by Guest allanc- 5 replies
One of my clients is running a dual boot XP PRO and Windows 98 computer. The PC used to have 256 Mb of RAM and there were no issues except the computer ran slow. In order to speed up the computer, I installed a total of 2 Gb of RAM. Now, XP PRO is much faster. However, according to the client, when he boots into Windows 98 the following is displayed: HiMem testing Insufficient memory to run Windows 98 All assistance is appreciated.

This is most peculiar, posted a few replies to the 'Yikes and yowsers' thread, which came through and then replies to PCR and Bill's posts (that didn't show yesterday) with the subject line changed slightly to reflect thus, they didn't come through. Can see the PCR-Bill subject line changed posts when I go to google groups to look (no, no, no not post!) but they don't show in outlook express !! perplexedpebble B-(

When I plugged a USB drive into the USB port on my Win2K machine, I instantly had a new drive! But on my Win98se machine, on bootup I'm informed that it found "new hardware" and I'm given the opportunity to install the driver for it. (I ain't got one.) Any suggestions? MSDXM.OCX - invalid page fault
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 7 replies
I'm experiencing invalid page faults associated with MSDXM.OCX in the Windows\System directory. My file version is 6.4.09.1120. This file is the "Windows Media Player 2 ActiveX Control". MSDXM OCX 843,804 09-05-01 8:00p MSDXM.OCX The program that is generating these faults is in development and I'm testing it in Win98SE. FWIW, my WMP version is 9.00.00.2980 according to the file properties of wmplayer.exe, but the Help-About screen shows 9.00.00.3008. <shrug> Is it possible that I have the wrong version of the subject file? - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

Dang XP anyway...
by Guest dadiOH- 15 replies

I need to set up a Win98/XP dual boot, gotta buy an XP version. I have no need for the extended features of XP Pro so it will be XP Home. I am sure this has been answered before so please forgive my questions... 1. Since I have Win98, can WinXP Home UPGRADE be used for a clean (total) install to a different, primary, active partition (on the same drive)? 2. Any advantage one way or the other of an upgrade version vs non-upgrade OEM version? My main concern at the moment is whether to purchase an upgrade or OEM version. Full retail is out of the running. Thanks. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help …

Editing Windows .hlp files
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 5 replies

I need to edit/translate a Russian language .hlp file. Does anyone know of a suitable freeware help file editor that runs under Windows 98? Is it even possible to do this? I'd rather not re-create the help file from scratch as the original has some embedded graphics. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

Display Settings
by Guest Beau- 4 replies

I just reinstalled windows 98 SE on my Dell Latitude CP Laptop and my display doesn't even fill up half the screen. My display settings are stuck at either 2 or 16 Colors and 640 X 480. I can't find the drivers on Dell. I guess it came with plain old 98 and when I reinstalled I put 98 SE on it don't know if that matters but I sure can't figure it out. Any clues??

digital to analog
by Guest Stan- 4 replies
I posted this on Multimedia board but haven't gotten a response. I'm working on a friends 98 SE sys. The HD went bad. I've found drivers for all the Hardware including the cd rom but the sound card wants to play in digital mode and WMP says it encountered a problem trying to play in digital mode.......click OKAY to switch to analog mode. But clicking OK doesn't make the change. I have another 98SE system with a different sound card that does the same thing and after installing the sound card software I can change it from digital to analog. However I don't have the software for the sys. I'm working on (owner doesn't have it). It's a Riptide sound/modem car…

1782- Disk Controller Failure 1 2
by Guest ms- 40 replies
- 1.5k views
I'm using a P166 that was in an earlier thread as a test machine. I have connected a series of used small hard drives to check their status. When sucessful, first get Setup screen, auto detect the hard drive, then reboot with a W98 boot disk, fdisk, then format. Having success with 4 different drives, the motherboard, power cable, data cable all are OK. But 2 drives gave initially 1782 Disk Controller Failure. I searched, find that if above items are ok, maybe the master/slave setting may cause this error. One drive had a diagram, so it gave the error when set for Master. The other, Western Digital 31000, saved a data page but not sure of t…

Badly need help with saving WMV stream
by Guest jimtester@nomail.com- 6 replies

I think I have spent 3 full days trying to save these online Media Player streams. I thought it would be easy to copy it from my IE cache file. I found the files wnding with .DAT. They do not play in Media Player. I am using Media Player 9 on Win98se. I thought I could use Firefox and possibly save them as a FLV. I forgot Firefox does not even recognise or play Media Player files. Opera does not recognise the either. I googled and read many websites. I downloaded and tried a thing called VLC Media Player. That program is way over my head as far as understanding it, and about all it did was steal my file associations from Winamp for audio files. I f…

Choppy video
by Guest bobster- 11 replies

My Granddaughter sends me videos on MySpace and YouTube and they appear broken up and choppy, both the video and audio. Since I have a broadband (4-5 meg) cable connection, I'm sure the problem is not limited by my ISP. I think it might be my computer. Should I be able to get smooth video performance on my old dog or is it incapable because of its limitations. Here are its specs: P11 300 MHz processor 324 megs of ram 32 meg video card Windows 98SE Some videos play reasonably smoothly, while others, like above, do not. Is there something that I could do to improve my video performance or should I just give in and buy a new XP or Vista computer?

Adobe Reader issues
by Guest Angel- 24 replies

Happy New Year everyone!! My question: I cannot use Adobe 6.01 on that old small computer. It keeps coming up with an Illegal Operation pop up. I do have Adobe 3.02 on it because I got that off my Office 97 disk. I tried to get the Adobe Reader from the Adobe site but all they have for Windows 98SE is the Adobe 6.01. Nothing in between the 3.02 and 6.01. I went up to the http://www.oldversions.com and tried to download 5.05 from there but it kept freezing up. When I did the 3 finger solute, it told me that http://www.oldversions.com was not responding. I was going too try to get the download from http://www.oldversion.com to my desktop that has the DSL …

Hi, My computer has Windows 98se. I have a folder with several .FLV files I have collected from YouTube. I am frustrated trying to find a GOOD YouTube FLV file(s) converter to convert those .FLV files to either AVI or MPG format so I can play them on my older Windows 95 computers. I can view these .FLV files using a FLV player just fine on my Windows 98 computer, but I gave up trying to find a FLV player that works in Windows 95. If you have Windows 98 and used a FLV converter several times without any problems, please tell me the name and where you downloaded it. Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your pas…

As a long time loyal Windows 98 SE user, I have decided to purchase a new-to-me computer with Windows XP preloaded on it. I don't, however, see a Windows XP forum like this one. The only ones under Windows XP are General Beta and Start - Help and Support Feature Beta. They don't seem to apply to me. Where is the Windows XP forum? Thanks!
