MSGSRV32 is Not Responding
by Guest equestrian42@invalid.com- 3 replies

The last week or so my computer seems to just suddenly stop for awhile. Sometimes as long as a minute or so. When I do CTRL ALT DEL I get an error message saying MSGSRV32 is not Responding. If I close it, everything works fine, except when I shutdown the computer locks up so I have to just shut it off. Anyone have any ideas what's going on? I'm running Win98SE on a 1ghz P3. 380 (something) Ram No detected viruses or spyware. Harddrive is not fragmented and checks ok with scandisk. Everything else works fine.

Are mouse/keyboard on COM1? (vjp2)
by Guest Vasos Panagiotopoulos- 5 replies

On a 1995 GW2K p5-75, I had the modem on COM4 for ten years, I never really used the other comm ports. I somehow had the impression the ps/ 2 were COM1. (Doesn't make total sence, I know) I think I only could find the COM2 connection, that's why I thought this. Ok, why now? Because I realised the reason W98 (dual boot with win3.11/ DOS6.22) never saw the SCM Smart Card I was able to use from DOS was becaus eof IRQ. I played with IRQ and I lost the com4 modem. Restart to pure DOS and the modem is fine. But I've also never been able to connect a Palm pilot to COM2, nor a camera. No, wait, I did once connect another (horrible) camera to Win98 but I hadn't told Wi…

Starts booting then h/w switches off
by Guest John- 1 reply

I have an HP desktop system for many years and ISTR it has a Pentium 400 processor with a 40GB HDD and I run Win98 on it. The configuration I've got has run for years. But recently something seems to have happened. Now I find that when I boot, the BIOS startup seems ok and then my bootmanager starts. I use "BootIt" and it lives in a tiny partition at the end of the hard drive. But after about a minute (during which I see only a blank screen) the system switches itself off. Can I refresh the system files on the hard drive by using the Win98SE cd? It's been so long since I'v had to deal with this that I would welcome any useful tips or things to…

Installers
by Guest 33223- 1 reply

Installers Each device within the wireless network (computer, printers, auxiliaries) must be installed with a Network Interface Card, or NIC. The NIC transmits wireless signals from the access device and enables each device in the network to send and receive signals. Installers must also decide which of three industry standards by which to designate to the network. These industry standards are 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g -- these names differing only in the last letter. The "a" standard is the least common and incompatible with "b" and "g." The b standard is most common. The g standard enables more robust digital downloading, and can support with b. The b …

lately everytime I try to turn on my computer (the first time) it goes to safe mode and tells me to go to control and make sure everything is right. I make some changes Dell XPST450, win 98se, last downloaded item = latest Adobe Reader (since I was having a lot of trouble printing postage from usps.com. I disconnected all my USB plugs and then was able to connect normally. I had a Hub connected (I had unplugged everything from the hub) and a HP Photosmart picture printer.

Can't Get Rid Of System Config Utility Entry
by Guest DaffyD®- 5 replies

I deleted Adobe Photoshop and the disabled Adobe Gamma Loader.exe still shows in the startup window in the SCU. I checked and it's not in the Common Programs file on the C drive (as shown in Startup), nor is this file in HKLM in the registry. Where in the registry to you go to remove these "phantoms? Do I have to reinstall the original program and then delete it again? How do you delete disabled items that are not shown in the registry? -- { : [|]=( DaffyD® If I knew where I was I'd be there now.

Can't View New Posts Using OE6
by Guest DaffyD(R)- 5 replies

I've also been able to view all new newsgroup messages using the Outlook Express newsreader. Now, starting this month, I'm not able to see any posts after 11/2. The reason I sent 3 posts regarding one issue is that my posts didn't show up in the OE6 newsreader. I've tried refreshing it but it didn't help. Has the OE news reader been discontinued? Is this the right group to post this issue or does it belong in the OE newsgroup?

* THE 12 STEPS OF MICROSOFT WINDOWS *

* THE 12 STEPS OF MICROSOFT WINDOWS * 1. We admitted we were powerless over Microsoft and that our lives had become unmanageable from using Windows. 2. Came to believe that a powerful operating system greater than Windows could restore us to sanity. 3. Made a decision to turn our computers and our operating system over to the care of Linux, OS/2, or Macintosh as we understood which works best. 4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of our hard drives, and deleted all Microsoft files. 5. Admitted to Microsoft Customer Service, to ourselves and to other computer users the exact nature of Windows faults. 6. Were entirely ready to have the For…

Starting applications automatically in safe mode
by Guest Frank- 11 replies

I need to start a logger application under Windows98 when the system is started in safe mode. I know that I have to use the registry key HKLOCALMACHINE\System \CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot but I don't know what to add. Perhaps a new Key under Minimal and Network keys with the name of the application? And so, where is the information about which program to launch? I need to launch a program .EXE in a specific folder. I tried with win.ini on [bOOT] section, keys run= and load= without any result. I tried also to prefix with a * the key that starts the application when OS is started in normal mode under HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentV…

Windows 98 Time Zone Update
by Guest Patrick- 4 replies

Time Zone update for Windows 98 Operating System The USA and Canada and other countries have decided for energy savings, greenhouse gas reduction or other reasons to change the starting and ending dates for Daylight Savings time. This requires an update to the time settings for all versions of Microsoft Windows. For Windows NT, 2000, or XT microsoft provides Windows Updates for the necessary changes. However since Microsoft is trying to migrate users to Windows Vista and XP they did not provide an easy update for Windows 98 so I made one from the information they provided for Windows XT, modified it for the proper Windows 98 registry settings and tested i…

We have one remaining Windows 98 se CD in the organization that I can find and it is not readable any longer. I need to re-install Win98 SE on one of our older P2 machines that can't be upgraded to run anything else. Win98 will work fine for use with terminal services. I have the product key from this original Win98 SE CD. Does anyone know where I can download and burn another Win98 CE CD for free? Thanks, Brad

Moving On (Sort Of...)
by Guest Nigel Stapley- 5 replies

Well, I finally bit the bullet. After nearly 6.5 years, I've bought a new PC. Not having gone *completely* potty, I declined Vista and went with XP Pro. It's a nice rig. I still have my old 98SE machine, though, and intend getting a year or two more out of it yet. I'm going to keep it for certain functions and - in due course - to set it up as a dual-boot machine with (probably) Xubuntu, 'cos I want to get my head around Linux OSes. So although you won't be seeing as much of me from now on (and I may have to start hanging out in The Group With The People Who Forgot To Wear Their Tinfoil Beanies), I'll still be reading regularly and asking obvious…

Reformat, Reinstall, and updates
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 1 reply

Last night, I reformatted the HD and installed everything all over...AGAIN! It's actually quite a peaceful past time lately! I was just wondering something. After I installed the Yahoo messenger for my wife, it automatically installed the latest flash player for IE6, which is Adobe Flash Player 9. I haven't yet patched the computer with the Microsoft updates. I know from past experiences, that if I apply the critical service packs AFTER I've installed Adobe Flash Player, I lose that flash player to Macromedia's flash player 5. My question is, do I really need the Microsoft critical updates for Windows 98, WMP9, DirectX9, and IE6? I'm behind a ro…
