screen but I don't know to much about that screen. I really wanted to install windows ME on this Gateway, but at this point I'll just be glad to get the windows 98se version up and running again. Thanks

Where can I get a free website?
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 1 reply

My provider does not have webpages. I'm just looking for a place to post a few photos and my homepage which is just a place to promote a small private non-profit animal shelter, and mostly list the animals up for adoption. I've had this site on both 50megs.com and geocities.com, but they have so much garbage advertising and popups that the site itself gets lost. I have since removed the site from those two. I do not need much space, something like 3 megs is more than enough. I'd prefer to avoid the "blog" type sites, and just maintain a regular website. Free is preferred, but if it's just a few bucks a year, I might consider it. Anyone know of such a site?…

Wireless uploading locks up in Win98SE
by Guest Donald G. Davis- 0 replies

I recently obtained an HP Pavilion a656x computer, VIA chipset and AMD Athlon 3000+ processor, which I've configured with a dual-boot setup of Win98SE and WinXP/SP2. In Win98 it has a puzzling problem with the wireless Internet connection. I'm using an EnGenius EUB-362EXT USB WiFi adapter. My e-mail ISP is a Unix shell account that I access with the TeraTerm Pro terminal program. In Win98SE, I connect reliably to my shell account via TeraTerm (as well as to Web sites via IE). I can download files of any size from my Unix account without a problem. But if I try to *upload* to the remote system any file bigger than about 5 KB, a few thousand b…

Opening Opera web pages on my computer
by Guest Larry- 5 replies
This is sort of a general question in Windows 98, so if this is the wrong group I'm sorry. A while ago I changed the default browser in my Win 98 computer from IE to Opera. At around the same time, I think, all the web pages saved on my computer changed their icon to the Opera icon from the IE icon. But now I see that when I click on one of these saved web pages, it doesn't open the document, it just activates the Opera application. If I hold shift and right click the html document's icon, and choose the Open With dialog box, and choose Opera, the same thing happens: the Opera application gets activated, but the document does not open. However, if I us…

Changing small letters back to proper Capital letters in .doc
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 2 replies

HELP!!!! I have a 40 page .doc story document that is all caps. I wish to change it into regular type print, small letters. However, it's easy to use the format change in Word, but how do I change all the letters that should be capitalized back into caps? Letters like I, or proper nouns, or even the first word of every sentence. Don't tell me to manually change everyone. There must be some easy way to go back and forth between all caps and regular print. What is it? Robert

For some time I have been using a Machine that has suddenly started having problems and is, currently, not functioning. It had a primary and a secondary Hard Disks with a lot of Data that I would like to retrieve from them. The prinmary has the Operating System (W98SE), along with other good stored Data. The Secondary Disk has a lot of saved information and many family photos. Is there an easy way for me to install these disks on another machine and get the info that I would like to save? Yes, I will back all up on CD's, once the job is done! Thank you!

Cleaning up Windows 98
by Guest Tshaw- 6 replies

As I previous submitted in the "Windows 98 updates" thread, my parent's system seems to be a mess. Are there any "Free" downloads out there that you can suggest in helping me get this thing cleaned up SAFELY. For instance, is Spybot good to run for spyware and is AVAST better than AVG as a Virus protection ? I uninstalled their Norton as it was not updated in some time and was using too much resources and seem to be reeking havoc on the system. I also saw a site called CCleaner that does quite a bit. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Again !!

mysterious file E--APPRO.PRI 1 2
by Guest Oliver Walter- 32 replies

I have discovered this mysterious file on my HD: Name: E--APPRO.PRI Size: 0 bytes Created: 05 March 2040 14:33:01 Modified: 04 November 2037 13:35:10 Accessed: 23 February 2008 Its Attributes are ReadOnly and Archive and I cannot change them (error message "Unable to set the attributes for ...") Since the attributes are unchanging, it appears in every incremental backup I make using WinZip. I do not have any LocoScript software (Web search reveals .PRI as a file extension used by LocoScript). As far as I know it's not doing any harm but I'd like to know what it is, what created it, whether I can get rid of it. It's in a folder 4…

Here is what Micro$oft has been up to lately regarding their desire to abide by the rule of law and the respect of the courts. Now explain to me again why we should abide by Macroshaft's EULA's. What a joke - no, what a fraud of a company. Their best years are clearly behind them. -------------------------------------- http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/02/microsoft-slapp.html Microsoft Slapped by EU With $1.35B Fine By Betsy Schiffman February 27, 2008 The European Commission stands to make a tidy profit off Microsoft's objectionable business practices. I had planned to tell you about something great
by Guest mm- 16 replies

Much of this post is written for a win98 audience, but not all of it. I had planned to tell you about something great, about software for win98 that would soon disappear, so you should get it now. But now I'm not sure what to say. I'm talking about free photo arranging and editing software. When developing film, I've been getting a copy put on CD, and this would also apply to digital camera images. I've been getting one roll done at as many different processors as possible. Kodak, Ritz Camera (is that only around here?), Walmart, and any place else that seems to use a different processor, because each processor has its own software on the CD. Mor…

Free Windows XP Registry Cleaner Download
by Guest voujnbwuotkd@yahoo.com- 1 reply

Making use of a good quality registry cleaner is absolutely essential for you to ensure that your computers registry maintains a healthy state of operation. Lets take a look at three simple reasons why registry cleaners are so important. 1. Fix PC Errors The first reason is clearly to fix up your pc registry problems. When you install and remove software from your computer it causes residuals to be left behind on your hard drive which ultimately results in your registry becoming partially corrupted or erroneous. I'm sure the last thing you would want to see is that "Blue Screen of death" when you know that you have to reformat your computer. 2.Money Saving I a…

My Packard Bell Win98 came with MS Works 4.5 pre-installed,and for reasons unknown, some of the functions are no longer working. when I attempt to reinstall it with the setup.exe file, located in the MS Works folder, it ask me to insert the MS Works cdrom. The only disk that I have that came with this pc is a Packard Bell Companion CD disk and the Master Recovery Disk. The Companion CD contains the initial Win98 installation files. I upgraded to Win98 SE (have that CD disk also)sometime ago. Which one of these disk would I go about locating the necessary re-installation file(s) and how would I go about it? I don't want to reinstall the entire system…

Windows 98 updates
by Guest Tshaw- 3 replies
My parents are still using Windows 98 and their system is at a snails-pace, and often freezes up. I started by checking for updates and realized it's been some time since they did this themselves. It showed 13 Critical Updates and 43 Windows 98 SE updates, I know, WOW. Anyways, it downloaded all the updates but will NOT install them. Any reason why, or how to get them installed ? perhaps doing them individually ? Thought I'd ask here before going throught that pain staking process. Thanks for your time.

Spybot Problem - A Workaround
by Guest Nigel Stapley- 7 replies
Some of you may be finding that the latest versions of Spybot S&D (1.5.1 and above) won't run on 98, giving the following error: "Exception EAccessViolation in module SPYBOTSD.EXE at 002E 6098. Access violation at address 006E 609B in module 'SPYBOTSD.EXE'. Read of address FFFFFFFF." Someone on the Spybot forums has come up with a workaround, namely that you start Dr Watson first, *then* run Spybot. It seems to work. Safer-Networking claim that the problem is caused by Windows memory management, but I'm not convinced. Hope this helps. -- Regards Nigel Stapley http://www.judgemental.plus.com <reply-to will bounce>
