This is an old Compaq Presario 8702 P166, in a recent thread, converted from W95 to DOS. I want to get into BIOS setup. Compaq data says: ----- "NOTE: On certain Compaq Presario PCs (prior to 2002) press the F10 key at the logo screen to enter setup." ----- Pressing F10, F1, Escape, (this from other Compaq data). It continues to boot to a DOS C prompt. Can't get into Setup. Advice? ms

My daughter has a computer that runs Windows 98SE. We started it the other day and all we got on the monitor was a box right in the center that says "Out of Range" V: (numbers) and H: (numbers) and then it asks if the PC perameters are correct. I think it is trying to tell me that it is done for but any suggestions. I can't get by this screen at all to even get into the hard drive for info. If I press the Escape key it puts the monitor in the standby mode but the tower still does its thing. Rachel

Quicktime problems with Firefox and Win98
by Guest * * Chas- 11 replies

I have a very stable fully updated Win98 system that I've been running since 1999. Several years ago I had to update IE from 5.5 to 6 to access some online services that I use. IE 5.5 worked perfect for years. IE6 had a bunch of annoying little glitches such as printing problems so I installed Firefox and it's worked great for several years. After one of the frequent Firefox updates I now get a QuickTime broken link icon for most videos in Firefox: YouTube for example plus the startup and instructional videos in many web sites. I'm running Firefox 3.0.0.11. I've reinstalled QuickTime and all of the Adobe Flash & Shockwave updates still no joy. Quick…

Sometimes the "size on disk" of a file is much larger than the "size" of the file. How can that be avoided? In other words, what should be done so the "size on disk" is about the same as the "size"?

Re: 250 GB drives - please help Adam wrote: > Not sure what the potential problem is with ScanDisk+Win98SE+ > Big Drives First, understand that there are 2 scandisk's. One is the DOS scandisk (scandisk.exe) and the second is Windows scandisk (scandskw.exe + diskmaint.dll). Then there is defrag (AKA windows defrag). The windows scandisk and defrag have problems when the number of allocation units (AKA clusters) exceeds a certain number (I think it's 4 million but it could be 6 or 8 million). The windows ME versions of scandisk and defrag have a higher limit (and most people recommend you use them on your win-98 system for other reasons anyways)…

DOS question 1 2

P166, had W95, then formatted with a W95 boot disk. Loaded several DOS programs, normal folder situation. On bootup, I kept seeing a W95 logo, starting W95, then it booted to a C prompt. There was a small partition, non-DOS. Did Fdisk and removed the non-DOS partition. Ran Fdisk again, now only C, no partitions. empty. Reformatted using the W95 boot disk. Since I will be working with old DOS games intended for DOS 6, tried to reformat with a DOS 6.22 boot disk, message "wrong DOS version". Tried to install Dos 6.22, it's method is leave the boot disk in and reboot, install will start. Did that, "missing system disk, insert..." with the DOS 6 boot …

A problem using Bing
by Guest ms- 22 replies

My intent is to format a P166 for use as a DOS computer. It had W95, a prior uninstall of Norton AV caused error screens so I had to format. When I tried a W95 boot disk, format, got error: insufficient memory to load system files. I then ran Bing, it did format, I rebooted with the W95 boot disk, at A:, entered C:, no C:. Ran Bing again, named the drive C, but see legend that the drive is not available to anything as it has Bing installed on it. Then rebooted with W95 boot disk, message: can't find Bing, assume it wants the Bing boot disk. I need to wind up with a C drive for DOS, and have created something else. Advice? ms

I have a HP Pavilion 6511 Desktop with the following: 1. Motherboard - P5S-VM, Supplier -ASUS 2. Base Processor and Speed - 500 MHz AMD K6-2 with 3D Now! technology 3. Chipset - SiS 530 4. Memory - 64 MB SDRAM standard, Speed 100 MHz synchronous. As it has Three 168-pin DIMM sockets and can take upto 3X128 MB, I had added two more viz., a 64 and a 128 MB RAM's into the two vacant sockets. The unit was working well until recently when it had memory problems which I had ascertained using "Windows Memory Diagnostics". I wanted to verify my diagnosis and so I gave it to a service centre. Hi there! I have to recycle 20 old PCs (from PII to PIV, 64Mo RAM at least each) into barcode readers. The society I have my mission in wants to have W98se on them (for many PCs won't be supporting more than this, plus we need USB to work for WiFi keys). I have set up a prototype wich is perfectly working for it's supposed to do. Here's the prototype description: Win98se + MSInstaller2.0 + IE5.5 + DotNet2.0 + barcode reader application (NOO_RemotePC, if anyone knows this) + WiFi USB drivers Since the company does NOT want users to do anything BUT barcode, I used POLEDIT to set up few restrictions (well, when I'm saying few that very much "understate…

Win98 Upgrades Service Pack & IE6
by Guest georget@unlisted.com- 1 reply

I just downloaded the Win98 Service pack (complete) that someone put together from all the MS Upgrades. When MS still had these upgrades on their website I got most of them. Maybe all of them, but I really dont know if I got all of them or not, since they used to come a little here and a little there. Is it safe to just run the whole thing now? Also, I got the complete installer for IE6. I never upgraded to IE6 and have always run 5.5. I have always been afraid of IE6 because of the problems it had, but I heard the earlier problems were solved, so I guess I'll give it a try. I was wondering if it has the "go back" option, if it fails (go back to the pr…

First off i'm a novice at this.
