best LCD monitor(s) to buy - please help 1 2
by Guest Adam- 36 replies
- 2.3k views
Not sure what's the best newsgroup for this topic so here goes ... I'm thinking about replacing my ViewSonic P815 monitor from CRT to LCD. I'm always on the computer (working) so I need a nice setup. So far, I've found good reviews on the following LCD monitors ... 1) Samsung T220 Black/Red 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor 2) Dell SP2208WFP Silver 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor However, a dual monitor setup would be nice if the price is right. Not sure what's the best size for this setup though. I'm thinking of a dual 19"-20" LCD monitor setup since a dual 21"-22" LCD monitor setup might be too much? Also, some widescreen LCD monitors can be rotated from la…

Windows 3.x program wont work on Win98 1 2
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 36 replies

I have a really great program that I used to use for special effects on a project that I do. For some reason, this program will not work on Win98se. What's really puzzling is that it gives me an "Out of Memory" error. Well, it used to run just fine on a 386 computer with 16 megs of Ram and Windows for Workgroups 3.11. I now run a pentium III 1ghz, with 512M ram, and Win98se. So, I know it's not a lack of memory, and I tried it with nothing else running, not even startup programs. Obviously, there is something about this program that dont get along with Win98. Aside from running Win3.11 on an old computer, I'd like to find a workaround to run it on Win98.…

Starting your PC without the front panel power button 1 2

I'd like to know how to start up my PC without the front panel power button assembly because my PC won't start or fire up. Nothing happens when I hit the power button. The power supply works, so I figure it might be the power button assembly that's the problem. I'm using a process of elimination to do this and the power button assembly is next on the process of elimination. Thanks, attilathehun1 -- attilathehun1

Nvidia Driver Shutdown Problem 1 2
by Guest Tamiami- 36 replies
- 2.1k views
Greetings, I recently purchased a BFG Nvidia 7800GS AGP card and since installing the drivers (version 82.16, allegedly for 98SE) the machine refuses to shutdown properly. Upon deleting the driver package, it shuts down perfectly. The shutdown patch has been applied. BFG is stumped and said they are referring the issue to Nvidia and that's the last I heard from them. Is there driver release software that would assist 98 in shutting down? Maybe a batch file? EnditAll doesn't help. And be sure to avoid anything from BFG. -- STOP using Google NOW! DSL support 1 2
by Guest Tiffany S.- 35 replies

I just signed up for dsl through AT&T. The rep insisted that it worked with win98se. However, when I tried to load the setup cd, the first popup acknowledged that I had win98se, but that I needed xp or vista. The label on the cd said that it was good for Windows, but it did not indicate the version. Have we finally gotten to the point that we Windows 98 holdouts are defeated? That the general phrase "works with the windows operating sysyem" no longer includes 98se?

I know that this post does not belong here but I have no choice this is the only place I will get an answer. I have no Ad-aware SE, since December 31, 2007 you can not get definition updates and they tell you to get Ad-Aware 2007, but it seems that it does not support Windows 98, and I have Windows 98. Does anybody know of a solution? Sol

Size of hard disk question 1 2
by Guest Adrian- 35 replies

Are there any limits to the size of the hard disk I can run on a W98SE box? When formatting a hard disk, can I simply use the format utility provided by W98, or do I have to do special things to do with FAT etc. Thank you, Adrian.

Will 768MB RAM be OK, even in Safe Mode? 1 2
by Guest Angus Rodgers- 34 replies
- 2.4k views
I've recently doubled my system RAM to 512MB, with no problems. There's room on my motherboard (ASUS A7V8X-X) to plug in another similar 256MB module. (I don't think I want to add 512MB merely because it might be useful when/if I get around to dual-booting some version of Linux. A total of 768MB ought to be enough. I would rather not have to fiddle with MaxPhysPage=39999 - or what- ever else would be needed if I had 1GB or more memory - unless it is absolutely necessary, in which case I will think again.) In system.ini at the moment, I have MaxFileCache=163840 (160MB), and (presumably much less important) MinFileCache=8192 (8MB). From what little I've …

Application Interface Icons Appear Corrupt 1 2
by Guest arnymars- 34 replies
- 1.8k views
Hello, On my Win98SE PC some Applications at startup show inclear Icons in their Toolbars and all around user interface. Icons pictures are not rendered properly (unclear), while picture files open by the same applications are shown properly. It happens time to time with many applications in random order, and icons that were not shown properly one time, the next startup of the same application may be clear. More, part of the icons on the same application toolbar may be clear, but the rest is not. I read, system icon issues may be related to insufficient system Icon Cash File size. But my problem is with application icons, not system. NOD32 shows no viru…

Hi, I am going to ask for help without being able to give you too much information. I have a friend who has an old computer with Win 98 and he can't open IE. He tells me that when he tries to open it, it gives him and error message that says it needs to shut down because of some conflict problem and then it quits. Any suggestions on where he/I can start to get IE working again. If not, I can get more detailed info tomorrow. Thanks, Tom

Help! I'm getting the notorious "Type in the name of the Command Interpretor" error message and it appears that my HD is missing the Comman.com (and maybe other files) so that my laptop won't boot up. Can anyone send me a Windows 98 boot up disk? I would hate to junk this laptop. It's not the greatest but it does have a lot of PM type software on it. Email me at jim.flack@gmail.com. Thanks!

Hello, I am trying to fix my dad's computer for him. He is running Windows 98 SE on an IDE WD 80 GB HD. The computer will freeze up on him at all different times. It can be on startup, after running for a short while or after a long while, but does it everyday. Once it starts on that day it does it a lot. Here is what I did so far: Replaced hard drive- my dad's request. Replaced cable for hard drive Replaced cooling fan in power box, original fan made awful noise at startup. Added extra cooling fan; mid tower. After replacing the hard drive I ran the Manufacture's diagnostics software on the old drive, found no errors. I als…

Changing Dual Boot 1 2
by Guest Buffalo- 32 replies
Can I change my dual boot Win90Se-Win2000Pro to a dual boot Win98SE-WinXP? The reason I'm asking is that some of my games and newer vid cards require XP as the minimum, as do other programs. If so, what are the steps? Perhaps I would be better off wiping my HDD (after creating an image by Ghost) and then proceeding????? If I do a format, which OS should be installed first? Hell, I am just considering this. :)

Installation questions - 500GB Hard Drive 1 2
by Guest BeBopaLula- 32 replies

Hello. A question about installing and partitioning a 500 GB Western Digital ATA/IDE Hard Drive in a basic W98se equipped system (plus some). Details below. I also wish to apologize in advance for the long post, the myriad questions - most of which are probably ignorant - as well as my being so uneducated in such matters. Platform Configuration: Dell Optiplex GX240 2 - ATA/IDE Hard Drives - each having a separate OS. HD-D 1 - W98se / HD-D 2 - WinXP Pro. Both FAT32. Boots into the respective OS using a 3rd party Boot Manager - BootUS. (My Dell Optiplex A05 BIOS - the latest and final - will only permit booting off the Primary Drive Volume as physically …

mysterious file E--APPRO.PRI 1 2
by Guest Oliver Walter- 32 replies

I have discovered this mysterious file on my HD: Name: E--APPRO.PRI Size: 0 bytes Created: 05 March 2040 14:33:01 Modified: 04 November 2037 13:35:10 Accessed: 23 February 2008 Its Attributes are ReadOnly and Archive and I cannot change them (error message "Unable to set the attributes for ...") Since the attributes are unchanging, it appears in every incremental backup I make using WinZip. I do not have any LocoScript software (Web search reveals .PRI as a file extension used by LocoScript). As far as I know it's not doing any harm but I'd like to know what it is, what created it, whether I can get rid of it. It's in a folder 4…

Hi everyone, I was on the 'net and I received this pop up. It said to the effect Error alert. I think that is what it said at the top. A window popped up wanting me to download a registry cleaner. I click the close and then a gray box that wanted me download a program with an ok button and all the buttons at top were grayed out you could not close. I was not about to do it. I then did the Ctrl-Alt-Del and got it out that way. This happened a couple of times in 2 days. I had just opened a newsletter from a site I trusted and went to the website and shortly got that. I then unsubscribed the newsletter. Did it come from the website or someplace else? What else …

I recently had to repair file system corruption for two XP users, one with a FAT32 partition, the other with NTFS. Unfortunately I have little experience with XP so I struggled quite a bit. Anyway I discovered that Microsoft's disc repair tools were flawed in several ways. Case #1 ------- The PC with the NTFS partition had an inaccessible registry file, c:\windows\system32\config\system. It couldn't be deleted, copied, or renamed, so the procedure in this MSKB article could not be applied: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 I attempted to run CHKDSK from the repair c…

Burning CD's is a HUGE HASSLE 1 2
by Guest jameswalker7@invalid.com- 31 replies

What ever happened to the good old days where all that was needed was a simple floppy disk, and files could be dragged and dropped from Windows, or use the "copy command" from dos. After not even owning a CD player for years, I just bought an external Iomega ZipCD player and recorder, connected to my USB port. After a little hassle getting the drivers installed, it works fine, and I was able to install a few CD's that have been sitting on the shelf for the last several years. On the other hand, I have never burned a CD or DVD or anything. This drive came with Iomega Hot Burn Pro. I have played with it, but have not yet purchased any blanks. One thing I…

When I open "my computer", I see a partition labeled E. The total size is blank. The free space is blank. I tryed to access E but the message "E is not accessable' appeared. I am certain that E does not actually exist so I would like to delete it. I tryed deleting various drivers in the Device Manager window but that did not solve the problem. How can I delete partition E?
