Winword has performed....
by Guest Menno Hershberger- 4 replies

Windows 98 SE, Office 2000 Premium, specifically Word. Whether trying to open it directly or by opening a document, it brings up "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." The title bar says "Winword". Details show the error in module Winword.exe. The other office apps work OK. I uninstalled and reinstalled the whole office Suite. No help. I did a repair install of Windows 98. Still no help. The closest I could come in Google was for the error in 98 First Edition. Microsoft had a fix for that but it wouldn't run in SE. This computer has not been on the internet for years. I hooked it up and got all the updates including IE 6.0. …

How do I disable Javascript in outlook express Windows 98se?
by Guest Greg P- 4 replies

How do I disable Javascript in outlook express Windows 98se? For some reason, the other isp think my email is spam? The reason it shown X pop-Js and the other isp filter thinks it is spam. They did recommend disabling java script in the restricted section in Internet explorer. However, there is not an option in Internet explorer to disable java script. Me/XP may have it, but 98se does not have that checkbox. This may also be do to the fact, I have sun java installed instead of msjava. Greg P

What's wrong with these videos?
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 0 replies

I wanted to re-watch a few of the funny Superbowl commercials and save my favorites to my own drive. I wanted to be sure they were in .FLV format, because Media Player seems to always want me to upgrade and do this and do that, and is just plain annoying, and seems to be getting worse every year. I dont use Quicktime or RealPlayer, both which seem to be fading. Anyhow, right after the game I went to YouTube.com and found it had a message saying it was experiencing problems (probably overloaded due to the Superbowl ending). So, I went to ifilm.com, knowing they always have the SB commercials. The first commercial I went for was the Budweiser Clydesdale h…

Windows 7, why would you buy VISTA
by Guest MEB- 10 replies
Well, that didn't take very long did it. Word is that Microsoft MAY release Windows 7 early, apparently making VISTA a VERY poor choice for potential upgraders. Yep, dig in your pocket again for the very newest Microsoft glamour OS... and don't forget to buy all new peripherals and software AGAIN.... http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1120 -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com _________

next firewall test - Jetico 1 [last 98 version]
by Guest MEB- 13 replies
Thought the next firewall I would try would be Jetico. Seems to have been fairly highly rated, and apparently provides some additional 'features' which may be of use in the 9X environment [much more configurable rules than, say, Kerio, and supposedly rates higher than ZA]. A pre-test/installation was done for a basic 'feel' of the application, and the installation failed to allow Internet access. Haven't finished the background documentation/threads/web sites yet but: Prior to the actual test, I thought I might query for installation/setup pointers. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com _________

Removing hardware from Win98
by Guest karenmarybrown- 1 reply

For the past several months I have been trying to remove an NEC Multimedia keyboard from my computer. I have tried everything I can think of, and also joined forums to try to find someone with the same problem. Everytime you remove it from the system (even having gone into the registry and startup menu) whenever you switch back on it comes up 'windows has found new hardware'. Anyone have similar problems? karenmarybrown --

OT: "Silent" fans !
by Guest RJK- 4 replies

There must be some new definition of the word "silent" that I'm not yet familiar with ! ....built gorgeous, (though I say it myself ...nobody else will), skt 940 based midi tower out of the cheapest/half decent spec. parts I could find, and put a 80mm to 70/60mm? adapter on old spare AM2 heatsink - and an AKASA 4 blue LED "open frame" 4 wire PWM fan on it :-) ....Prod pwr up button - JET WHINE ...for a couple of seconds until bios gets going and initiates target fan speed to "slow" whereupon aforementioned cpu fan decreases speed to a much reduced whine but, similar to that of a vacuum cleaner. ....oh well better than a jet fighter I s'pose. Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a
by Guest bobster- 10 replies

I have a good performing Windows 98SE machine with the following characteristics: PII 300 MHz processor 324 megs ram 2 - 20 GHz hard drives, each about 50% full All updates from MS Windows update site ZA AVAST! Host file SpywareBlaster AdAware Lot of Apps Comcast cable The machine works fine and is free of spyware and viruses. I would like to keep 98SE as long as possible. Except for the speed limitation and poor performance on videos, it suits my needs quite well. My question: I have read quite a lot about an unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a, a free download touted to greatly improve the performance of 98SE. Should I try it out? Wh…

Everyday. You're hunched at the computer, flicking the keys with the greatest of ease - or, like me, poking each stroke with the speed of a...umm...well, it DID rhyme! Everyday. You're mesmerized for hours by the wonders of Internet business - you market, you negotiate, you design, you submit, you research, you chat...a lot... Everyday. Enthralled and empowered by your cyber-independence, you plan and scheme, plot and dream. While life in the REAL world goes on around you... "Hey Mom, can I have lunch now?? It's three o'clock!!" "Huh? Whaa...yeah, five minutes, honey...lessee, click here..." Funny how the daily grind hasn't ground to a halt…
