installation problems
by Guest Winston C.- 3 replies

Okay, so now that I've got my hardware drivers all in place (or most of them), I'm installing a couple of applications, but I've run into a bit of trouble. When trying to install "Mavis Beakon Teaches Typing Deluxe, v. 16", about a third of the way through the installation I get the message "Cannot update uninstaller log file. Current File: *.*" I had this app running on this PC before reinstalling Windows, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I tried installing an earlier version I had around (v. 12.01), but about two-thirds of the way through I got an error that simple read "Current File: *.*" In both cases, after clicking OK, the installation shut d…

Application program only runs in Win98 "Safe Mode"
by Guest PSRumbagh- 5 replies

I am trying to run the drawing program AutoSketch V2.1 in Win98 SE "Normal Mode". It always returns the error message: Illegal operation - Sketch caused a general protection fault in module SKETCH.EXE at 0090:000007703. The program will shut down. Also, the mouse operates strangely until I close AutoSketch down. AutoSketch runs OK if I run it under Win98 SE "Safe Mode". What does this suggest and what can I do about it?

Installing my monitor

(first, sorry for not answering the questions addressed to me last time I asked a question like this; I didn't realize there were new responses to my question!) I've recently reinstalled Windows 98 on an old PC; I completely wiped the drive and started over. Now, I'm looking for drivers for my monitor--a Samsung Syncmaster 753df--as I can't set the resolution any higher 640 x 480 (before the reinstall, I had it at at least 1024 x 786). I've searched all over the net (especially driversguide.com) but haven't succeeded in finding anything that works. I've tried using the installation disk that came with the monitor, but when I try to run the executable on…

Internet Explorer 6 is hanging

Sounds like a DNS/name resolution issue, and potentially a HOSTS and/or LMHOSTS if using that file. There may also be an issue with your firewall and router. Check your proxy settings in IE, and your network, firewall, and router.. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com -- _________ <letterman@invalid.com> wrote in message news:eoscv3t2nsb968s4vb684706fbtunvqkt4@4ax.com... | I have Win98Se and Internet Explorer 6. | Until a few months ago I always used IE 5.5. | Because some online order forms and things like that would not | recognise IE 5.5 I decided to upgrade to ver 6. | When i first installed IE6, it seemed to work ok. | I recently ran…

Can't find program startup command
by Guest PSRumbagh- 9 replies

The program "Microsoft Chat" launches upon bootup. I can't find the shortcut or command that causes it. It is not under the MSCONFIG startup tab. Where should I be looking for it and how do I stop the program from launching upon startup? Also, in Win XP you can put a shortcut in "C:\documents&settings\usersname\start menu\programs\startup" to have a program launch upon bootup. What is the equivalent action in Win98SE?

Any idea why my Win98SE screen saver password every few weeks reverts to the old password? The new one fails after it worked fine for days. The screen saver is native to the OS. The network password remains what it should be. I change the screensaver password and everything's okay until some weeks later. No one else uses the machine and it's not on the Internet. I use profiles as if for multiple users (I forgot what apparently worked better that way), but mine's been the only login all this time. I'm not going to a previous state with registry and startup files, and if Win is doing that without telling me it's not telling me, but whether the reversion only happen…

Desktop Icons puzzle
by Guest Jim- 21 replies

I have been having problem with Desktop icons when using the arrange icons menu selection. The icons become misaligned on left side of the screen even though the name, type, size and date are in order the icons themselves are in disarray. There are two users with personalized desktop settings. If I set the display properties dialogue on the effects tab with large icons checked, this will straighten out the misaligned icons. If I switch back to small icons the correction will continue to this setting up to the point that I use the arrange icon or line up icon on the application menu. This becomes tiresome when working. Any idea as to what is wrong with this fe…

Booting Errors List Needed
by Guest mikeeroy@invalid.com- 6 replies

I just spent half the day trying to get this computer to boot up. It worked fine yesterday. Today I started it, it booted to DOS (I always boot to dos because of my dos phone-address book, they type WIN to use Windows if I want Windows). I'm running Win98se. Anyhow, I booted to Dos without problem. Everytime I'd type WIN, Windows started to boot, then said "Windows Protection Error - VKD, Please Restart Computer" Over and over I did this. I unplugged it for awhile thinking it needed a reset. I changed the CMOS to the Default settings, I booted from a floppy, no matter what I did, everytime I tried to start Windows, I got this error. By this time I tho…

Registering Windows 98
by Guest Winston C.- 4 replies

For years I've had a Windows 98 PC that's never really been connected to the internet (well, some dial uponce upon a time); I've just recently wiped it, reinstalled Windows and bought a NIC (it didn't have etherney), and hooked the PC up to my network. I'm trying to find some drivers for a few devices and wanted Windows to search online for them. But before I can do that, I need to register Windows 98. When I try to do that, I'm told that "The microsoft registration site is busy; please try registering again." I'm done this a couple of times with no success; is that site still around? Is there another way to register, or a workaround? I'd appreciate any ad…
