safe mode

Hello, I have an Ethernet connection to xdsl High Speed Internet. The Primary Network Logon is set at Windows Logon, such that when users logon on to windows they are logging on to network at the same time. Since there is no Network Logon with this configuration and many online AS and AV and FW that make system calls to the disk, I am having problems running the maintenance programs like Scandisk and Defragmentation. If I drop the FW while online the system will get hammered. If I go into Safe Mode, does this disconnect the machine from the internet so I can run these programs?

Can't Install MicrSoft Bookshelf 94
by Guest PSRumbagh- 2 replies

I have an old desktop PC (Pentium II, 300 MHz, circa 1997) running Win98 Second Edition with a Diamond Viper V550 video card. When I try to install MicroSoft "Bookshelf 94" I immediately get an error message that Bookshelf 94 needs VGA or better and the installation stops with no apparent work around. The Viper V550 is presently set to 800 x 600 pixels, 32 bit color. Would "lowering" the settings to VGA values help? How to proceed with the Bookshelf 94 installation? This computer is being given to a disabled friend who has no computer experience. -- Posted via http://computerhelpforums.net Forum to USENET Gateway

 Getting Thumped trying to Thunk. I have a Legacy 16-bit application that generates Lessons for Education. The Lessons generated need to run on school computers from Windows 98 through Windows XP. These Lessons also need to exchange information with remote servers using XMLHTTP. I have 32-bit DLLs that can do the data exchange using XMLHTTP tested out OK. I need to be able to exchange integer values, strings and status between the 16-bit Lessons and the 32-bit DLLs. The Legacy 16-bit Lessons can link with 16-bit DLLs. I have tested this and it works OK. But the 16-bit Lessons are not able to link to 32-bit DLLs directly. The plan is to build…
