Re: Windows 98SE Error message

Re: Windows 98SE Error message glee, did you ever consider getting work with MS...writing clear instructions to simple problems. I'm resurrecting an old Compaq Presario 2286 desktop as a glorified typewriter, and lost 'MSODISUP.VXD' in the shuffle as I didn't realize what the previous owner had there. In short after a month of Microsoft la-de-dah stonewalling, Novell disconnectedness, vague written directions from both companies, offers of reinstalls on the VXD only from pricy and questionable on-line sellers, and downloading a lot more of Netware than I ever wanted hoping to pluck up this precious little gem, and endless time wasted to no avail surfing…

Whenever I type an invalid web address IE goes to http://search.live.com. I never selected this. Apparently IE has some default to go there, which I want to disable. How do I disable this? I just want a blank page that says "error" like I get in other browsers.

INT 13 Unit?
by Guest none- 4 replies

Been using USB external HDD's for backup and it works great in 98SE. Have a question though on the properties for the disk once it is installed. After setting the disk as removable and assigning drive letters, unchecking disconnect and sync data transfers (SCSI options I believe), I always wondered what to do with the int 13 unit? Always comes up checked. Does it stay checked? What does it do? Would there be better or more reliable transfers with it checked or not? Did a google search on it but didn't find anything explanatory about this particular disk option. Would appreciate help on this! TIA Vic

Dos Batch File
by Guest Edward- 17 replies

Well.. It's a very advanced question.. It will exercise your minds, and solve my problem.. I thank very much who can help me.. (and forgive me for my poor english) That's the question: I NEED TO KNOW INSIDE A DOS PROGRAM, IF IT WAS CALLED BY AUTOEXEC.BAT OR NOT. In another words: If autoexec is in execution or is finished. I tried this way: Inside the program I tried to modify or delete autoexec.bat. So, if I could, autoexec is close and if I couldn't, it's open and then I'd have my answer... It didn't work, because even when it's running you can delete it, and at the time to run the next command inside it, a message like "batch file is missing…

Win 98 protected mode startup trouble

I am working on a Compaq presario 7000 with amd 800MHZ 128mb ram machine that has developed a strange start up problem. It won't start up in protected (normal) mode). i cleared some junk off the machine with no change by adaware and AV scans. sometimes, it would start with a IOS error and halt. most of the time, it just bounces you back to safe mode which it will start in and run now. i tried disabling devices in the hardware profile, but no change. now, it i do a step by step start up by using the F8 start up before it boots, i can get it to start normally. but if i reboot and don't do the same step by step, it kicks me back to safe mode. boot log in s…

Hard drive needs later OS?
by Guest mm- 12 replies

Hi, I have win98SE and went shopping for a new hard drive a couple days ago. Some said on the box that they needed Win2000 SP3 and some said they needed winxp. A friend says this isn't quite true. They only need these so that I can see the whole disk. Is this true? I think it might be because right now I think I have a 75Gig disk in my computer and using FAT 32, I think I can only see 48.8gig of it. But that's fine if I can only see 48.8 of some hard disk. I don't store videos or many picture files, and when I finally get XP or something, I can put the same HD in that system, see everythign I've got now, and have room for more. Is there a good re…

Scheduled Task
by Guest Mark1- 1 reply

I have Windows 2000 professional distributed through my company, but I could not find the proper place to post questions for that version. I think this is probably a general Windows issue anyway, so.... I have a scheduled task set up to run the following every weekday morning at 9am: NET SEND MYPCNAME "Don't forget to run the Daily Report" It works great as long as I don't ever turn my PC off. If I turn it off, say for the weekend, the task will not run on Monday (even if the computer is back on before 9am) and the task status says "Could not start". I know that you may be asking, "Why not just do an Outlook reminder?", but my company uses Groupwis…

Priority of use of multiple Ethernet Network Adapters?
by Guest ... et al.- 2 replies

How to instruct Win98xE to (if present) preferably use an external wireless USB-based Ethernet Network Adapter rather then an internal wired PCI-based Ethernet Network Adapter? It seems to be trying invainly to use the PCI-adapter even if there is no Ethernet-cable plugged in there. The computer uses the USB-adapter just fine after the PCI-adapter was physically removed. I found msKB # 894564: <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894564/>, that shows how to change the binding order and how to set 'InterfaceMetric' on some WinNT versions, but i can't locate how this should be done under Win98SE. -- Nah-ah. I'm staying out of this. ... Now, here'…

I have windows 98se. Dell XPST450 came with Adobe Photo Delux Business Edition. I bought Adobe Photo Delux Home Edition. Everything has been fine. Today I downloaded a free, recommended by c-net picture editor that didn't work well for me so I uninstalled it. Then when I opened a picture I got a message "cannot find the file C:\...............jpg (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." but the picture would come up anyway. So I uninstalled Photo deluxe Home Edition and Photo deluxe Business Edition and re-installed Home Edition with the CD. I am still getting the same error message…
