I have been trying to run Audacity 1.2.1, (an older version which seems more stable on Win98SE) but which seems to be corrupting the driver for my AC97 sound card, which I have to continually reinstall. I am not much of a techie so is there another similar free audio recording program or programs I can try. Thanks.

WORD PAD HELP!
by Guest Brusso- 2 replies
Whenever I open up Word Pad I have it to where the ruler is showing so that it will know when to drop down to the next line when it reaches the end or I press Enter as it's set to 6 and a half inches (the little slider that you can move left or right on the bottom right side). For some reason or another when I start typing on it the little slider will automatically move itself all the way to the right or even if I cut and paste or copy and paste to the Word Pad it will do this as well. Can you please tell me how I can set it to where it won't do that and so that it will stay at the specified inch that I set it as well. The 2 sliders that you can see are th…

How can I make my responses be tightly wrapped
by Guest Dan- 2 replies

I am just puzzled and I know this is an easy question but how can I make my replies be formatted correctly and not have the text jump all over the place or is that just a limitation of posting within a web based interface compared to a specific newsgroup program like Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird.

Problems with NetScrape 7.2
by Guest Robert Baer- 2 replies
Now it was a bitch to get it to work at all, musch less as well as it is working now. The problem was that i had loaded FireFox, which diddles operation of both. And as everyone knows, "uninstall" *never* removes everything. Uninstalled both, used major surgery on the HD and the registry, and Netscape still refused to work - with some icons showing as FireFox. Uninstalled again, and ripped out Java runtime and Java web. For umpteenth time, installed Netscape but used custom to prevent installation of java stuff. Now it works, except.. 1) Cannot post a (new) message Subject "test " and body "test" (no quotes either one without getting ALE…

Win98SE & DSL...
by Guest Cagey Bee- 2 replies

Can anybody give me step-by-step instructions on connecting a Win98SE PC to the AT&T/Yahoo DSL service? Or point me to a web site where I can find the information? Should I just try using the Home Networking Wizard? Their tech support adamantly refuses to help with this issue. I already have a network card installed, so you need not explain how to do that. User Name in Dialer (Dial-Up connection)
by Guest Brad- 2 replies
Hi, I know how to change the phone number in the Dialer (dial-up internet) via properties, but the only way I know how to change the User name in the Dialer and have it "stick" (saved) is to actually connect to the internet. Do you know of a way without me connecting? Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your password, credit card number, etc., be sure there is no active keystroke logger (spyware) in your PC.

HP Presario 4530 loose leads
by Guest ms- 2 replies
Power on, fan runs, hard drive light on, but black screen. Quite awhile ago, answer here on this machine was probably a bad onboard video card. Opened up the case, out of the power supply is a loose 4-wire power cable with a small connector, smaller than I see on the CD drive or the floppy drive. The cable harness has a spare data connector tucked into a bay beneath the existing CD drive. But the power supply rating is only 100 watts, so don't think it came with more than 1 floppy drive and 1 CD drive. I was hoping the loose power cable would match a jack on the MB, maybe help video issue. But don't see any 4 pin jack on the MB within reach of the …

Keeping Registry Clean and Protect From Spyware
by Guest voujnbwuotkd@yahoo.com- 2 replies
- 326 views
Registry spyware is basically spyware that hides itself away inside of your computer. Basically the registry is the heart of your computer. Your registry is system registry, it is heart of your computer where major components of your system reside. The registry keeps track of your all system files, drivers for your hardware, program installed and records their behavior and settings. Where as spyware refers to a broad category of malicious software that has been designed to intercept or take partial control of the operation of your computer. Of course, this happens without your consent. Therefore you can see just how bad registry spyware can be. You will be able …

notepad false error message
by Guest mypcbase@hotmail.com- 2 replies

I dont have a problem here, but post this here in case someone else face the same situation. Misleading information from Notepad: When i edit (file is windows\inf\applets.inf), select all, copy and paste to a new file, first time works with notepad. paste again to the same target file without quiting, this time doesn't work. The error message is this: "Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again." but when I apply it to EditPad (freeware), no problem at all. So the problem is not because of insufficient memory, but something is wrong with Notepad error message.…

IE 6 fails to start (wants to send error report)
by Guest Some Guy- 2 replies
On the system in question (win-98se, fully patched/updated - to the extent that it can be) IE was well behaved. I was away for a few days and a relative stayed at my house and was using the computer. At some point IE got screwed up. So right now when IE is launched, no IE window is created or started. Instead, some sort of error window comes up that says "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encounterd a problem and needs to close". There is a checkbox to restart IE, along with a couple of buttons (send error report, don't send report). The details of the report contains the following selected info: Error Signature: AppName: iexplore.exe modver:…

RAM
by Guest Capt K Ripendran- 2 replies

I have a HP Pavilion 6511 Desktop with the following: 1. Motherboard - P5S-VM, Supplier -ASUS 2. Base Processor and Speed - 500 MHz AMD K6-2 with 3D Now! technology 3. Chipset - SiS 530 4. Memory - 64 MB SDRAM standard, Speed 100 MHz synchronous. As it has Three 168-pin DIMM sockets and can take upto 3X128 MB, I had added two more viz., a 64 and a 128 MB RAM's into the two vacant sockets. The unit was working well until recently when it had memory problems which I had ascertained using "Windows Memory Diagnostics". I wanted to verify my diagnosis and so I gave it to a service centre. They now advise me that the sockets are damaged and replacing with new…

My Documents location
by Guest WebAsh- 2 replies

I'm currently using an old windows 98 computer. And on it the My Documents folder has been mapped to a UNC address that is no longer valid/active as the server that it addresses has been since 'decomissioned'. However, I can't change the location of where the My Documents points to because it seems that because the current location it is set to is not valid it won't let me change it. It doesn't error or anything like that, it just looks like it saves the new location upon hitting OK, but trying to access my documents or opening the properties up again, confirms that it has indeed not changed it... and left it as what it was, the unavailable network address. …
