broken Favorites folder icon!
by Guest none- 5 replies

Don't know how it happened. Noticed one day the 'Favorites' folder icon in Explorer is not what is used to be. Now it is white with a folded (dog-ear) tab and a MS logo. Anybody know how to get it back to a yellow folder (and I think with a blue star)? Thanks

Floppy Disk Drive
by Guest DaffyD®- 13 replies

I posted a question in the win98disks.general newsgroup about it being an appropriate forum to address floppy disk drive issues. Since the last post for that group was 12/6, I'd like to ask it here since this is a more active ng. I run Win 98SE, but the problem I have is with the installation of the drive itself. I've posted the issue in other ngs but have never gotten an answer which solved the problem. I've also googled for an answer but came up with nada. Is this an issue I could post here? Thanks. -- { : [|]=( DaffyD® If I knew where I was I'd be there now.

Fiesta Recently I have been constantly getting the following IE6 error message: IEXPLORE.EXE-Application Error The instruction at 0x10003dfb "referenced memory at 0x006e0069". The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program Click on cancel to debug the program When this occurs I have the choice of either logging off or rebooting. Since I am not an expert in interpreting the debug messages, I can not locate the cause from that source. Can anyone help me. Thanks.

Sound card 4Core Dual VSTA
by Guest Peter Keller- 0 replies
Has anyone been able to get a sound card working on a 4CORE DUAL VSTA motherboard (in win98se)? The cards I have available are a Trident 4DWave and a SoundBlaster PCI. Both worked fine on four other boards. The SB PCI works fine in Windows 2000. On the 4CORE DUAL VSTA, both cards trigger the win98 Automatic Skip Driver. ASD gives the following reference for SB PCI not working: 'PCI\VEN_1274&DEV_5880&SUBSYS_80011274&REV_04\209900' Not sure what this means. ASD suggests that I update the drivers or change the resources that the device is using. I don't think this is the solution. Since both of my sound cards are oldish (pre-98 really), I …

Win98, then WinXP, and now only Vista??
by Guest Bill in Co.- 19 replies

Well, this is a bit OT, and I'm still a die hard Win98SE fan, but.... I was just checking this out, and it looks like even WinXP is getting harder to find on a new system these days. (For example, it seems Circuit City sells their systems only with Vista now). It appears time is running out. I checked the Dell site, and apparently you can still get a new system with WinXP, (but probably not for much longer, I bet). Which is a bit scary. WHO wants Vista????? (At least XP would be tolerable!). I'm almost tempted to get another computer with XP - before that is too late. I believe you can get a new Dell Inspiron, with WinXP, for about $1000,…

I've Googled and done some looking on the net, but have not really found a definitive answer. I've downloaded and installed VLC on both my PC and MacBook. The Apple version runs with no problem. With Win 98 SE it appears to d/l & install ok. However I keep receiving this error message, with AVI and WMV clips. Error loading DLL 'unicows.dll'l, program will now terminate. Can anyone point me to the right source material to correct this? Thank you..... -- -------------------- http://NewsReader.Com/ -------------------- Usenet Newsgroup Service $9.95/Month 30GB

Upgrade from Win. 98 to Vista?
by Guest Jeff Turner- 6 replies
I have been using Windows 98 for over 10 years. I like it and have used it with my flat-bed scanner (10 years old) and my Digital Camera (10 years old). Sooner rather than later my computer will die, and I will be faced with, maybe forced into, an upgrade to Vista. I am concerned about that? I have thousands of .doc files, and .tif files, on my hard drive that I must be able to keep and use. The .tif files were prepared using an imaging program in Win. 98. Can someone tell me what will happen to me when I have to upgrade to Vista? What will happen with my .doc (prepared with Word '97), and my .tif files? Thank You. Jeff Turner Gates…

ADSL slower on Win98SE than on Win2K?
by Guest Igor- 11 replies
I recently installed Windows 2000 (with SP4) on my PC in a dual-boot configuration with Windows 98SE. I have an ADSL high-speed Internet connection with promised speeds of "up to 5 Mb/s." I have found, using online speed tests, that the speed rarely goes above 650 Kb/s under Windows 98SE. With everything else but the OS being identical (e.g. hardware, browsers, etc.), I can regularly attain speeds of over 3000 Kb/s under Windows 2000. I'm trying to figure out if this is a limitation of Windows 98SE, or if this issue is particular to my setup. Anyone else experience this? -- "When the words of freedom are used to destroy freedom, it's time for a revolutio…

Installation questions - 500GB Hard Drive 1 2
by Guest BeBopaLula- 32 replies

Hello. A question about installing and partitioning a 500 GB Western Digital ATA/IDE Hard Drive in a basic W98se equipped system (plus some). Details below. I also wish to apologize in advance for the long post, the myriad questions - most of which are probably ignorant - as well as my being so uneducated in such matters. Platform Configuration: Dell Optiplex GX240 2 - ATA/IDE Hard Drives - each having a separate OS. HD-D 1 - W98se / HD-D 2 - WinXP Pro. Both FAT32. Boots into the respective OS using a 3rd party Boot Manager - BootUS. (My Dell Optiplex A05 BIOS - the latest and final - will only permit booting off the Primary Drive Volume as physically …

AVAST - questions and queries - AVG comparison
by Guest MEB- 20 replies
As I previously noted, I was re-testing AVAST for a comparison between AVG and its functions. I'll start with a simple query: 1. Is there some web site which has a comprehensive setup description covering all aspects of a basic AVAST configuration setup? Yes, I did the normal searches both on AVAST home site, and via the web, but what I found seems to be segments, or incomplete information. Of course one can contact various forums, but then one is relegated to reading potentially conflicting, or un-related information. 2. For a preliminary review of one differential between the two programs, I think I can make a somewhat stark contrast. The issue rel…

windows media player 9.0
by Guest Øivind Reinemo- 1 reply

hi, Merry Xmas to u all. I downloaded and installed Windows Media Player for Win98. I got the BSOD (blue screen of death) during or rather at the very end of the installation process, but when I restarted I found to my surprise that the media player worked ok. The only discrepancy I have noticed is that the program does not appear on the add/remove tool in the control panel. Is this serious? How do I uninstall the program in the future? My OS is win98 SE. Your Dream Home In France - Moving Money To France
by Guest prqview200@yahoo.com.tw- 0 replies
- 265 views
If you already live in France, or intend to finance your property purchase from equity in your UK home, chances are you'll want to move some money abroad. Transfering money from the UK to France requires someone to handle the transfer on your behalf and usually your bank will be happy to assist you but beware, though convenient and familiar, your transfer might cost you more than it needs to. Instead you may be better contacting a currency house, a company which exists specifically for the purpose of moving money; both large single amounts for your property purchase, and lower regular amounts such as a monthly pension. Transferring money via a currency ho…

Will Doubtlessly Be Reaping In Old Age What We
by Guest rota6566@yahoo.com.tw- 0 replies

The time is 11:20 in the morning. My grandfather and I had just come back thirty minutes ago from our regular morning walk in the neighborhood. We are yet to eat lunch in a little while. As usual, only the two of us are left in the house. I'm presently listening to a CD containing Christian New Wave songs a new friend of mine from North York, Ontario (another Canadian province), has sent me--which arrived in the mail this morning. Grandfather is on his ground-level bed, sewing something, whiling his time, curing his own boredom. I feel more comfortable and relaxed in situations like this--moments when my grandfather and I are the only souls in the house, reg…
