how to boot in verbose mode - please help
by Guest Adam- 4 replies

I am still trying to find the cause of the following problem ... > Booting into Safe Mode really magnifies the shower of bad pixels problem. > Doesn't this eliminate the ATI AGP video card as the cause of the problem? I recall that there is a way to boot the system in verbose mode but can't remember exactly how. Anyone know? Large Word files and 98SE
by Guest Graham C- 14 replies

Word and Win98SE problems I am currently working with a number of large .DOC files, typically 400 pages, lots of photos and diagrams etc. They are between 5 and 60 Meg in size (I know I'm a glutton for punishment, but I didn't create these files) There are two interesting problems: 1) One 50 Meg file always opens in around 10 secs when it is double clicked. Another file of a similar size takes around three minutes to open. In each case the PC was clean booted from cold. 2) I can copy small files from drive to drive with no problem. With an 8 Meg DOC file it takes a little longer - typically 20 seconds. But with a DOC file greater than about 10 Meg: …

destorying the hard drive 1 2 3 4

My daughter has an old Gateway computer running Windows 98. She says no one wants it because it is slow and obsolete and she wants to turn it into the local recycling place. She is worried about (personal) data on the hard drive. I wonder if reformatting the HD will destroy all the data? My old W95 computer, I took the HD out and smashed it with a sledge hammer, but she doesn't want to do that. She took it to a computer store, and they offered to "hose" the HD and dispose of the computer for $50.00. Any suggestions? Jim

BIG Problem
by Guest שמואל- 12 replies

I installed the Unofficial Windows 98 patches. Now the computer does not go into Windows, not normal nor Safe Mode. I get a fatal exception error at 0187 (or (0167):BFF9E0BF. I can also sometimes see an error in VXD VWIN32(05). Can someone help me get the computer to work again? I couldn't reinstall Windows 98 from a CD either. Setup thinks (wrongly) that disk commpression is used. Thank you.

BIOS upgrades - reflashing the BIOS
by Guest Bill in Co.- 21 replies

Just spent an "interesting" (to put it mildly!) weekend on this project to enable a microprocessor upgrade. I wouldn't recommend it for the faint-hearted, suffice it to say, or you might end up with a paperweight. :-) You know, it wouldn't be quite so bad, except that in some cases, there is no reverse path available (i..e, it's a one way trip) - which seems unforgiveable, on their part! My question is: why do these BIOS manufacturers sometimes make it so damn difficult to upgrade/downgrade or go back to a previous version (especially when going from one manufacturer to one its subsidiaries, or vice versa (like Dell and Intel)? And not only that, but …

Disk Recovery (RE: Computer Failure ) 1 2
by Guest BAP- 37 replies

The start of this new Post regarding the ‘Computer Failure’ Post was suggested by “MEB”, and rightly so, as the that earlier Post was creating some confusion. As was discussed in the ‘Computer Failure’ Post, the Microtime Computer, that I have been using for several years, has failed and I find it rather difficult to get it operational, again. There is a Primary Master and a Secondary Master HD’s installed in it. There are folders in both that have Data that I would like to recover. A more recent Computer, a Sony VAIO, that I am currently using, appears to have all that I would need to connect those HD’s and recover the desired Data and back up the…

I was trying to create an "Iso" file greater than 4 GB and received an error message that FAT32 does not support files greater than 4GB. Is this Windows 98 limitation, and if so is there a fix ? -- Warren No spam address used. Please reply to group only.

WANTED: MicroMind Slipknot (OLD) Download
by Guest robertmosley@invalid.com- 1 reply

Does anyone remember MicroMind Slipknot? It was the first public web browser for Dos, Win3.x. Unix, and OS2. and came out in 1994. Their archive website still exists here: http://www.micromind.com/slipknot.htm Unfortunately they dont offer the download anymore and in 1997 they abandoned the software. I was one of the first people in my area to go on the www when it was developed. Slipknot was far from Netscape which replaced it, but Slipknot had the unique ability to be run from multiple platforms. I could have sworn I had the install file on a floppy but if I do, I cant find it. I want to try to run it again, and see how it runs on Win98se. I googl…
