PCI graphics card for Win98?
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 10 replies

Is it wise to install a PCI graphics card? The on-board graphics adaptor is working fine. The highest setting is true color - 24 bit. I don't know if 32 bit is better to have. So, I've considered getting a graphics card that will make true color 32 bit mode. But I think I heard somewhere that a graphics card will slow down (or bottle neck) the system. Is this true? And how about a graphics card that allows you to plug your television into it....does something like this exist? Is it worthwhile?

RE: How to change IDE-0 to Ide-1 in windows 98 I reformatted my hard drive in windows 98. However, now I can't boot with my floppy boot disk. I get a messages searching for boot record from IDE-0..OK and invalid sys disk, replace the disk and hit any key. How can I change my IDE-0 to IDE-1 so it will accept my boot disk in drive A. I am unable to type anything, when I hit any key the above message appears and that is as far as I can go. -- Help! Bob M "tim" wrote: > I will repost with more details . My w98se cannot boot up. I wanted to let the newsgroup know that I successfully installed the Windows 2000 printer driver for my HP printer in Windows 98 Second Edition and it works fine. I would suggest anyone to try and see if they can get a Windows 2000 basic driver to work for their Windows 98 Second Edition if they are unable to get a hold of the Windows 98 Second Edition driver.

Install 2nd HD or External HD
by Guest Angel- 15 replies

Hi everyone, I was thinking of installing a second hard drive or getting an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up files. I have 2, 1.1 USB ports. One is occupied by my APC battery backup and the other, I am using a Belkin 4 plug in hub. What is the best way to go? Do I need drives for these options? What do I need for this purpose. I am running Windows 98SE on this machine. TIA Angel

Dual Booting Win98 and XP is is possible?
by Guest justme_jim@nospam.com- 2 replies

Is it possible to boot to both Win98 and XP? I also want Dos. I assume my win98 would be the dos boot, since right now I boot to dos and have to type WIN to start windows. What I want is this same setup for 98 and dos, OR boot to XP. How can I do this? Do I put both OSs on C:, or should I put one of them on D: (another partition)?

Netscape 7.2 in Win98SE
by Guest Robert Baer- 8 replies

About 10 years ago, it loaded fine and i was able to configure the various toolbars, etc to my liking. Maybe because i have already installed Firefox, i have been having problems with getting NS7.2 to work. Install, and the top looks "reasonable", but "items" on the top bar like "edit / view / bookmarks" etc do not work, and there is only one toolbar below that (fine with me), but the buttons do not work. URL address bar is always blank, and no (valid) URL displays *ever*. Uninstall, re-install; everything is in a different place on the HD, but it looks and acts the same. Tried some editing of panacea.dat, changing logic from hidden="true…

Application Interface Icons Appear Corrupt 1 2
by Guest arnymars- 34 replies
- 1.8k views
Hello, On my Win98SE PC some Applications at startup show inclear Icons in their Toolbars and all around user interface. Icons pictures are not rendered properly (unclear), while picture files open by the same applications are shown properly. It happens time to time with many applications in random order, and icons that were not shown properly one time, the next startup of the same application may be clear. More, part of the icons on the same application toolbar may be clear, but the rest is not. I read, system icon issues may be related to insufficient system Icon Cash File size. But my problem is with application icons, not system. NOD32 shows no viru…

Can anyone solve the following problems? 1) In the Bookmarks, the first (useless) entry is "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" - how can i get rid of that *permenantly*? 2) The bookmarks background is grey, making entries hard to read - how can this be changed? 3) Click on add URL to bookmarks, and a stupid, redundant, time-wasting POPUP prompts to "add in bookmarks" - how to eliminate? 4) Default URL not shown in address bar when launched.

When I type an e-mail message or text in a webpage text area, or even a text document in Notepad or another Text Editor, the cursor jumps time to time to different places around the text, so I need to return it to the text end every time. May it be Laptop Trackpad related or Win settings? What to do to prevent cursor jumping?

Video adaptor driver
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 2 replies

Just the other day, I got a "new" computer from work. It's a Compaq Deskpro EN. The case is of the small type...I believe it's called small form factor? Anyway, I took the HDD and CD burner out of my old IBM PL300 and installed them in the newer computer case. It took a while to get the Compaq to load from the new hard drive. I didn't want to fdisk the HDD because I have so much stuff on there I cannot lose! So, I used Compaq's disk "test" function and that seemed to help. Anyhow, as could e expected I need to find drivers for the new graphics adaptor in the Compaq. It took me a while, because I didn't know what adaptor was in the machine (I di…

Is this a drivers or Win 98 updates problem? Thanks.
by Guest kplumm- 2 replies

I re-installed Windows 98 on a Packard Bell machine recently but it's not running as modern-looking as it was. I'm a bit naive about this subject - the fresh install has got rid of other problems, e.g. windows Protection Errors, but do I now need to find drivers (and if so, for what - monitor, grapohics card?) or updates? Are Windows 98 updates archived anywhere? The picture is very low res looking. Can someone point me in the right direction to get this otherwise good machine going well. Thanks for all efforts.

I have an old system, a VIA P4PB400-FL motherboard, and have the CD that came with it. But that CD only has audio drivers, no USB drivers. I do not know how that problem was initially solved ages ago. I am trying to re-install from scratch (new, larger HD), and all works except in the device manager, i get a ? with USB controller device associated with this wonderful icon. Trying properties, install driver, i get text it is looking for USBECHI.SYS from disk "Windows9X USB 2.0(ECHI) Driver Disk for VIA". The Win98 CD, the VIA CD, and other 3rd party CDs all fail to satisfy this. Help???

User Name in Dialer (Dial-Up connection)
by Guest Brad- 2 replies

Hi, I know how to change the phone number in the Dialer (dial-up internet) via properties, but the only way I know how to change the User name in the Dialer and have it "stick" (saved) is to actually connect to the internet. Do you know of a way without me connecting? Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your password, credit card number, etc., be sure there is no active keystroke logger (spyware) in your PC.

Need DRIVER DETECTIVE
by Guest justme_jim@nospam.com- 1 reply

Years ago I downloaded and installed a shareware called "Driver Detective". Back then it was from a company called Monkeysoft. I'm not quite sure how I got a registered version after all these years. The version I have is 2.0.13. I just decided to upgrade the program and was prepared to pay the cost because I have been having some driver problems that need to be fixed. I ended up going to http://www.drivershq.com. I assume this company either took over, or changed their name. (I dont see any history on their site). I was ready to download the trial when I noticed it said will not work with Win98, or anything below Win2K. They do not have any of their olde…

Unknown Devices in control panel
by Guest larry@invalid.com- 2 replies

This is 98se. I keep getting Unknown Devices in control panel / system. I removed them, and keep getting asked to set up drivers everytime I boot up, and have to repeatedly hit CANCEL everytime I boot up. I just reinstalled windows on top of what was there, so I would not lose my settings and programs. Now they are back with the yellow error markers. How the heck am I supposed to know what they are when they just say "Unknown Device"? This is most irritating. Thanks Larry

I'll be giving a couple of mp3 players as gifts for Christmas, but I want to upgrade the firmware first, since the kids are not really into that sort of thing. I'll be doing it from a Windows computer - does it matter that they run Macs? Note that after they get these they may elect to download the "MediaSource" program from Creative (supported by both OS's), which interacts with the player.
