internet properties freezes
by Guest bob urz- 2 replies

I have a windows 98 machine that i have used for years. Internet has been dial up until recently. i installed a network card and put it on a router. now, the dial up won't work. It shows its connected in the tray, but the browser won't load. i went to control panel and brought up Internet options. the window opens with 7 tabs on the top. all the tabs work EXCEPT the tab i need, the connections tab. when i go to connections, the screen remains on the last selected tab and the Internet properties window freezes. Is there a way to fix this short of re installing windows? Bob

help fixing problem

For some reason, for the last month whenever I click on "Open containing folder" in the find file dialog box, or when I get properties of a shortcut and click "Find target", or anything that would normally open up a window containing files, nothing happens. Also, the system tray icon for Personal Web Sharing is failing to appear. PWS still works in the limited capacity I use it to occasionally share files with an old powermac (I haven't tried to use it for anything else), but it's annoying to have to go drill down through the start menu and open up the Personal Web manager to turn it on and off instead of just being able to do it instantly from the star…

PE-Shield is hidden
by Guest ms- 0 replies

Recently I tried to run a small noinstall utility, gave a error message: invalid page fault in MSVCRT.dll at 0167:78009465, had to key Close on the error screen 9 times before it closed. Then, in Taskbar, PE Shield opened for the first time with error screen: can't access comdlg32.dll". Closed that. I only get these messages, at this point (don't use this machine every day) on this one utility, which normally works fine. As the files could be corrupted, in DOS I replaced those 2 files from a good source. I also replaced the utility with another copy, same result. Search does not turn up any reference to PE-Shield. Two registry tools show no entry…

code fragment _delis
by Guest Don Phillipson- 1 reply

Does anyone know what Windows code fragment _delis is supposed to do? It may belong to OE (v.6.00.2800.1123) or perhaps Winfax v.8 (just reinstalled, not yet patched/updated) was associated with an odd system hang (revealed by Ctl Alt Del but would not unload on command) then total system hang ("Cannot write to C: when nothing was supposed to be writing to C.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada)

I upgraded 98 to IE6
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 23 replies

I have used Win98 since it first came on the market. Years ago, when they first came out with IE6, I installed it and my system got really unstable. I finally formatted and reinstalled Win98se. Ever since I have never upgraded IE beyond 5.5. I have had many people tell me that IE6 has now been repaired, so I just finally installed it again. I must say it's working flawlessly, at least so far. At the same time I dont see anything different from ver5.5. Anyhow, it now says I have Version 6.0.2800.1106 (why so many numbers?). I am trying to find out two things. 1. Is this the last version, or is there an upgrade (where to get it if needed?). 2. One featur…

Media Player 9 Playback
by Guest Charles Bennett- 10 replies

Recently I attemped to play a music cd. A popup appeared and said "unable to play, settings have been changed by another program". I recently installed both VLC for Windows and the FLV player for YouTube Videos. I figured they were the best suspects. Unistalled, and removed all references from the Registry. Went to Tools-Options and rechecked "music cd playback". Still, no good. Back to Options and "music cd playback", un-checked. Several more times same story. Checked all I can think up browsing thru system. Apparantly there is a program or setting I'm missing still active which turns off the playback option. Grateful for any suggestions. -- --------…

Strange error messages
by Guest Henry- 20 replies

I tried to install a program on a Win98SE computer. The program is essentially a GUI to telnet into sites. When I installed it, it didn't seem to install; that is I couldn't find any name or icon to click on to launch the program. Unfortunately, it wiped out my wireless connection, and Avast. I tried to reinstall Avast to no avail. I ran WinDoctor, I went to regedit and deleted all references to the program, I couldn't find it in Add/Remove programs so I deleted the couple of files it put in the Windows directory, I deleted Avast with Add/Remove, and then I did a defrag. I got a brand new download of Avast and tried to install it. It got almos…

I have some doubt regarding the licence. that is.. the USER means the PERSON who use the computer. and the SOFTWARE means the OS/APPLICATION. company means the company who provide the SOFTWARE may be MICROSOFT / NOVEL or any body. the SOFTWARE is a intelctual property of the COMPANY. if any USER want the SOFTWARE, the USER have to pay a amount to COMPANY, what known as price of the software product and USER get rights to use the SOFTWARE.called as LICENCE. my doubt is.. 1) what is the rights the user gets when s(he) pays for it.? 2) dose the user get ownership over the SOFTWARE ? Generic Memory Device Drivers?
by Guest Davej- 9 replies
Have been wanting to add some flash memory space to my old Thinkpad but my last two attempts have run into the driver problem. Bought a Lexar 2GB USB thumbdrive -- but no Win98 driver is available. Bought a 4GB Kingston CompactFlash card for use with my Dazzle CF card adapter -- but it also demands a Win98 driver. I'm sure there isn't one. Some time back I tried to install a "generic" USB memory-device driver -- but did not have any success. How many people are successfully using generic flash memory drivers? Thanks.
